why should we worry about USA !!
by manoo kaushal on Feb 29, 2008 12:23 AM  Permalink

This article show defeated mentality of Indians.
Why the hell we need to correct the view of Americans ? That immature nation of a few arrogant people gets wrong view about world's greatest civilization , should we worry ?
This artcle shows innate tartuffery in NRIs.
We should treat ourselves as greatest culture of the world , not someone trying to imitate America .

Let Indian know about India first then expect it from Americans
by KunaleSunil on Feb 29, 2008 12:23 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Its not surprising at all, we should not expect an American to know about many other hundred countries.I know few of my friends in Delhi when I was in India asking me about Madrasi is being south Indian lauguge, many don't know there are four different laugages spoken in four different states and Madrasi is not the lauguage name. Many even do not know these states are diversed in out look, culture, and lifestyle apart from languges.
South is stereo typed as hot climate with colored people forgetting that our most admired beauties (rekha, Hema malili, Wahida Rahman, Sridevi,Aishwarya, Shilpa shetty to mention a few) come from this so called ugly part of India. First let Indians know about India and then expect Americans to know about it.

Dear friends i have worked in gulf and u will be surprised at what egyptians and lebanese people think about indians. they think indians are poor people and dont know anything about computers. indians shuld be treated like slaves. even the philipino people living in uae dont treat indians properly. u will find this whenever u visit a fast food joint in uae how the philipine people treat u.

No wonder
by Haramohan Ray on Feb 29, 2008 12:21 AM  Permalink

No wonder, because most Americans are horribly poor in general knowledge, as has been proved by various surveys. Moreover, the President of that country has in fact challenged the theory of Darwin. But, all Americans are certainly not like this.

Hmm
by Kaushik Das on Feb 29, 2008 12:20 AM  Permalink

Well, facts:
1. India IS a 3rd world nation, although it may change soon if we continue the progress.
2. India IS poor. Just because our rich ar ethe richest in the world, it does not imply that India, the country, is rich. Our poor are starving, malnourished, etc. For that matter, our 'middle' class, although growing, is also not completely nourished. They're better than the poor only because they are not starving but that does not imply they are well-off. Most middle class people still don't own their homes (the loans are being paid). Most of them dread going to a doctor because doctors and medicines are expensive, even by Indian standards.
3. India has a huge electricity problem - even in New Delhi, there are hours of power cut - so much so that generators of many 'affluent' societies have worn out. In Girgaon, an industrial hub, most of the work is done by generators.
4. It is indeed good that they ask you these questions. However, in Europe, you'd find people more well-read and knowing a lot about India. They won't ask you these stupid questions. now, would Indians ask a foreigner about their country? I guess Indians would assume that every foreigner is an 'angrez' and would be least interested in wonderful european countries like norway, denmark, sweden, etc.
5. You said one very right thing, kid. If India had less population, we would definitely have less poor - because then exploitation would be less and mutual dependency would be more than now.

No wonder, because several studies have repeatedly proved that general knowledge of most Americans is horrible. Moreover, the President of that country has in fact challenged the theory of Darwin. Can we expect anything better? But, all Americans are certainly not like this.

What's wrong in challenging darwin's theory? It is proven that Darwin's theory is not sufficient and cannot be taken as it. I can challenge you on that. Since you didn't have limited knowledge about Darwin's theory, I can't say that your general knowledge is poor. Well, it is enough and sufficient for the situation but if you're talking to well-versed person than it is a different story.

the biggest mistake we all make and cause of most of our troubles is that we consider hinduism a religion whereas its a philosophy of living and also why one cannot be converted into hindu but just be born into it.

I want to share a story
by talk fame on Feb 29, 2008 12:17 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Once upon a time there was an indian software engineer working in US. His name was DesiDude. He was working in his cube and overheard one of his american co-worker talking to a friend. The conversation was as follows:

All Indians are dirty.
All Indians are poor.
All Indians are thieves.
All Indians are malnourished.

DesiDude, being an Indian, was really upset and infuriated. However, he kept his calm and got back to work. Few minutes later, one of his Indian friends came to his desk and they started talking about the issues faced by Mumbai due to immigrants from other parts of India especially UP/Bihar. DesiDude, without thinking, started the conversation as follows:

All Biharis are dirty.
All Biharis are poor.
All Biharis are thieves.
All Biharis are malnourished.

Hmmmm, need I say more??

Not sure if you're the same golden of yore but this post of yours is actually good. And hindootwa philosophy very strongly targets this aspect of human nature. However, since, we are a 'secular' nation, we cannot follow hindootwa, can we? so, therefore, what you mention in yoiur post will forever remain uncured.

This in not about imitating anyone but for clarifying their doubts. Being a NRI, I know how ignorant people are about India.

Cup is half full!
by Siva N on Feb 29, 2008 12:14 AM  Permalink

I lived in the USA for several years (since late 80s) but I have seen the knowledge about India improve dramatically over years. I was asked questions like "do you guys eat pop-corn in India?" by my CEO in my cafeteria (late 80s) to a refrigerator repairman asking me whether everyone from India worked on Software!(early 90s). I have personally seen people having quiet a bit of respect for the Indians (in the North eastern states at the least). Also with movies like "Gandhi", "making killer out of Gandhi" is a common phrase in many sitcoms. You must have recently seen "Raj" as a sitcom character and "Aliens in America" and Indians being accepted in the main stream!.

I need to acknowledge though that a small cross section of people are ignorant - I was also asked at least once whether "I ate monkey brains" after watching Steven Spielberg movie - Indian Jones and the Temp of Doom! (early 90s) I had to vehemently deny I ate any of that and I was a veggie! Also people asking about elephants and snakes roaming all over (dusty Indian roads!)

Oh well,

Regards,
Siva
