ROME: Italian police on Wednesday arrested 33 Sri Lankan Tamils charged with belonging to the outlawed Tamil tigers group fighting a separatist insurgency against the government in Colombo, an official said.
Twenty-eight people were arrested in a series of raids on the mainland, suspected of membership of the liberation tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and of providing funding for the group, an official with the police counter-terrorism cell in Naples who coordinated the raids, told AFP.
Five other Tamils were detained by authorities in Palermo, Sicily, also on suspicion of belonging to LTTE, in a separate police operation, the official, Antonio Sbordone, said.
Some 200 police were involved in the operation which saw raids across the country from Naples in the South to bologna in the North, and also on the island of Sicily.
The LTTE is proscribed as a terrorist organisation by the European Union. The tigers have been fighting for a separate homeland for the Tamil minority in Sri Lanka since 1972.

It's a good move by the TTD and should set an example for others, though they are not the first to do so. In fact, there is an Iyengar scholar in Karnataka who has been helping everyone irrespective of cast to take up conducting prayers for quite a while now.
The great Acharyas of the past recognised the good in all casts; that's why there are more non-brahmin alwars in the Sri Vaishnavite tradition. The "Proud Brahmin" seems to forget instances where dalits, etc were honoured by these Acharyas.
The "Kanakana Kindi" episode in Udupi clearly shows that the diety there did not distinguish between Brahmins and others among his bhakta's or devotees.

A gery good Move indeed ! Dalits are a fraction of Hindus. They were driven away by the higher cast communites; which led the Dalits to take shelter in other religions by converting. Now it is the higher casts who must embrace them and give them a feeling of equal existance.

dalits are 21% population in india.missionaries after converting 60% of dalits leave them in lurch with discrimination worst than they were facing in hinduism.recent fight between caste christians and dalits christians in tamilnadu prompted christians dalits to revert back to hinduism,their parents religion which they were following from their forefathers.seperate dalit churches were erected for which missionaries kept quite.now conversion is slowly getting arrested due to dalits feel hinduism is better than being in allien religion from desert region
