FREE TIBET !!! This Campain has given China the KICK. Thank you Mr Bhaichung Bhutia for pulling out of the Torch.
by Cutlet Gravy on Apr 01, 2008 04:23 PM  Permalink

I am sure some will say it's somewhat heavy-handed,
and it does make them a bit uncomfortable.

Good.

We should be uncomfortable about this subject.

At least there's an up side to the campaign.

But what else can you expect from China but to
be "shamelessly self-serving" as they are
attempting to have a full house for the Olympics.

I have actually welled up with tears, I cannot handle watching them.

I do think that people in this country need to be made aware that Tibetans are not disposable,
but these Olympics are, and China's oppressive behaviour is way over the top.

India's Silence
by vignesh p on Apr 01, 2008 03:21 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

As far as Indian govt is concerned, this is a border dispute between 2 neighbour countries. It doesn't wish to intervene because it doesn't want other countries to intervene its border dispute with pakistan govt. It is that Simple.
Tibet is to China, what Kashmir is to India in world's perspective. Also, supporting Tibet now, will anger China and will endup disadvantageous to India in an event of conflit(war) with Pakistan. China will then make sure to support Pakistan which is a nightmare to our goverment. So how many of you understand this chess game? raise your hands! :)

No, I'm not a politician. And this is my personal stand on this issue - We should all watch/participate in olympics while solemnly expressing our concerns for Titebtans. But how do we express? Whenever we attend this olympic ceremony, we can all wear the black badge or something similar. That will express our concern stronger than sitting at home and boycotting the sport. I hope Bhutia changes his mind and actively support the game AND tibetan freedom, instead of passively boycotting the sportevent and sitting at home.

Human Rights bodies can slam IOC. I do not wish to mix sports with politics any day. Will you continue in the same spirit after the Olympics? You will see all falling silent after the event eventually. Anyways, China isnt a greater human rights violator than United States and the British in its colonial days.

right, china isnt the greatest human rights violator. the americans and the british are. give me an opportunity to protest.

olympics happened to be the greatest opportunity to protest against chinese brutalities. And so every one is using this opportunity.

To be very honest I%u2019m not against Olympics nor is every one here who are boycotting Olympics.

And one more thing, I don%u2019t think you read the article I requested you to read. Even if you have read it, I don%u2019t think you have understood it.

In the article I don%u2019t want you to read what the rights bodies says, I want you to understand the meaning of Olympics.

Got it. Please read again.

the point i am trying to make is: Lets not mix politics with sports. I am against human rights violations as well, where ever it is committed or whoever is the culprit. Olympics is simply not the Forum to rake up these issues. Why do we have UN then? should we shift UN sittings to Olympics venues then?
The problem with some of us Indians is that we have double standards in mind and dont see the bigger picture. What would you say if in 2010 China says it wont send its athletes to the Commonwealth games in Delhi as India is violating human rights in North East or in Kashmir and it supports the separatists there. The same logic applies. The Indian Government knows this and keep mouth shut knowing this. Still the public is always after China and Pakistan for reasons unknown to them!

kamal, its not the chinese who wanted the torch to go thru india. after the tibetan rioters entered the chinese embassy in delhi, the chinese refused to sent the torch to india sensing trouble from the rioters. if it would have happened india will be showcased as a poor security provider, to avoid the embarrassment indian govt made repeated request to make the torch pass thru india. china has accepted this by having an security undertaking form our country. if the torch is getting disrupted it is the loss of nations pride, which is what the tibetans are trying to do bcoz they dont have anything to lose from it but we have our national pride at stake and these tibetans dont mind spoiling our national pride even after they have better life in our country then most of our citizens even thou they are refugees.

Priya Nair,

I am no Chinese agent nor approve what China does to Tibetans. If I am asked to, I will stand whole day in support of Tibetans. What I am trying to convince you all is that Tibetans are asking for too much from us. Asking us to reject the Torch that is symbol of Olympics.

Neither do I persoanlly have any problems with Bhutia's refusal to carry the torche. All I say is that he being an international level sportsman put Tibetans' cause before his nation's presence at the Olympics.

Pity that I could not succeed in convincing you all.

Dear Jonas DSouza ,u cannot understand what a big threat china is to our nation..........it was a blunder committed by Nehru to accept chinese aggression into Tibet..........if Tibet be a n independent state, then it will act as a buffer between India and china...........that will be of great interest for our motherland...........bcoz dragons are always trying to engulf it since 1962...............and our spineless leaders are bowing their heads in front of them in fear...............so at least Bhutia ,being a David, shows the courage to take on Goliath............

Dear Jonas DSouza,

bhutia is actually doing india proud internationally. now the whole world knows that there are people in india who is opposed to any form of human rights violation.

his act will give an opportunity but more importantly the courage to the whole world to stand against human rights violation.

you should be appreciating bhutia's work instead.
