Do we need nuclear plants ???
by Reporter on Jul 11, 2008 05:44 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

See the news in bbc website today. It's regarding the decommissioning of one of their nuclear plants at Sellafield.

'' Group up for £17bn Sellafield job

A consortium, including the UK's Amec, has been named as the government's preferred choice to clean up and run the Sellafield nuclear site in Cumbria.

The £1.3bn a year contract could be worth £17bn - more than the cost of the London Olympics - to Amec, Washington International and France's Areva.

A Westminster report out on Thursday claimed it could take more than 100 years to make the site safe.

It would be awarded initially for a period of five years with the potential of further extension periods to a total of 17 years. ''

It is just decommissioning. Think of the cost involved in construction and operations , fuel, potential risk of a nuclear disaster etc etc

These amounts cannot be estimated now because we dont know the price we have to pay for these services in the future because of more stringent regulations in future.

We may have to depend on international experts ( Americans !!! ) in all these activities. So there is no wonder why Americans are very much interested in helping India to meet our energy demands.

Good samaritans. Praying to God to offer them Royal suites in heaven when they leave this world & saint hood by church.

Expecting some positive & neutral criticism, and not politically biased.

Reporter,
You have pointed to a very sound challenge in the equation. The issue of decommissioning and disposal. Even though I am a supporter of the deal, I cannot disagree the immense challenge that is posed from the investment.

However, most of these are Uranium based plants. While India plans to start with Uranium plants, my understanding is once they crack the Thorium commercial viability, the plan is to use indegenius Thorium reactors. The deal will serve interim interests and also provide the startup the Thorium reactors need. We also have enough reserves of Thorium.

However, long story short, I understand that the Thorium plants rely on reporcessing and hence should have lesser wastes.

Yet disposal is a BIG BIG issue. Disposal is an issue in every nation that produces nuclear waste. Honestly, thats a good question the governement should answer.

Left is not right
by Sridhar Seetharaman on Jul 11, 2008 05:37 PM  Permalink

Left would have any way walked out under one reason beacuse they need an excuse to fight the Congress in May 2009 . This is what the DMK & PMK did to BJP in 2004 . Walk out win seats & then cling to Power & create Nuisance..

If I were LKA or ABJ I would have voted for the Nuke Deal and Targeted the Congress for the Economic Mess / Inflation etc. Sadwe have politicians & No States men.

there must be new rule
by sandeep mishra on Jul 11, 2008 05:17 PM  Permalink

that the party or allaince having maximum no in LS must be sufficient to form the government, not 50%...........otherwise the small parties always take hostage the national parties..........and the country will be governed by those parities which have 15 or 20 seats in LS.

Solution
by pankaj kumar saxena on Jul 11, 2008 05:17 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

There is one solution.
Drop this magical number (50% 1) majority system.
Election commission should declare (with proper constitutional amendment) that 'No Coalition after election".
With pre-election Coalition, what so ever party wins maximum seats, will rule. Any member going out of party will be barred from membership.
This will horse trading, at least.
Rest can be discussed.

Well said buddy. Left can never do anything. Because you make mistakes when you do some thing. And people like them criticise. THese clowns know that very well and hence they are supporting the UPA from outside. Have the cake and eat it too. The term "scarecrow" to describe them is perfect.
