Unfortunately, the Prophet's (may God's eternal mercy be upon him) idea of secularism was not as we understand it today. Nowhere in the Holy Koran does he concede the right to practice other faiths. He has conceded it only when he could not convert his opponents by argument or by armed might. Very often one of the last surahs of the Holy Koran, which says something like'You are welcome to your faith and I will live by mine' is quoted out of context to show that the Prophet tolerated people of other faiths. If you read the entire Holy Book, you will realize that those are words of frustration and condemnation rather than tolerance. Whatever the congressees of our country might say, there is no tolerance in the Great Faith. One has to put it in the right perspective. One must remember that the practices before the advent of the Prophet were extremely arbitrary and the people lived at the pleasure of the tribal chieftains. To that arbitrriness, the Prophet surely brought a semblance of order. Therefore, he surely was a great person and a brave one to have persuaded the independent clans to follow a single code. Therefore, to say that he declared secular state is complete misinterpretation of the meaning of secularism and the Holy Koran iteself.

Saniya you r partially right... Your first statement is 100% wrong. Islam never teaches to kill other religion. The killing is justified in following circumstances: a) Deliberate Killing of an innocent human being(of any religion) b) One who creates 'fithna' (Disturbing peaceful social life)in the society (no religious considerations) c) Converted to other religions and working against the muslims and their rights For your second statement , I don't know how much it is correct. Islam is a global religion, you have taken a minute sample of it, however prophet had motivated bath and freshness on fridays, it doesn't mean to have bath on the day. I am a Hindu and not proud of the fact. I did not become a Hindu by choice, I was born with that as my religion, just as I was born a human being and a male. There is nothing to be proud of. It is my appeal to Hindus that they must read their religious texts and their translations, commentaries of scholars, to appreciate the beauty and logical soundness of this religion. Its sources are natural and pure since it is not claimed that god has revealed the wisdom. Every book says at some palce or the other that the wisdom has been handed down by sages since the tiem immemorial. But, besides that, to understand and appreciate Hinduism, which is a mix of many things, philosophy, science, theology and history, to name a few of its ingredients, is a liing religion that is undergoing constant change through discovery, rediscovery, interpretation and influences of the best in other religions and cultures. Other religions adhere to the single interpretation of their books unquestioningly, that is not possible with Hinduism. It is like a living organism and not an architectural construction. If Mr. Pradip Parekh has converted to Islam, he can be proud of having made the decision for himself. But, without being proud of the fact that I am a Hindu, I can assert that this is a religion that leaves the decisions about my life, wihtin its many limiting factors in my hand unconditionally, without threatening me of god's displeasure or hellfire.
GOOD THAT MAHATMA MODI HAS ENLIGHTENED US WITH THE FACT THAT SHIVAJEE WAS SECULAR AND TOLREANT . Egyptians are not Arabs. Egyptians are native north African, and are of Hamitic ethnicity. Hamitic peoples are in no way related to Semetic people (Arabs and Jews). That is precisely problem with Islam as idealogy.Let alone Hinduism,you can't convert back to Any religion.Punishment is harsh.But you can become true secular and Athiest.
Hinduism is not perfect,we Hindus have stood up to nonsense practices.We don't follow what Pundit says.We completely abolished untouchability and made a law against it.Hinduism is not private property of any race or creed.Its ongoing learning process.we all learn and adapt.We are slow but eventually we will be there.If Muslims reciprocate,i am sure we will have assimilation where "UNIVERSAL BROTHERHOOD " exist.
We indians have this adverse attachment to belief what ever the British wrote about,the British did the History by writing about what the Muslims did and as if the whole of Bharath what belonged and ruled by the muslims. They never highlighted that they muslims were all invaders and they were not the real son's of the soil. Great kingdoms like the Vijayanagar Empire,Pallavas, Maurya's were not given due importants and about thier social and economical contributions, Congressman Like Jawarharlal Nehru, endorsed the british works only to appease the English.
