SEOUL -- Tens of thousands of people demonstrated in South Korea's capital Saturday against U.S. beef imports. It was the second-largest rally in a series of near-daily protests held for the past two months prompted by concerns over the safety of American beef imports.
A rally on June 10 drew a crowd estimated by police at about 80,000.
"Start renegotiation!" the protesters chanted, raising their candles to the sky. A large placard tied to balloons above them read "Complete renegotiation! Candles will prevail."
The demonstrators want an April agreement under which South Korea agreed to resume imports of U.S. beef rescinded and renegotiated.
The deal has sparked public outrage amid widespread perceptions, fanned in part by sensational media reports, that it exposes the country to a higher risk of mad cow disease. The protesters are also denouncing other policies of President Lee Myung-bak, including his plan to privatize state corporations.
WASHINGTON -- US banks' trading profits fell 84 percent in the first quarter as they continued to be slammed by losses on mortgage-linked securities and other complex financial instruments.
Banks' trading gains of $1.13 billion were down from $7 billion in the year-ago period, according to a report released Thursday by the Treasury Department's Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. The credit crisis started out last year as defaults rose among subprime loans made to US borrowers with poor credit. It has since spread to other types of loans and securities backed by those loans.
Total global losses from the mortgage and credit problems are projected to approach $1 trillion.
WASHINGTON - The United States lost jobs for a sixth month in a row in June, a storm of pink slips drenching this year's July Fourth holiday for more than 60,000 Americans and leaving thousands more worried about the future. US employers cut workers from their payrolls for the sixth straight month in June for the longest losing employment streak since 2002, government data on Thursday showed. [Agencies]
Weighed down by energy prices and the housing crisis, employers laid off workers in stores, factories and forsaken building sites.
With more job cuts expected in coming months, there's growing concern that many people will pull back on their spending later this year when the bracing effect of the tax rebates fades, dealing a dangerous setback o the shaky US economy. These worries are rekindling recession fears. There were 8.5 million unemployed people as of June, up from 7 million a year earlier.
Heavy job losses were reported in construction, manufacturing and financial services - the worst casualties of the housing, credit and financial debacles. Cutbacks also came in retailing, temporary help, trucking, publishing and elsewhere.
Just know how US was created. They started Fur and fishing trade with Red Indian, now whole america is theirs. Same will happen to India if they will never take lesson from history of British East India company. Those who in developing world want to be partner or friend with US always pays heavy price. Take the example of Shah of Iran, King Faisal of Saudi Arabia, Charles Taylor of Liberia, Zia-ul- Haq and Bhutto of pakistan, Anwar Sadat of Egypt, Saddam and dozen others. US record as a friend and partner is always bad. India still want to go ahead then they will regret for centuries.

