Somnath, media and a sacrificial lamb...Never
by Anitha Menon on Jul 24, 2008 05:51 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

The only media attention is only because he is the first left speaker...he is never the best speaker in the Loksabha..Its only because he acted as a rebel against the party who had taken him to this level that the congress and the media is hyping this whole issue and branding him as a sacrificial lamb...

So Youmay be a member of the CPM party or SFI from Kerala.
Somnath is one of the best speakers India ever had.Who told you that media attention is only because he is the first left speaker ? There is nothing like left Speaker and right Speaker.Speaker is India's Parliament Speaker. Not Speaker of the regional party called CPM

Somnath Chatterjee
by Sandhya Apurva Chatterjee on Jul 24, 2008 05:44 PM  Permalink

Mr. Karat you have never won any election in yr life time. Even you can not get yr wife elected in the Rajyasabha from yr home state. You had to take the help from comreds from Bengal to do it.
Do not play with Bengalee sentiments by punishing beloved Somnathda. He is too big a leader than u. Don't play with fire. And please don't talk abt patriotism. You people called Netaji as Hitlar's Dog. Don't try to de stabilise Dr. Manmohan Sing and his Govt. His policies are beyond yr reach. No doubt u will gat a fitting reply from Mamata Didi in the next election.

I was all along under the impression that once a person is elected to the office of Speaker, he ceases to be a member of his party; in fact he resigns the membership. How then can such a person be expelled?

It is a known fact that in CPM there are two groups called Kerala group and Bengal group.Karat is a Malayali and wants to get supremacy over WB party.Kerala lobby always opposed Bengal leaders like jyoti Basu. They even banned Basu's biography in Malayalam for his "historical blunder" theory.Unlike Congress leaders of Kerala who are all highly educated ones, the Kerala CPM leaders are school drop-outs and iliterates like V.S Achuthanandan (formerly a tailor) and Pinarayi Vijayan( formerly a toddy-country liquor- worker). But WB leaders are educated ones like Basu and Somnath. The fight within the party between Bengal and Kerala is reflecting in this Somnath episode.

Shame on you, CPM!
by ABC on Jul 24, 2008 05:23 PM  Permalink

This shows the blatant hypocrisy in the Left's stand, as is on any issue. They publicly said that the decision to resign or not is completely Somath Chaterjee's, then how can they claim that he defied the party by not resigning. Shame on the CPM for bringing disrepute and party politics to the Speaker's chair.

Mr Somnath Chatterjee
by SUBRATA SARKAR on Jul 24, 2008 05:23 PM  Permalink

In India what has happened a couple of days back in the Parliament on the confident motion is really shameful. I salute Mr Somnath Chatterjee for his bold decision to stay in as a Speaker. What Mr Karat has done by expelling Mr Chatterjee from the party does not make any difference to Mr Chatterjee. The way Mr Karat is handling the issues seems to be his own property and making the party to move forward to ditches. Is the entire nation is not watching ? CPM has to pay for this. It is regretted that the hon'ble members in the party accepts their mistakes all the times at a later stage but are not taking adequate measures not to make any mistakes in future. Time will speak and the entire blame will fall on to Mr Karat.

Chatterjee's expulsion was untimely - Karat will face the ire
by jamsheed abumohammed on Jul 24, 2008 05:18 PM  Permalink

The expulsion of Somnath Chatterjee from the Party was most unfortunate besides untimely. Besides he still continues to enjoy the non-party constitutional position as Speaker of the Parliament. The party should have waited till August 12 as he promised to resign on that day. The expulsion thereafter would have been a party affair and fair as per the party constitution. There would have then been no murmur on constitutional impropriety. This looked harsh prima facie to a man who spent his 40 years in service of the party. He took the stand not to step down knowing fully well the consequences of his action. He was unnerved and unperturbed over this development as he was mentgally prepared to face it. It will now be the turn of Karat and company to face the wrath and ire of his supporters. However, criticism for the CPM has poured in from some unexpected quarters as well. For instance, CPM MP from West Bengal Tarit Baran Topdar did not mince his words while denouncing the party move, "Evicting Somnathda will surely have a long term effect, it does mean a major loss to CPI-M." Like Topdar, West Bengal Sports Minister Subhas Chakraborty too expressed his displeasure over the move.Defying the party line once again, Chakraborty told the local media, "Somnathda was an asset to the party. This decision may not augur well for the CPI-M."Though no individual was above the party but some individuals like Somnath are certainly to be treated with dignity as they are assets of the party.
