hello the middle class and upper classes so totally blind themselves to the poor, they are surprised that teh world looks at teh population as a hwole to make its impresiions. The majority of India is poor, undernourished and growing at a rapid pace.Rather than clearing the opinions of the Americans you might want to open your own eyes...
My dear Dhruv, if its frightening to think what people of India, then you will CERTAINLY DIE OF SINGLE MASSIVE STROKE, IF YOU KNOW WHAT INDIAN MINISTERS, POLITICIANS, MPs, MLAs & IAS ETC. ACTUALLY DO. THATS WHY ALL INDIANS STOPPED THINKING WHAT ALL THESE PEOPLE ACTUALLY DO, OTHERWISE THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN 1000 TIMES LONG AGO.
americans may be materially sound but it shows how much lacking they are in thier knowledge about the world in general and not only about india.we indians at least the educated have so much knowledge and we also try to gain knowlege from different sources.one good thing about our country is that if anybody wants to find or know about anything there is no lack of facilities and sources.

Follow-up from what Suraj Singh said. He is absolutely correct. The single brilliant Idea that India still clings to in shaping the perception of India is Taj Mahal, nothing worth while has been done after that.
There's nothing beyond Taj Mahal to woo tourists or intellectuals towards India. Same old poverty stricken people, disease, corruption and complete lack of respect for a fellow human being unless someone is filthy rich.

Despite fake identity(?), the question is valid. Perhaps use of 'Non-violence' as a political strategy by Gandhiji is/ was one such 'brilliant idea.

ha...we are paying the price for that pacifism till now, the audacity of pakis thought that they can conquer kashmir bears testimony to that fact.

Gandhiji reluctantly agreed to partition. When jinnah and nehru both were un-relenting. Let us forget that and look forward. This might be the biggest traedy in human history, but the chapter is closed now.

An American (thinking): Indians are dirty. Indians are poor. Indians are malnourished.
An Indian (usually thinking): Biharis are dirty. Biharis are poor. Biharis potty next to railway tracks. Biharis have no respect for the law. Biharis do not travel with tickets in train.
Lets get this straight, if you do not travel much and have not been exposed to different culture and places you are bound to have stereotypical image that you see around you(media too is reponsible). Mind you we indians are no different with people in Cow-belt thinking Chennai is the place where all are absolutely dark and it is so hot that they cant survive. And people from South and other places might think all in cowbelt are poor and have no food to eat and are illiterate and criminals. The only thing we fail to understand is that we cannot generalise people and stereotype them. I mean you look at this article, I can very clearly evolve analogy that seems to be what most of India thinks about UP/Bihar and what the entire world thinks of India...

True, I come from bihar, and have faced very similar questions from my colleagues(I'm in bangalore).
Its just that people who dont "know" and dont travel, have some kind of perception which is mostly dependent on the inputs from different sources of media and by rumours-of-mouth. Can't help much about these guys :-|
after all its posted by 15yrs old Kid. I am living in Canada for 5 yrs now but all i have been asked is about the growing technology.Indeed india is poor, it would take them years to adverse this living condition. Its not easy at all to control a billion population with proper education and medicare. Indian business are in the global news all the time, 60% indians outshone in their career on western world compare to only 30% of the native residents. History cannot be erased completely to give a modern India. and it should not be erased........after all thats the integrity of the country.
