India is not POOR. We have enough resource to beat the crap out of any nation. BUT , we need to raise our expectations from individuals , each and everyone. Please stop using that excuse to justify the pathetic condition of the nation. As long as we have incompetent leaders and administrators , we will suffer.
Bush is a classic example. See how a great nation like USA can be dogged down by a Ahole like Bush.

If you think deeply, you will come to the conclusion that the leaders of a democratic nation mirror the people they lead to a fair degree.
In US: Ppl actually thought war was going to be cool. War will fuel the economy. Ppl even voted Bush the second time. More than Bush it is all the people's doing.
In India: In the recent UP election, for the first time a bunch of intellectuals formed a party and contested (I forget the details), and they lost their deposit. We are still enamored by fair skin and leaders who can captivate audiences. Caste is playing an increasing role as the polarization of hindu society has not yet diluted. there are still not marriages with lower castes. Unless the caste in Indian society is dluted, reservations and casteist politicans will continue to rule.
Sania Mirza is the only Indian(women) player in French open. And it is natural for any Indian to expect something positive irrespective of her status of so-called mediocre/extra terrestrial. So what is wrong in expecting from her? Bangladesh was also considered a rat in the race before the world cup?

Again , not good enough. I cannot celebrate mediocrity. Let her get into the top 10 , I will root for her. Big time. Until then , nada.
I was implying that we ( as in the 'FANS' ) should raise our standards to celebrate sports idols. These Jacko's can never match up to the world standards. So Ignore them and focus on building our nation.
Indian middle class , specifically the people working and promoting the IT industry , are the true 21's century heroes. As a sporting nation , WE SUCK. We should learn to deal with it.

Fitness man. We lack fitness. This is the base and foundation of al sports. In the west fitness is given preference first and skill next. In indian it is the other way around. So unless the mentality of the midle class indian changes on fitness we will be fat slobs who cant run around when tested. Skill can only take you so far. Fitness fitness fitness....but sadly we will never learn.

It's also the fighting spirit which we lack. We balk under pressure everytime and fall apart. It's also a lack of motivation and drive. We are content with mediocrity and never aim for anything beyond that.

Fighting spirit? Isn't that the reason why our civilization has been raped regularly for the last 2K years?
We dont have it in our genes, face it man! Try to achieve with whatever we have.
Too much talk and NO substance. Don't celebrate mediocrity. She does not deserve the attention that she gets. Trust me , we have to raise the standards. Rhetoric enough will not suffice.

You are going on comparing Ms. Sania with other Indians... that's absurd! If you try to compare her with the contemporary big names in the WTA women's ckt, you will realise how mediocre she is... forget it... there is no point in telling you... you are obsessed by things farthest from tennis skills in Sania!!!!

I dont believe India is a poor country. The poor factor is due to the uneven distribution of wealth?
RE:RE:No substance
by Jai Fernando on May 31, 2007 08:51 PM Permalink
hey kaka, the root cause for the uneven distribution is right in our own minds.Yes the wealth is unevenly distributed. If we are to blame the richest for not sharing the resources , we also have to remember that they were once a part of the poorer section. :-)

I am telling they must divert some wealth toward improvement but they could. Also yes I agree that all were poor at one time but the right set of connections, luck and right choice made them who they are right now(when it comes to taking risk you have to battle nay sayers)

Sania has achieved more than you could ever dream of or for that matter more than any indian in women's tennis has ever done. Its not like the government or private companies have been sponsoring her since she was a little kid. Whatever she achieves has been on her own merit. In a land where sports are always discouraged - and quite rightly, she has earned so much respect and money playing in the WTA. you care so much about an indian making it big, its only your disappointment showing. Why dont you take up the sport then and make the country proud?? or let you kids play a sport for india...encourage them and give them all the facilities you can. When that happens, post something negative about other people.

I keep reading in these columns that Ms. Sania Mirza has achieved everything on her own, without any support from the Govt! This statement is the farthest from the truth - please check out what all facilities she is enjoying - not only from AP State Govt and the Central Govt - but also Govts of states like Karnataka, and many others too! And let me remind our great advocates of this "Super Woman" that all those are from the tax-payers' money! So stop f*u*c*k*i*n*g licking Sania's feet!

Buddy Reza, Starting from Shiny Wilson, PT Usha et al, till the more recent prodigies like Saina Nehwal, there have been many many deserving sportswomen who didn't get even a fraction of what Ms. Sania has managed to get from the governments! Thank god, you are not in any capacity to decide what should be given to sportspersons, or else you would've recommended Ms. Sania's name to be the President of the country! you are right. It has becomf the practice that when someone gets through to the next round it is sweeping away and storming into. When it is out the wave pages are not available for writing any comments.
it will be better if no comments are invited for loss of sania or the over indulged Indian Cricketers. rather we should concetrate to the strong points of the nation. Thinking about the weak points are simply the wastage of time & energy. afterall they cannot bring any pride to our country rather if we dwell too much on sania & Cricket we will be the laughing stock to the outer world.

I feel she is a very average player much like our cricketers.

Okay Kulkarni Saab, Keep dreaming of the day you'll wake up to find the picture of Sania on the front page of the newspaper, holding aloft the US Open or the Wimbledon trophy!!!!
Though its not a subject here, Leander is the best tennis player but a less recognised tennis player for India. He is a real fighter and he had his famous wins when he played for India in Davis cup.Despite of his age, he is still ready to play for country and gives his 150%.Despite of his differences with Mahesh, he is ever ready to team up with him for country's cause.Offlate he has been doing well in Doubles, But undoubtedly Leander is the pride of India and I still remember the emotions of him when he won the Bronze medal in olympics. We salute you Leander

RE:Leander
by Jinnah on May 31, 2007 08:28 PM Permalink
I remember ppl critisizing Leander all the time for winning in junior circuits and challenging him to compete with men. Exactly the same venom was thrown at him. He too was using his own effort and money to do whatever he could on his own. But people wont leave him alone.
When his personal problems became public, people criticized him for playing for himself instead of the nation.
Unless there is an involvement of personal ego and selfish interest one cannot succeed in any field other than social services. The only restriction should be that ego and interest must not go against the nation and humanity.
