Why not live on campus?
by Sameer Bhagwat on Jan 21, 2008 06:27 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I have noticed that most Indian students in the US prefer to live off campus as its cheaper but fail to consider the safety aspect. Its best to live on campus even if costs are higher and rooms are smaller.

Dear fellow Indian students in the US,

For your own good, please stay away from blacks and areas inhabited by them. Don't listen to people who say blacks are not a problem. Political correctness can cost you your life. Some blacks may be good, but from my and many of my friends' experience in US, I have seen that many blacks are pretty violent or aggressive. You can act as if you are politically correct to the outside world, but within yourselves, just remember to avoid blacks.

who will pay for the higher costs? Do you even know how costly the on campus dorms are? As some one who went through the financial crunch, its highly impossible to pay for on campus housing. That said, I agree with PULSAR. Be always on alert and go out in groups. Not alone.

For on campus accomodation you need to pay for the whole period or at least for 3 months in advance; that is a lot of money. A lot of families who rent out out rooms to the students take weekly payments and it is much cheaper.
There is another problem. In off campus accomodation you can cook you own meals and save a lot. For on campus you may have to eat from the university cafe, which is expensive. Also nothing much will be available from the campus shops during the holidays and weekends, which means starvations unless you have your own car.

Let me add my condolences

I was deeply saddened and shocked when I heard about the two Indian Grad students killed in Baton Rouge, LA. However, when I heard about Abhijit's death so close to home, it was doubly shocking and saddening.

As a long time resident of Durham, NC and having been associated with Duke University and IIT for quite a while as well, this is too close to home not to be affected in a deeper fashion.

I would like to challenge the Greater Indian community (I mean the naturalized citizens, Green Card holders, student visa holders and the Indians living in India)to come together and turn the collective anger and grief into concrete action that will help prevent future incidents like these.

Here are my observations about Durham, NC and I will be glad to try and answer any questions any of you may have about the area.

1. There has been a lot of criminal activity targeted at hispanics lately (because of their immigration status largely). They are unable or unwilling to report crimes to police. This makes them an attractive target for gangsters and the usual unsavory characters. It is possible that because of where he lived, he may have been mistaken for one.

2. The area around Duke Univ is a low income (relatively speaking, but not a "high crime" district like Baltimore). This is not to say that crimes do not happen there. This is a subjective observation, of course.

3. There is a crying need to get the University administrators in the USA to react to crimes against "fo

There is poverty in many areas of US. That does not mean that poor people will start murdering foreign students!
This murder is sinister. We cannot just explain it away by racial bias or poverty.

Yes, I agree, it was a very sad event. May God bless his soul. I hope the murderers and true motive is uncovered soon.

Why only Indian Students?
There are all nationality students studying in various Universities and colleges but why target only Indian students?Because they are more intelligent than others and have different color race. Its time for all Indians living 9in USA to unite and bring this discrimination upto senate.

The MOST disturbing thing is that these are Indian STUDENTS.. mind you STUDENTS. They are not gang_sters or stuff like that.

MANY years ago, India's neighboring country people had engineered the murder of Hind_u temple leaders in Canada, with the help of local black M'_usl_ims. I think the police and FBI and also Indian Embassy need to review this angle.

This is serious, and I am not joking. If you don't believe, please Google/Yahoo old articles. ALso incude the key words Al F_uqra (sp?), which is a t'_er_ror unit... which has attempted b_om'b'ing of temples and mur'd_ers in North America.

I hope the police and FBI investigate this angle too.
