The last 17 years of Free Market economy in India has changed the economic scenario in the country. Things have changed fo the better. Economic Growth rate is high, GDP is high and India is one of the largest economies in the world. This is one side of the story that we often hear. Well, most of them are true. But on the other hand, there is another story. Largest economy means more economic growth but certainly does not mean rich economy. The largest economy is becos of the large population. This large population is a big burden for the economy. No matter how much the economy grows ,things will out of control due to overpopulation. Secondly, with the rise of GDP and economic growth, the inflation rate is also rising probably at a faster rate than the other two. The situation of the common man remains equally tight as it was 20 years before except for the fact that now he can watch corporate interest-backed Song and dance/celebrity competitions in a more well decorated Idiot Box. Hope atleast India does not turn ot to be another Argentina. Therefore the perception of India outside as gathered from the article may be quite wrong but it also does not mean India is free of poverty, starvation and provides good quality of life for the middle class(which even developing tiger economies like Malaysia, Korea and Taiwan can provide).Just an emergence of the New rich and a few high salaried IT and MNCs guys do not reflect that India is on its way to become a fully developed nation.
few American views cannot be considered as global view. few american don't even know that Hitler is dead and there is democracy in Germany . My German collegue is always pounded with this kind of question when ewver he visits US.
I think the kid who has written this is in the company of thier own, I mean these are kids they wouldnt be knowing much about India, so dont think that this is the perception of professional people about India.

There is a difference between optimists and pessimists. I suggest you show yourself to some mental doctor. You are either an extreme pessimist or an anti-hindu or both.

Any one who talks about caste system automatically becomes anti-hindu..stupid you go and check you mental balance. the real revolution lies in questioning the wrong not just dreaming about some utopian future under the guise of being an optimist

Well said! No optimist will ever manage to improve the world - they see no need; you always require a pessimist to improve it.

Correction... a pesimist will think that nothing is going to change and will never try to improve it.
I have recently moved to Australia, and in some time have realized what this article states. Majority of people think India is a poor third world country. They get really surprised when I tell them India is en route to become the second biggest economy in the world, over the US and in the future 50 years, possibly the biggest too.

dream on; you dont have to do anything to day dream. It might become a bigger economy but the real threat is it will be a combination of California ( may be 10% of the population ) and Sub-saharan africa ( 90% of the population )....god knows what will happen to a country in such a situation. Anyway, you have escaped to a better place; just see how you can settle there...indirectly people who settle abroad help India by reducing its population

No Kittappa dude, Conditions in India are improving faster than you anticipate. All situations strive for equilibrium and this is the phase where South Asia (mainly India) is going up. I myself intend to gain some work experiance for a few years and settle in India. Ten years back, no one dreamed of the infrastucture India has today. Ten yeras back the US infrastructure was no different from what it is now. I believe for this century India is the place. maybe someday, India will be bigger and the west/Aus will strive to be like India to get that equilibrium. maybe i'm just dreaming, but India's progress atleast has let us dream.

that is true Kittappa, People work for themselves. Being selfish, very few people would migrate back to India to make India better. I am saying I will come back to India because India is a better option. Sure, infrastucture is better here, population density is less, air is cleaner........ india has oppertunity. So why am I abroad now. Because face it, these guys are more advanced. As soon as I try and pick up as much as I can, I would love to back in India.

1. Every year, about 120,000 indians entered into the U.S. under H-1B and visitor's visa. Only 10percent of these people will actually leave. 2. An average indain came to the U.S. with less than $200. under his/her name. 3. They beat the immigration system by fictitious jobs, fake marriages, over extend their visas criminally. 4. Most Indians fabricated their education and employment in job application. 5. Indians are the most likely people to intentionaly fraud in tax.

Every society has ills. Its not only in India. Instead of crying hoarse are you doing anything back in India to oppose. Like exposing the system of Devadasi and bringing their plight to the forefront. Its human tendency to talk good things about their motherland when talking to outsiders. Not only Indians all other country's folks do. So do not waste your bile, in crying hoarse about this. I when I talk about India, I talk about both good and bad, and still I feel proud about India.
Dear friends, Forget about Americans or other european know about us ? How much Indians Know about Bangladesh and China ? How much we know about whole history to Europe North and South America ? Only problem with Indians are that they are egoistic and Racist We have completely forget humbleness I live in small South American country for 6 months now ..........Not even once there is a power cut !!!!!!!!!!.......... and you want to say Mera Bharat Mahan ... What for ...........we have to make our country best -----let other say Tumhara Bharat mahan One India Unite India Outside India nobody cares which part of India we belong to
RE:Howmuch we know about Bangladesh and China ?

South America has lots of natural resources and very little population. Not havign power cuts is not a big deal there. In India it is! That is simple economics. And India is working on ways out of it. The civilian nuclear deal with the US is one example.

its no big deal, why don't we have it ? we also have plenty of natural resources .....in Villages there is no power for many hours in all summer................what are you talking about ?????? Still you talking about Nuclear deal means without America we can't do anything ? Wake up guys our whole development which you are talking about America oriented, unlike China ......they rule the world ...........cause we are narrow minded people ........wake up

Well all the developed countries have developed at the cost of developing countries.
Europe: They had colonialized everybody else. They still enjoy natural resources from other countries.
US and South America: Where are all the native americans? The entire race was wiped out to provide good life for a few number of migrant europeans.
Australia: The plight of living aboriginals is worse than people living in indian slums. But we never get that new in mainstream media.
Africa: It's still being exploited.
India: We are really lucky to have escaped the fate of what happened in US and Australia. Though the British ruled us for 200yrs... somehow we survived...

BTW Chinese did nothing on their own. All their technology is Russian based. Go and check out the details if you don't know. For research, you need time, resources and money. Neither India nor China had either of that three decades back. In fact, India did much more original development than China. Now, it is a race. Nobody can sit and wait while the godown is looted. So why not American help? It is a democratic nation and a natural ally of India.

You wake up benicenow... wake up to the reality of the second largest population of the world. Singing hymns of South America or any well endowed geographical part of the world is not going to get you or the country anywhere.

BTW are you from Bengal/ North East or Kerala? Sounds like that to me!
The Chinese Farmers Market in LA (very much like the sabji mandis of North India sans free-roaming cows) is one of the topmost attractions of the city. Why don't the Americans clamor there about the hawkers and stuff sold out in the open? Once again the problem is not how the West looks at us, but how we look at ourselves. Why would someone not take advantage of it if they could? And finally, what do people who such miserably poor self-esteem do? They go out and fight among themselves. Be it the communal riots in Gujarat or the attacks on North Indians in Maharashtra (besides the long chain of very pleasant brotherly messages in this thread), we have proved again and again our "unity" and exclaimed loud and clear that we are a strong united bunch who will eventually destroy urselves if couldn't anybody else. And the West smiles broader...
