Terrorists must be laughing
by deepak on Jun 12, 2008 10:32 PM  Permalink

Islamist jihadis know how India is unable to act on terror due to inherent weaknesses of the Hindu people. The Nuke deal with US could have provided a little scare, but it is not to be.

Democracy doing its job
by Prakash Kumar on Jun 12, 2008 09:57 PM  Permalink

I support the Nuclear deal and I think it helps both India and USA. Having said that I don't think India should go ahead with the deal if the people of India don't support it or opposition from political parties. I know Communists in India are against anything that America does and seem to get away with it in West Bengal. I'm glad it's just one state. It is Manmohan Singh's fault for not consulting with them and others before proceeding deep into the talks.

Sonia/MMS should show some courage and do something good that will benefit India for a long time. They are going to lose the election any way. Why hang on to power for another 10 months. Left may bring down the government but they should still do the following:

1. Finally approve 123
2. Join in a permanent military alliance with USA
3. Volunteer 75000 India troops for Iraq that will relieve half of US forces in Iraq. India can ask for 50% of exploration and development rights to iraqi oil.
4. Volunteer 200000 Indian troops to invade Iran. USA can do all the bombing and India can do the ground fighting. Ask for exclusive right to Iran's oil and gas in return.

You support this because you don't have any family member in Indian army. It doesn't matter to both of you if Indian soldier died anywhere in world as long as you sleep with your AC turned on.

Think of Indian soldier who has to fight not for nations boders but for your extra comfort.

This will bound to happen when business man will start running country.

The purpose of Indian army is to protect and expand the long term interest of India. India is an economic superpower. We also have the 2nd largest army. We are no longer a poor nation that has to defend its border only. China and Pakistan will never dare to attack India because we are a nuclear power. Nuclear powers never wage war among themselves. We have to follow the example of mighty nations of history. Rome was even in Africa to protect its economic ionterest. British navy controlled the sea routes. USA has bases and naval presence everywhere in the world. We just cannot behave like a minor player any more. It is true that many brave soldiers will sacrifice their lives. But the nation will appreciate and respect their sacrifice. their motto is we scarifice our presence for your future.

Lobbying and N deal
by Anil Bharali on Jun 12, 2008 07:44 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Lobbying in democracy doesnot exclude vested interest which may most possibly doesnot represent fair public opinion To my opinion this is the weaker side of American democracy comparison to indian democracy. We have to see fate of N deal in this prospect.

Anil Bharali, It seems you have no clue about American democracy. They are far more focused with 2 party system. Their electro process is a fine example. Democratic party didnt split in the the name of Mrs. Clinton and Obama. They have their differences, but national interest comes first. In the Nuclear issue it is very clear politics played the role not the national the interest. WHO OWN. SURELY CHINA AND PAKISTAN. SO MANY COUNTRIES SIMILAR TREATY WITH THE US. NOTHING HAPPNED. NOTHING COWARDS RULING THE NATION WITH SELFISH INTEREST.

Raj,
It seems you have no clue about the American Senate/Congress functioning.
Every bill is driven by only one cause - MONEY. Either it is IRAQ, or defense or Pharma, or insurance.
Do you think that Americans had a divine dream that India needs nuclear energy ? NO.
With the population growth, growing middle class, and growing energy need, they saw a market ( in other words - PROFIT ). So, they want to sell us the fuel. But in order to do that, they need to circumvent the NPT / NSG clauses. This deal is precisely binding to that. There is no shame, if Indian Parliament debates on this, and keeps it aside. It is the vibrancy of Indian democracy, that keeps such debates alive. Even if we fail in this debate, God willing, we will get a better deal in future.
India is not a country which has smuggled Nuclear waste / arms / fuel. It has an 'impeccable' record. And even without nuclear fuel, we are not dying. If progress suffers, let it be, but this deal should not be signed at the cost of Defence. The 'Left' and the BJP who oppose the deal are not mad. They are a part of this democracy, and without their concerns addressed, the deal cannot pass.

Please stop preaching about the goods of USA. Grass is always greener on the other side...Try to look into what our system offers.

ANY 'ism' is BOGUS IF IT IGNORES HUMAN LIVES, PEOPLES' FREEDOM AND WOMEN'S RESPECTS!
Those 'ism' upholders care two hoots for soft feelings on what INDIA LIVED LONG BACK! AND BECAME 'MAHAN'(great)!
But these imported 'isms' have killed those 'SOFT THINGS'
Now the RED 'ism' looks after China after that theory IS BANISHED FROM EUROPE!
SO WHAT IF THE N-DEAL IS CHOKED?
IT WILL BE CHINA'S GAIN!
COMMUNISTS' GAIN AND PEOPLE VOTING FOR 'CON_COM'
alliance will BLINK when China will enter this country in 2009!
Wisdom is lost!

@sadhan pande note that your brother traders has already allowed the China to enter long back and also see the Traders /Banias going to China in large amounts and booking chinese products !Ask these BJP traders -It is a perception that all traders mostly vote BJP- stop going to China and Importing Chinese products ! Forget about Marx as u r not intersted in Phillospising buy abusing as per your biases but as u think that Chinese r our enemy and I endorse you as china ese products have intruded in India due to greed of Traders /Banias! And as for phjillsphy you do not hv to tell your ISm !It can be seen by anybody by reading ur messages !But if u think that who is not supporting BJP is traitor then I disagree with you ! But atleast it is expected that your BJP will ask Traders to stop Importing from China and ask its all Chief Ministers to ban Chinese products in their states !

It is a very strange comparison. The times have changed & it is in India's interest to sign the deal for energy needs of the country.Communists with able assistance from a puppet PM has managed to sabotage the most important treaty of the decade.
