Think about
by Meethilesh on Mar 01, 2008 03:21 PM  Permalink

I really feeel that Congress and BJP should come together and for a govt which will last for 5 Years.

BJP should leave Hindutva and Congress should leave secularism for 5 years.

Both should think about the inclusive progress of our country.

Small regional parties and left parties are causing whole lot of problem.

Is there real democracy in this country?
by VASUDEVAN V on Feb 29, 2008 09:35 AM  Permalink

The Speaker talks of democracy when the opposition, especially BJP, is stalling the Parliament. I do not hold a candle for BJP's behaviour. But, let us accept the fact that every political party in this country behaves in a similar manner when in the Opposition. At least the people of this country have not forgotten what the Congress and the Communist MPs did in the Parliament during the NDA regime and especially how they treated George Fernandez. And, where was democracy when the CPI(M) cadres ran riot in Nandigram, under the able guidance of their party leaders? To date I have not heard a single CPI(M) leader condemn his cadres or what happened in Nandigram. In fact, every one of them is justifying what happened in Nandigram. And these CPI(M) leaders, including the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, talk of democracy! What democracy are they talking about? Is there any democracy in their own party? Come on Speaker, wake up! Democracy in our country is only a sham controlled by few influential leaders like Lalu, yourself and the CPI(M) leaders, Sonia (the all powerful Mata), Karunanidhi (well, he is virtually holding the UPA government to ransom at every turn)... the list is quite long. And what democracy are you talking about. If there is true democracy and people's will respected, we would have had Kalam as President today and not Pratibha Patil! Democracy failed us then and will continue to fail us, the people of this country!

No scruples!
by shiva on Feb 29, 2008 07:09 AM  Permalink

When we gained independence, Pandit Nehru spoke about tryst with destiny. Now it is free for all, with our MPs conduting themselves with abject disregard to discipline. It is becoming clear that our democracy is disfunctional by the day. What purpose does it serve? The rich & the educated cannot or rather will not participate, as they feel they are totally out of place in the chaotic system. They know how to survive and are mobile. The poor are sold dreams and they buy them at every election. They are permanently short-changed by these buffoons in the garb of MPs.

Unless, we have a code of conduct, our democracy is meaningless. Why look at western countries, look at the Chinese. They meet every five years for setting policies, electing ever younger leaders, renewing with fresh blood every time. The new leaders are highly educated, some in western countries. Gone are the days of the past, when they could hang on to power like us, feeble and waiting at the door of death to leave finally and stop causing further misery to others. Ditto Russia, Putin is young & dynamic and set demanding standards.

Ours hardly give us any hope and anybody with an iota of self respect will be embarassed at the antic of our elected reps.

Are these people not accountable at all? Does anything goes in Parliament? It looks to be beyond reapair.

Let us have basic self respect!

by raj sreedhar on Feb 29, 2008 01:52 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Indian parliment look more like a zoo compare to British and Australian. MPs dont behave this way. How come nobody see that? These are our elected representative behaving like thugs n the floor. Take a look at how US congress men and Senators behave. Speaker was right. Embarassing to watch these goons from over seas.

well, what do you expect?Criminals with 20-30 police cases including rape, looting, murder, corruption charges among others are the ones entering the parliament. The govt of the day is scared to enact a law that anyone with a police case cannot be eligible for parliament because it is fraught with dangers-half the govt along with its allies would be in jail and same goes for opposition. Also, it is extremely easy to frame someone and file a police case in India. Also, since our great judicial process believes that a man is innocent till proven guilty, all these criminals are given a free hand to contest elections, threaten other candidates, rule by proxy/gunpower/musclepower/money power and subvert the law to suit themselves and their near and dear ones. This is politics...everything is fair game and is the refuge of scoulderals..not just here but in the whole world. politicians across the world are scoulderals...the americans, british, australians etc look good in their suits and look dignified and polished, ours believe in taking the law onto their own hands by fighting pitched battles inside the assembly/parliament, shouting/staging walkouts, gheraoing the hapless speaker. What can be done? lots actually.Make sure you vote.Make sure leaders come from your community by the strength of their convictions, integrity and decisions and not because they are an MP/Minister/Leader's son/daughter/Son in law/nephew etc. Leadership is not genetic, it has to be inculcated.

Is Indian democracy for sale?
by Ramesh Kapoor on Feb 28, 2008 10:25 PM  Permalink

With the look of things and the events in the last four years, it appears the Indian democracy is for sale. All things said about office of profits for politicians etc. only proves my contention. What the Speaker is saying about finishing the democracy is that the present perks enjoyed by these politicians will come to an end. It is all about profit.

Somnath Chatterjee
by samir mehta on Feb 28, 2008 08:07 PM  Permalink

If Somnath Chatterjee cannot regulate the MP's he should quit speakership. The reason why he cannot control them is MP's do not have any respect for him because of his partiality and bootlicking of congress and communist party.
