Yes,a functioning government,on its own, need not go for proving its strength unless demanded by the opposition/s for a simple reason of common sense that it has been installed on the throne based on enjoyment of its proven majoriy which did happen in 2004 itself when it took over the reigns. However,it is under an onus to prove its majority on the floor of parliament if a no-confidence motion is moved by any of the opposition parties. Rumours are rife that BJP is asking any of the other opposition parties to move the motion out of the feeling of a suffering of the blemish of blatancy to pull down the govt-paticularly when it is conscious of peole's pulse that, having originally intiated the deal,it should not have done.Whether the motion is to be sought by the BJP or other opposition party, there is no escape for Congress than to prove its majority. And as correctly opined by the legal luminiaries, since some of the SP members are rumoured lurking,in all probabilty,it would be asked to prove only on the floor of parliament AND NOT by production of letters of support. As the position is clear,it may not involve any constitutional entanglements requiring the lady President to struggle any for solution unless she prefers to favour blatantly & benefit some body for obvious reasons.Madam Pratibha needs to prove her "pratibha" (intelligence)in dealing the situation without giving a chance & incurring any untoward criticism casting aspersions on her integrity.Let us watch & see
Puppet President, Mrs Patil, will be under Sonia Maino to gave her notorious Govt. Patil's true colour will be exposed soon, since she had lot of bad, fraud and criminal records.
some of so called constututional experts and even some presidents speak on party lines. when there is no specific provision it is commonsence and dharma which prevails.
If PM is confident of the numbers, he will move a confidence motion. If the opposition is convinced that it has the numbers it will move a no-confidence motion. So the result is foregone depending on who acts first. Our politics have come to the lowest ebb ever.

Yes the result is foregone. We will have the confidence vote within 10-15 days. The President will give this range to the Congress
In the text books of year 2020... There used to be a party called Congress, headed by Italian Mafia, that ruled India from 1950 - 2008, except for a few years. During its rule, India did not have any oppurtunity to improve.

It reminds that your Senile leader - LK Advani said during the runup to the Lok Sabha polls of 2004.
He said he was worried that the Congress will slip to double digits. And yet the Congress rules the roost and Advani sits PM in Waitinggggg
Let us not imagine that this is not the first worst situations that is being faced by President of India. The way in which the present President of India was elected will see to it that at any cost The Sonia Congress will be made to be in power even after the general election where there is no ray of hope for Congress even with their alliance will have near absolute majority. With this in mind only Sonia has made the present President. Now, our honorable Lady President has got her turn to show HER loyalty to Italian Citizen. So let us not worry about anything where no sense is regarded and only NONSENSE alone works. Thanks to another ANTI INDIAN party that has come to light. Yes I am talking about ANTI LABOUR PARTY-CPI[M] and their allied groups. Okay, for this i am not saying that only Congress and their allied group alone behave like this. Almost every party in INDIA behalves like this. But compared to others, CONGRESS, CPIM, DMK, RJD, SP etc all worst to the core and does not have any sort of Patriotism towards Country INDIA. So INDIA can survive only if it is not in the hands of these parties. Only then MOTHER INDIA will have independence. Let us hope that day may come sooner. K. P. Mani, TRUE Indian Citizen.
Excellent! It will do India & Indians a world of good if she does some work. As it is, she just heats up the cushions in Rashtrapati Bhavan & eats up tax money (paid compulsorily by hard working citizens). Being appointed a Rubber Stamp by Interested Parties, she has been relishing in the status of being just a Flower Pot, all along.
