NEW DELHI: Adding another twist to the Sethusamudram controversy, Director General of the Coast Guard on Thursday said that the project poses a security threat to the country. Vice Admiral RF Cotractor said that there is a strong possibility of the canal being used by militants. Without mentioning the LTTE directly, Contractor said that the narrow canal would put the ships moving through it at a greater risk of attack by terrorists active in the region. He also confirmed that he has already conveyed his views about the project to government. Earlier, Naval chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta's had said that the Sethusamudram project would be useful only for small ships. He added that the project was economically unviable as both the Navy and international shipping agencies would not be able to use the canal. The project, if it becomes operational, would incur a loss of Rs 3,000 crore every year, he claimed. The Sethusamudram canal would be only 12 meters deep, and only ships weighing up to 30,000 tonnes would navigate through it.

Understand the geography of Palk strait first.
If the cannal is opened. Shipps keep travelling. Btw there is no ships and sea transports in that region now because of the geography of Palk strait.Hence the requirement of cannal. Only tamil fisherman appears in the sea and sinhalese army comes there and kills the tamil nadu fisherman now.
So when naval traffic is more, it is good for Tamilnadu fisherman as srilankan army cannot intrude into our indian waters. Now since there is no traffic they can easily intrude and kill our TN fisherman.
Comming to your point. If sea traffic is more after cannal is opened how would LTTE can intrude into indian sea waters?.
Next assume there is a attack on india from Bay bengal by our enemies.How would the indian navy from Arabian sea can give military support to the navy in Bay of Bengal?.
From Bombay, goa and from kerala shores to reach Chennai, Vizag it takes more time friend. Our naval ships has to travel all around srilanka from Mumbai, Trivandrum to reach chennai to defend our territory. It takes more time dear.
To protect our sea borders, SETHU CANNAL is a must.This will reduce the travelling time of ships travelling from Arabian sea to bay of bengal by 50%. Retired naval chief is a fool.Its shame that he is/was a naval chief for indian navy.