Only without confidence , men want to get support! THOSE WHO THINK OF ALLIANCES WITH ANYBODY ARE CHEATS , WITH NO CONFIDENCE! Last 61 years have shown that CONGRESS CANT DO ANY GOOD TO THE PEOPLE!THEY ONLY MULTIPLIED THE PEOPLES' PROBLEMS! LAST 31 YEARS HAVE SHOWN THAT COMMUNISTS CAN DESTROY AS HAPPENED IN WEST BENGAL !ALL ESTABLISHED INDUSTRIES HAVE BEEN DESTROYED AND NOW THEY ARE TRYING TO DESTROY AGRICULTURE TOO IN THE NAME OF SETTING UP OF INDUSTRIES AT SINGUR , NANDIGRAM ! ALLIES HAVE NO VOICE AND ARE USELESS! OTHERS MEAN BUSINESS AND MAKE MONEY! THERE FORE IT IS WISE TO ABANDON ALL PARTIES WHO CANT FORM AN INDIVIDUAL SOLID GROUP LIKE THE CONGRESS ENJOYED AT ONE TIME DURING NEHRU !AND OF COURSE THEY DIDNOT DO MUCH! THE ELECTION COMMISSION HAS TO TAKE UP AND IF THEY FAIL THEY ARE TO BE TAKEN UP FOR FAILURES ! THEY HAVE TO DELIVER A WELL MANAGED ELECTION PROCESS NOT LIKE WEST BENGAL WHERE THE ELECTRONIC VOTING MACHINES WERE MANIPULATED TO MAKE CPM WIN! ONE TOPIC LEADS TO OTHER ! A TOTAL CHAOS HAS TO BE ELIMINATED BY A TOTAL MANAGEMENT BUT IT IS ABSENT TODAY !SO PEOPLE YOU SUFFER !ITS BETTER TO THROW AWAY TRIED PARTIES LIKE CONGRESS AND LEFTISTS ! BJP TOO HAS TO HAVE UNITARY MAJORITY NO COALITION PLEASE OR IT IS BLACKMAILED ! "2009 MUST SEE A CLEAN INDIA OR PEOPLE YOU SUFFER"
See i agree that it is a long term game plan of US to use India as a counter weight to China in Asia, and this deal is a step in that direction.
But we must also examine our present position and the benefits that we get from the deal.
Currently our Uranium reserves are very low and hence our nuclear reactors are running at 30-40% capacity. This deal will ensure guaranteed supply of Uranium to India.
Of our 22 reactors, 14 will be placed under IAEA supervision, and 8 can be used for military puposes. but more importantly India has retained the right to develop future breeder reactors for its military program. This is a major concession as it means that Russia can build a few more reactors for us and these will not be monitored.
Lastly, we cannot ignore the very real threat from China. It is not only building stockpiles of nuclear weapons and uranium for itself but also supplying the same to Pak. Ie China has a long term policy of cornering India from 2 sides. India can never hope to match China......in the near term atleast. Hence we require the US help as much as they require ours.

US will certainly help China indirectly by making India disable as China and US are biggest trading partner and Pakistan will also benefit from all this as they will continue to develop nuclear weapons and Indian will be stopped. There is hidden game which Indian will only understand after paying heavy price.....

BJP kaa sevak hoon nahee par icchhaa zaroor rakhtaa hoon. They are the people who talked about development and only development during their 5 year term. No reservations talk no muslim apeasement, no divisive talks. Those 5 years were golden for India. Being an Indian how can you support a govt. who are hands in glove with terrorists. Doesn't your blood boil to see terrorists celeberating when the order to transfer 100 acres of Land to Amarnath Shrine board was revoked. Eve if you guys are muslims, you should be worried how Kashmiri Terrorists are celeberating their victory...And above all Congress has tie up with these terrorists in Kashmir and MMS govt. at center suggested the congress govt. in Kashmir to give up to terrorists. If you are Indian you should have condemned it..

dude, nothing wrong with being honest about it. Good luck with your dreams ... may they come true for you! God bless!
All this government has done is transfer of power from PM to the Italian origin head of Congress. Now they are saying they will increase the power generation with this nuke deal. Let's hope they do that. The real use of this deal is becoming a nuclear power without signing NPT and getting advanced technologies without restrictions.

What does US get from this deal? It's business will grow in India and it can make India a real strategic partner. US will be able to twist the arms of India to some extend but we can't help it. If we need to grow to challenge Chinese domination in this region we need American help.

US gets to cap, roll back and eleiminate India's nuclear weapons capability ( their long term goal and they don't even hide it), sell India second hand self blowing weapons and equipment at an exhorbitant price, use India's army for its own purposes...

You are being stupid here. What's wrong with the "oil price in France" comment? US will try to use India in containing China, that's what he meant.

I am a bit confused......From what u have written, India will greatly benefit from the deal right? then u should be thanking MMS and Sonia.
RE:RE:Italian power!
by Mahesh on Jul 06, 2008 03:28 AM Permalink
Thank Sonia? That's the biggest joke. She messed up the handling of the deal from the beginning. MMS threat of resignation scared this super PM into falling in line. After carrying her feet on his head for four years, MMS decided to stand up once. Believe me he will not be projected as the next PM if Congress wins the next elections.
RE:Italian power!

all said, the fact remains that the Congress supported the deal whereas BJP and commies opposed it. thats all that matters.
u may be very soft-spoken and yet work for Indian interests, or conversly u may be shouting from roof tops abt ur patriotism but when the time comes to demonstrate it u end up doing things which will benefit China.
