The old adage that Old Soldieras never die they only fade away is very much true. Not many on the present generati0on will remember the Great Soldier of the Bangladesh war. They will not appreciate what he and his fellow soldiers did for the country because what they see is only the monster of fundamentalist Bangladesh which is also a threat to our national integrity and an asylum for fundamentalist Islamic terrs.
In his death he has achieved Peace for himself which all his valour and bravery could not achieve for the nation thanks to our petty politicians.
We can only pray the Good Lord that He grant Peace and everlasting fame to this Great Warrior of India.
India is being turned slowly and steadily into nothing but a bhaiji empire :( Manekshaw blood would curdle in his veins if he realized that he played a big role in that.
Field Marshall Sam Maneksha who steered military action of Indo Pak war to a thundering success is one to whom the nation owes a lot and needs to remember for all times by people of India. One feels pleasant and develops a feeling seeing immediately his image that this is how a military supreme should look.He is a role model for all the military personnel.Govt should spare no efforts and should be prepared to spend any amount on this great hero-if necessary entire best medical care all over the world should be availed to save this great warrior.whether what Mr"Observer" told below is a concoction or had some element of truth,Maneksha is surely one with such guts and even if had he faced such a situation in real life,he would have certainly flatly set aside with his humility and discipline. There are still some people who cannot succumb to pressures or power and Sham is one of them.May God bless him with early recovery & long life.

Very true, friend, very true. Sam Manekshaw willl never retire; he will live on......
Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw is a great son of our soil known for his heroic activities. He was chief of our Indian Armed forces who lead our country’s victory in the Indo-Pak war in 1971 against Pakistan. He had done commendable job for the welfare of war-widows and brought drastic changes to bring out all round development in our Armed forces. He is a very self respected person & caring towards others. He is a great disciplinarian & very punctual to his routine. Let us pray to the Almighty God for his speedy recover and grant him long & blissful life!
FM Maneck Shaw has proved himself a loyal and dutiful son of INDIA and deserved the highest rank in Indian Armed Forces. We should be grateful to him for his leadership in Indo Pak war of 1971.

Dear Folks, I will unfold one more dimension of his guts and courage. This is an incident off battle field. Though this could be never confirmed but this news was in great circulation that in 1977 when Indira Gandhi lost the general election and Janta Party secured landslide victory, before handing over she called the Field Marshal Sam Maneckshaw midnight and offered that let the Indian Army take over the country and the Defence Forces will let rule Mrs. Gandhi as PM by declaration of the election results as null and void. Mrs. Gandhi thought that the Field Marshal was conferred to him by none other than herself, Sam will follow her. Showing the supreme courage, Sam got up, salute her and said that the Indian Army will never come out of its barracs to interfere in the democratic process as its role and responsibility is well defined. Thus, Sam Maneckshaw averted the country to be thrown to Military Junta. That is courage ! Wish him an early recovery and long life.

Observer, this is a cock and bull story that cannot stand scrutiny:- 1. The Field Marshal post is purely ceremonial and it would have been stupid for Indira Gandhi to try and achieve this goal through some one like Sam Manekshaw. She could have tried using the services of the Chief of Army Staff. 2. Indira Gandhi would have known that the Indian army would never have even dreamt of taking political powers. It did not even do so during the 60's when military dictatorships rule around India. Though Nehru suspected that General Thimmiyya would be tempted to follow on the lines of Gen Ayub Khan and try some misadventure. But that did not happen - Finally while Indira Gandhi was not averse to bending rules to stay in power it is unlikely that she would have asked for military coup to keep herself in power- she was too much of democrat to do that.

What Mr. Observer is saying is 100 percent correct. I am from defence background and let me tell u, every senior defence officer knows this story. To add to what observer has commented, Field Marshal Manikshah was the first and last field marshal of India. It was the only post in Indian Constitution, which was more powerful than prime minister but less to president. If Field marshal wishes, he can order indian forces to take over pariliament and government. these rights were given to him by president of india. After the above quoted incident, field marshal post was removed because Indira realised that this guy has guts and official power to deny her orders. After that, even the post of field marshal was removed from indian Army. and subsequently maniskshaw got his retirement. because know one will demote from his post.

Story or not, the general outcome of it is 100% true - I mean the fact that FIELD MARSHAL SAM MANEKSHAW was a courageous & lion - hearted Son of India who Detested & Defied the Interference of Political Obstinacy in Army Affairs.
Then you must have been away from India, in 1983, when the same honorary rank of Field Marshal was was conferred on the only other Field Marshal of the Indian Army -- Kodandera Madappa Cariappa.
