I appreciate the stance, though much belated, taken by the Deoband ulemas, but they have to do something beyond mere lip service. For a start how about condemning those women who attacked a police station in AP which had arrested a few terrorists? THough I agree that the stand is much belated and comes at a time when Muslim Pakistan is suffering from the Frankenstein of terrorism that it itself created, it is welcome as the saying goes- beter late than never.

Deobandi Islam: The Religion of the Taliban
by Tathagata Mukherjee on Mar 11, 2008 12:38 AM  Permalink

From the Website of Global Security(.)com

globalsecurity(.)org/military/intro/islam-deobandi(.)htm

Deobandi Islam
The northern Indian Deobandi school argues that the reason Islamic societies have fallen behind the West in all spheres of endeavor is because they have been seduced by the amoral and material accoutrements of Westernization, and have deviated from the original pristine teachings of the Prophet.

Deoband is a town a hundred miles north of Delhi where a madrasa (religious school) was established there in 1867. The so-called 'Deobandi Tradition' itself is much older than the eponymous Dar-Ul-Ulum at Deoband. The Deoband madrasa brought together Muslims who were hostile to British rule and committed to a literal and austere interpretation of Islam.

For the last 200 years, Sunnis often have looked to the example of the Deoband madrassa (religious school) near Delhi, India. The Deoband school has long sought to purify Islam by discarding supposedly un-Islamic accretions to the faith and reemphasizing the models established in the Koran and the customary practices of the Prophet Mohammed. Additionally, Deobandi scholars often have opposed what they perceive as Western influences.

Just as Sikhs originated from Hinduism, but are not Hindus, and Protestants came from Roman Catholicism, but are not Catholics, similarly, the Deobandi sect originated in the Sunni community, but are not strictly Sunnis. The tack of Darul Uloom Deoband is in accordance with

Taliban's origins: Deoband, U.P., 1867
by Tathagata Mukherjee on Mar 11, 2008 12:34 AM  Permalink

This is a report from The Hindu:

hinduonnet(.)com/2000/01/01/stories/05011349(.)htm

The Taliban's ideological underpinning can be traced to the dusty country town of Deoband in central Uttar Pradesh where a seminary was set up by Muhammed Quasim Nanotavi in 1867 to counter the British educational model. The purpose was to train religious clerics in Islam, purged of its many practices that have crept in due to deviant cross-cultural influences. Its biases against the Shias came in useful for the Pakistanis to use the Taliban against Shia-dominated Iran.

Most disghusting was when people like Javed Akhtar approach Deoband for fatwa against terrorism, instead of condemning it themselves!

Most disghusting was when people like Javed Akhtar approach Deoband for fatwa against terrorism, instead of condemning it themselves!

Javed Akhtars allowed Deoband to grab more space amongst Indian Muslims by this.

Indian Muslims need idols like APJ Kalam, nationalist poet like Nazrul Islam.

Not people like Akhtar. And Deoband.

You can surely follow whomever you want: but there is an associated political, social cost involved.

Deoband was founded on ideals of Shah Wahiullah
by Tathagata Mukherjee on Mar 10, 2008 11:52 PM  Permalink

Who was Shah Wahiullah?

Its the same person who invoted Ahmed Shah Abdali to invade India when Mughal empire was crumbling to ESTABLISH MUSLIM RULE IN INDIA.

Not only Abdali destroyed large parts of northern Indian Hindus, ABDALI DESTROYED GOLDEN TEMPLE IN AMRITSAR, KILLED COWS ITS ITS PREMIES AND FILL THE HOLY TANK WITH COW BLOOD!

THIS IS THE REASON FOR RADICALIZATION OF SIKHS.

We can well imagine what Deoband stands for when its ideal was Shah Wahiullah!

by Tathagata Mukherjee on Mar 10, 2008 11:50 PM  Permalink

BUT THAT WAS NOT BECAUSE DEOBAND WAS A BELIEVER IN GANDHIAN, NEHRUVIAN IDEAL.

DEOBAND OPPOSED PARTITION BECAUSE MUSLIMS OF SOUTH ASIA WILL BE DIVIDED, THUS THEIR ISLAMIZATION AGENDA WILL FACE PROBLEM!

WHY PSUEDOS DO NOT EXPLAIN THIS SIMPLE THING?
