""While there is an emerging consensus among Indian policymakers and the larger strategic community that the old foreign policy framework, perhaps adequate for the times when it was developed, is no longer capable of meeting the challenges of the times, there is little consensus on a strategic framework around which India should structure its external relations in the present global context as the fracas over the nuclear pact makes clear"" what does this author or rediff think? are all the readers Oxford graduates???
Pant is being misread, is being caricatured here, where use of terms like "colonial mindset" is unhelpful and anyhow not applicable to Pant. Pant is a well known academic, with a fine book just released on "Contemporary Debates in Indian Foreign and Security Policy: India Negotiates its Rise in the International System" (Palgrave 2008)- David Scott, Dr.
The author does not seem to understand the world realities.
He is content to be led by other major powers rather than lead the other countries. I dont, for once, think this fellow understands the global order.
The author does not understand that YOU DONT NEED TO BE A RICH COUNTRY IN ORDER TO BE INVITED TO THE GLOBAL HIGH TABLE.(China was a very poor nation when it took the UN security council seat, even shoes were luxury at those time in china)
The author has the same colonial mindset of many others.Looks like his global experience (teaching in London) has only reinforced that problem of his.

Indo _ US nuclear deal for Civilian purpose is indeed the best deal in view of future power need of the country and the people opposing it has only vested interest and they do not want the country to progress . Their all cries are only absurd and irrelevant . If we have to take our nation forward we have to think globally and positively . Do not we see the progress of mankind due to development of science and technology only ? This deal has faced lot of hurdles both in our country and US and necessary amendment has been done . Are 45 NSG countries are slave of US and have sold their freedom . Certainly not . If any country of the world has advanced technology and ready to share there is nothing harm in sharing for the progress of our society . our politician should refrain from criticising the deal and should think about the nation. There are many other burning issues facing the nation where they can pull the Govt but alas there they will keep mum because they have no time at all for the real problem of the people .....Dr R V P Sinha
Manmohan singh for the past four years was licking Left's foot and dancing to their every tunes. After, 1.Failing to control the prices,(Super economist with n number of degrees), 2.Dancing to the tunes of regional parties, 3. Failing to take action against corrupt ministers in his own government.(Man of great Integrity. 4. Flouting all democratic norms for the dissolution of elected state governments. (Waking Abdul kalam at midnight from his toilet to sign the dismissal of the Jharkhand government) 5.Failing to control terrorism (Which is the biggest issue)in this contry for the past four years, 6. Appeasing the muslim community (For providing more resources to them)(Great Secularist)(Man mohan Singh is the most dangerous/opportunist) suddenly Japan Mohan Singh has become brave while he was in Japan. It is to be noted that he was just a puppet in the past 4 years, but with only less than 10 months to go for next elections, he is behaving as he is the bravest of all to hide all his failures.
Since our super MMS gained bravery in Japan, he is renamed as Japan Mohan Singh. It would have been good for this country had he visited Japan some 4 years back and stayed there itself. -By Super Japan MMS fan club.
Its a pity that more than 100 crs people are having to go thro such turmoil in the hands of a few individuals , who claim to run the country. Is anyone looking at the level to which Indian are poised to reach? Do we want our country to be a Developed Country or remain as a developing country? Mr Politician, may I ask for this reply?
As a middle class Indian, I ask only one question to all... did we ever see such growth in the country? Why blame the leaders in Crude Prices hit the roof? Do they own the production facilities?
No, we never saw such days in the past, and when the better days are in the horizon, here comes a few individual claiming to be political party, to pull the rug. Are they looking for Country's growth or come in to lime light because of these happenings.
SAD, SAD
Middle Class, who is known for not casting theit votes, WAKE UP. OUR COUNTRY NEEDS ALL MIDDLES CLASS TO ACT/REACT
Will there ever be any consensus on our foreign policies. Just look at what we have:
Communists: Anti USA, anti Israel, pro China and pro all Islamic countries.
BJP: Was pro USA, but after denial of Visa to Modi by USA,their views are bound to be fudged. As for their relationship with Arab and other Islamic countries, will entirely depend on their attitude to Muslims in India. And, of course, in turn how Muslims treat BJP will also determine their attitude. All in all, it is difficult to see them having a clear cut foreign policy.
Congress: Most confused of the lot. They have to appease the minorities, ignore the majority community, appear to be pro-USA, pro-Europe, pro-China, pro-Islamic countries (but pro-Iran will be frowned upon by Europe and USA)and so on and so forth. Where does it leave Russia in the bargain. Just ask Pranab Mukherjee who got a royal snub when he last visited Russia.
All other regional parties: In the direction where the wind blows. In other words, they do not have any policy except to support or oppose the Government in power depending on their constituencies.
All in all, that the result of the nuclear deal in the Parliament will perhaps evolve a consensus among our politicians is only a chimera. They will be as confused as ever.
