Andhra Govt cancels Ahmadiya meet
Omer Farooq | Hyderabad
The controversial conference of Ahmadiya community could not be held on Sunday as the State Government cancelled the permission for the meeting at the Lalitha Kala Thornam, an open-air theatre, on technical grounds. The cultural department, which runs the open-air theatre at Public Gardens, issued a notice late last night cancelling the permission earlier granted saying there was a major breakdown in the electricity supply line in Public Garden and all the programmes scheduled to be held in different auditoriums on Sunday were cancelled.
According to a spokesperson of the Jamat Ahmadiya, the police handed them the notice of cancellation of the permission at 1 am when they were busy making arrangements at the premises. "We were asked by the police to vacate the place and as law abiding citizens we agreed," he said. Soon after the armed police personnel of Rapid Action Force cordoned off the entire Public Garden.

Though the Government cited technical reasons, the cancellation of permission is being seen in the backdrop of the threat of several Muslim organisations to siege the place if Ahmadiya community was allowed to hold its meeting at a public place. The last minute cancellation came after the AP High Court had granted the permission for the organisers to conduct their meeting and directed the Government to provide security.
The news of cancellation came even as thousands of Muslims were attending a protest meeting and hearing the speakers condemning the Ahmadiya community for its "un-Islamic religious beliefs".
The meeting organised by several Muslim outfits demanded the Indian Government to declare Ahmadiya community or Qadianis as "non-Muslims" and delete them from the list of the Muslim minority sects in the country. A resolution to this effect was passed at a mammoth meeting in Hyderabad last night, organised to protest against the celebrations by Ahmadiay Jamat the 100th anniversary of its "Khilafat".

Moving the resolution, Asaduddin Owaisi, the Member of Parliament from Hyderabad said that the unanimous opinion of all sects of Muslims was that Ahmadias were not Muslims and hence they should not benefit from any scheme or programme of the Government which is meant for the Muslim minority, including the four per cent reservations in Andhra Pradesh.
