Energy security
by shiva on Jul 10, 2008 06:58 AM  Permalink

Having spent billions of dollars on nuclear plants, we are denied fuel making them white elephants. We will now spend many more billions but will uranium follow oil. Then there is no advantage unless oil runs out. In terms of pollution nuclear can be a disaster if an accident takes place despite the best precautions.

Alternative energy is not considered in the above equation. Agreed it is now miniscule, but by 2050? Nothing is impossible forever. There is a big swing factor in favour of wind & solar. The technologies are getting better to tap more of these & the costs getting less by the day & soon will meet oil. There are optimists who predict oil will have to come down to $50/barrel as solar energy will take over most of electricity production. Billions are invested to bring the costs down. Sheik Yemani insisted on keeping oil prices down in the 1980's, bankrupting alternative energy companies. Now, they are back with renewed vigour. Experts maintain 1% of sunlight in Sahara desert can meet world energy needs eventually. We also have baking sunlight, so we should also benefit. Even oil is only re-released sunlight from animal & plants. Soon we can tap sunlight to directly convert the endless source. Solar cos are priced 10 times oil cos based on earnings!

Rather than pledging family jewels, do we have a way out before 2050? Maybe other critical national security issues are involved. That we leave to the poor & mostly illiterate electrorate to decide!

This article is timely for those who are against nuclear popwer .For next generation Industrial growth,to run heavy Industries ,growing use of more and more Information Tecknology,to run fastest train with 500 km per hr speed,to make every village with electricity, modern farming, irrigation, housing for 1 billion people, world class roads, railway system, modern 24 hours super speciality healthcare, school, colleges everywhere pwers are required for coming 50 years .So we cannot wait more to get power .Nuclear power is the ultimate energy to save the earth from disaster of using fosil power, hydel power, thermal power. What Dr. Manmohan Singh has done to sign civil nuclear power with one of the most modern country in the world USA will be remembered with golden letter with this 2nd economic liberisation. If just 17 years has taken India to grow as a fastest economy in the world after economic liberisation in 1991 initiated by late PM P.V.Narsimha Rao with Dr. Manmohan Singh,I am sure this 2nd liberisation will put India to a super power position in all respects in the world with in 10 years cosidering most young intectuals(all most 25% populations) in the age group 25 to 35 and most experts(all most 15%) in all fields are available in India .So even India donot need any others help from other countries to grow further. We only needs to wipe out corruptions compltely from every where including politicians .People will understand Dr. Manmohan after 10 years from now .
