The DRDO perhaps should employ illegal arms-makers from Bihar and UP. This will have twin benefits:- 1. The manufacture of illegal arms will decrease. 2. The standard of small arms will improve. People will be surprised to know how these illiterate mechanics and black-smiths can copy sophisticated pistols, carbines and even AK-56. Need evidence? Check with the Naxals and the Maoists in these states.
It is unjust to expect DRDO developing and making missiles. How can a mammoth organisation, predominantly run by the bureaucrats, can make missiles whereas it has failed to make even a rifle on its own! Shame on them and their abilities....its all farce and fooling the nation and enjoying on tax-payers' money. Even if India purchases every weapon and equipment from abroad, still it will be much cheaper than the DRDO.
I think DRDO is much maligned, it has iits weaknesses like any other institution of our country. I would like to highlight that - R&D requires toil and encouragement. IGMDP has to be seen in context of what the other countires would have given us. Today our drvelopments in AAD (Anti Air Defence) are world class. Having been associated with the induction of Prithvi- I am aware of its shortcomings but I also respect the dedication, hard work and pride of the scientists working on the project. To look at DRDo's nemesis - Arjun, LCA etc in correct perspective - could you please introspect that our country had its first truly Indian car - Indica(with imported components) in 90s and we still do not have a commercial aircraft!! R&D needs support from industry and the products for refining need to be used more (exported) - all of which over which we have no control. having said this- DRDO has its own share of ego's and our famous habbit of empire buiding.
DRDO needs to change - but so do our Armed Forces, Railway's etc.

DRDO basically put in their mouths more than they could chew. Its illogical to make a weapon system and expect the armed forces to use them as per DRDO's visions, it means putting cart before a horse! By the way which AAD system you have mentioned here? There are NONE for use and deployment. In fact Indian AAD is the oldest and out-of date even by Bangladesh Army standards. Shame on you for boasting about nothing. DRDO cannot even design a decent pistol or carbine for the forces, taking of making missiles is a far cry.
I read above article and I don't think that only DRDO is responsible for the delays or in developing the war machines. We are comparing DRDO with those agencies which are developing these types of mochines over 100 years. To develop any war machine we need time, money and skilled brain power, in which we are lacking. We should remember that to develop the atom bomb US agencies failed many times.
So, we should not critisized while we should encourage young youth and good brain to join DRDO.

In fact the work culture and administration need major overhaul. Take ISRO for example, they achieve much more for much less as compared to DRDO. I have first hand experience in dealing with some of them and share their frustration due to mis-managed higher-ups who live in fools-paradise.
I dont think imports are the answer, unless you want to enrich the middlemen in which game india is the pasmaster (After all Dalal and dalali is a national pastime !). Private companies (majority indian shareholder, of course) should be encouraged to produce state of the art defence production. After all, we have seen that the 'gormint' (babus and politicians) are the not the best or the most patriotic.
Let in private players in defence, especially the Tatas who can motivate scientists and also pay them lavishly which invevitably will produce the finest armaments. The key words are a responsbile and ethical company with staff of high calbre. Maybe a synthesis of Tatas and Mr. Murthy or Infosys would be awinning combination for indian defence.

Absolutely correct! Gone are the days of Nehruvian concept of development. Unless they let in private players and give them even play-ground, this sloth organisation will never improve.

Please show results....government and the people will be too happy to increase salaries. The work culture must change 180 degrees or else the employees will continue to escape or live with low morale.
