Myth #11: India needs more nuclear power to assure its energy future.

Myth #11: India needs more nuclear power to assure its energy future.

Fact: Nuclear power has been virtually insignificant in India’s energy mix in the past, and will be no more important in the future. India has been generating electricity with nuclear reactors for more than 40 years. Yet, reactors supply only 2% to 3% of its electricity today. India has not built more reactors because they have not turned out to be as safe, or as clean, or – most important – as economical as originally thought. Even if India were to achieve a 50% increase in nuclear power generation (which is unlikely) such a step would only increase India’s overall electricity output by one percent at most, and would only increase India’s overall energy output by a fraction of one percent. That is not a significant increase in the energy available to India and would not decrease India’s demand for oil and gas.

Myth #14: The deal is not primarily about making money; it is about creating a new U.S. strategic relationship in south Asia.

Fact: The deal is primarily about making money. The main effect of the deal will be to pardon India – to remove it as a violator of international norms. After such a change in status, there will be no impediment to U.S. arms sales. This is where the real money is, not in nuclear reactors. U.S. exporters have mentioned selling as much as $1.4 billion worth of Boeing airliners, hundreds of F-16 or F/A-18 fighter jets.

Commies to collapse soon
by ikku on Jul 16, 2008 11:27 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

After vote of confidence, there will be collapse within commies fronts, now too CPM-CPI though their leaders join hands together but their cadres fights everywhere. Forward block going to vanish together with RSP, and when election comes.. Commies will not get more than 15 MPS.. Opportunits like DMK or(AIADMK)..TDP.. SP..etc.. will support the centre to form Govt, There is no hope for Commies in Bengal or Kerala if they are to face any election now.. fear fact is that Commie MPs will support the Govt while voting, as they knew they will have to pack back their belongings otherwise, and its their last and final chance the people given them...

Chatterjee, who will be 79 on July 25, is also arguing that such a move would cast a shadow on the speaker's office as it is supposed to be above party politics.Incidentally, another senior CPI-M leader and West Bengal Sports Minister Subhas Chakraborty had also written to Karat saying that it would not be correct to vote against the Congress-led government along with the BJP during the July 22 trust vote.
Chakraborty, who is also a CPI-M state secretariat member, said the Communists would have to answer embarrassing questions from the people for a long time if the party's MPs voted against the Congress.

HI,
have you guys seen the headline of the story? "Sonia & Co gear up for July 22 showdown".....It again proves that their is no existence of any party called Congress....The reality is only a Woman exists and others are like her pets...and these people are talking about democracy.First demonstrate the existence of democracy in your own party then talk about national democracy. And regarding left they have always back-stabbed our countries interests in every possible way they can and as per the secularism is concerned...the concept of secularism in India is that u talk against the interest of Hindus and in favour of muslims then u r secular. and what's more funny is that people even Hindus digesting their concept and screaming for a so called pseudo secular Govt...God save this nation....

Sonia Gandhi is not imposing the leadership on herself. The partymen imposes on herself. Ask your conscince whether the congress' internal support for Sonia is anything less than 95%. Then why do you speak about internal party democracy. By the bye, what is democracy.

In US the support is more or less same for both Obama and Clinton; the show down which we witnessed couple of weeks back was a ncessity in real sense. Is it required for Sonia when more than 95% of the congressmen support her. Calling congress party one lacking internal democracy is a misnomer.
I appreciate the role Sonia Gandhi plays in Indian politics. She has installed the most qualified PM of the world. She is up for eliminating poverty and developing the knowledge sector. In no govt you can see such a rare balance.

There are problems w.r.t reservation, the way they handle the administration of higher education institutions.

But the overall effect is much better than BJP or Coomunists.

who is screaming for a pseudo secular govt. We are screaming for a govt. which stands for its convictions and ironically BJP also fails to do so when they scream against a very same deal they intended to sign in a worse manner then what we are getting. This is not conviction.

Why is Left opposing this deal?
by Pappu Nuni on Jul 16, 2008 11:21 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

The Left are confirmed reactionary forces. We can attribute two main reasons for their opposition to the Nuke deal apart from the well-known fact that they are rabid US-haters.

One, they are acting in the interests of China. Respected Security expert and retired diplomat Sri B. Raman exposes the Communists

Two they are trying to communalize the deal so that they can rob the Congress of their Muslim vote-bank. This is exactly the reason they are bringing the words "Iran" and
"Minority sentiments" into the fore. They are challenging the government to choose between Iran and USA. How sick of them? Given that choice, not even Pakistan will choose Iran
- they will surely choose USA, how we be expected to leave the USA for the sake of Iran!

India is a great liberal democracy and nations like USA, Western European nations, Japan, Australia etc are our natural allies. Fundamentalist and exclusivist states can at best
be alliances of convenience, they can never weigh more than liberal democracies.

The Left's assumption that Muslims will take the Iran cue is also wrong. Today, Muslims in India will choose USA for education and employment given a choice rather than Iran or
any other Middle Eastern countries. In fact Indian Muslims are as much aware of Middle Eastern nations' exploitative employment practices as Hindus and Christians are. Left's
efforts to band Indian Muslims around Iran will surely backfire.
