i dont understand whats such a big deal about aircraft carriers. isnt that just a boat that carries planes too. i mean dont you just have to build a XXL boat. now i know we re technically 50 years behind but are we that bad? this sucks!

India has not allowed private sector companies to take part in defense. So if we are expecting Central govt to invent/mfg everything then it will be "suck" only. Our defence mfg is like russia using outdated technology and hidden from outside.
India should go for both the Gorshkov and the Kitty Hawk. However, the Kitty Hawk deal will cost about $7Billion if the the retrofit and price for 65 F-18's are included. In contrast, even paying the Russians the full 1.5B additional they are asking, that would still be a good buy. We do need the two additional carriers. Once concern with the Kitty Hawk is that it would need a whole array of support vessels to protect it that we don't currently have. So, in the deal, India should also ask for the support vessels.
Having said the above, India should be wary of getting into too much reliance with the US as the US always attaches strings in its offers. On a larger view, India has no choice but to develop a strategic relationship with the US in view of China's aggressive designs against India.

Gates is frightening our PM and our reformers. MMS must recognise what were happened Mushraff, Tony Blair, Japan PM, and Australian PM.
I feel politicians must understand that they need to materialise the deals in the pipeline and needs to go for modernization of the defence capabilities of India as we are hearing voices from the neighbours that are not in line with our national interest and territorial integrity. Its high time that politician learn that these voices can be calmed down only if India has better defence systems compare to its neighbours.
India should purchase AK-47s in bulk to distribute one for every one all over the country. Political lobbying, reservation should apply as usual. Auction should be held before distribution so that celebrities can purchase in advance(though some of them like sanjay dutt have it already!!). A special package for north-east and kashmir is a must.

you are the one who is crazy, Chakrarvarthy nadahan! You cant see the sarcasm in cooolsummers message. Are you really that dumb?
India need to build the latest generation aircraft carriers i.e. nuclear powered ones. It is true that India does not have the technology to do so right now (we are building a conventional one now; and India need at least three such to protect the three sides of coast); and we should collaborate with countries like Israel and France to build such ships. Our deterrence has no meaning without the aircraft carriers. Our sights should be set on the future and the projects should have nuclear powered submarines in mind too.

Yar mujhe to samajh nahin aata ki ye hamare politicians apne scientist per bharosa kyon nahin karte. We should be and if not try to be self-reliant on all fronts especially on defence terms. Nahin to bheek he mangte rahenge aur hamesha peeche hi rahenge. Stop relying on others and invest in our own. Initiate and back up a conducive enviornment for R&D.

kyunki aadhe se jayada budhe scientiston ko unhone hi appoint kiya hai. aur politician jante hain ki unki kitni aaukat hai. Jab tak 35 saal se upar walon ko DRDO se compulsory retirement nahin e diya jaata nothing will change.
India should look for a aircraft carrier at the earliest, before China does any adventure in arunachal or Pak in kashmir. If kitty hawk can be delivered fast, then we should go for it.

History will prove Indian people are not ready to sell of India to America. They remember a Gandhiji and old Congress as well as how Britishers ran away from here.
These old hags are looking for some outdated stuff, put it with some new fresh paint and pay billions of $$ ?? We export technology, we have people, brain power, but we do not have good managers, leaders, visionaries.... We just have some old hags on the top...Viagra isn't working anymore...but Ego is...

Dude.. The stuff is outdated for US ..But it is good enough to frighten pakistan and china for next 20-30 years.. in addition, we get it for less cost also. We should also see that we will get Mig29's(russia) and F/A 18(us) for fighting with our enemies. The real teeth of an aircraft acrrier is its planes, which we are getting latest.
