Thats a very good question.

Unless people get their priorities correct, this cycle will continue.

The only hope is education, appreciating other nations and self reflection.

It has to be a grass roots movement. In democracy, Leaders are only a relection of the people. The people need to change to elect better leaders.

What do Farmers want....???
by imran patel on Feb 27, 2008 07:52 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

People like Mr Mulayam Singh who claim to be the saviours for farmers forget to identify the needs of the farmers.

Why is it that farmers in other countries are financially well off, but in India they are always struggling to meet ends ?

If the government really wants to help farmers, it must start with the following,

- Infrastructure. It is estimated that 40-50% of the vegetable produce of our nation is lost (Rotten) as a result of transportation and lack of cold storage facilities. I do not not propose government starting projects, but encouraging private sector to get involved.

- Industrializing Agriculture. We need technology to improve argiculture. Our argiculture inductry is higly inefficient.

- Trade policies. Government needs to work on foreign trade policies. Farmers must be able to export their produce to different parts of the world.

- Tariffs. We need to eliminate tariffs between different states. Wheat grown in Punjab must be sold in Maharashtra without any Tariff and vice versa.

What government should NOT get involved in is,

- Loans to farmers
- Free seeds
- Animal fodder

This is not the job of the government. Let the private sector handle this. Lets learn some best practices from developed agricultural states/countries and implement them in India.

India is yet to see an argicultural revolution. This is the route to being a strong nation.

And this route does not go through the government. It is the private sector.

tumne mere munh ki baat chheen li.. u r right.
Insted of solving the real problem, they just want quick fix solutions which will keep their vote bank intact. What else they also could do? We have a habit of looking for free stuff. For every problem that we have we beg government to solve it.
When the crops are good farmers sell it to private parties to make money.. when they are bad they want government to pay their loans. When they get loans, insted of using it for they purpose they were given they use it for fancy marriages, parent's shradhha etc etc... noone is to blame but the farmers themselves. Try to solve your problems urself insted of sitting on ass and expecting someone else to solve it. Governtment's job is to help people solve problems, it is ulitimately people who have to solve their problems themselves.

I always look forward to intelligent comments from the forum and many times people who comment are more intelligent than the the one who wrote the article. The blogger aam desi has it right and he/she is crisp.

I was CM. Now I am Farmer ?
by aam desi on Feb 27, 2008 07:31 PM  Permalink

Such people do not remember farmers when they were in power. They were busy with film stars and industrialists - attending weddings and dinner parties. Now that people have booted them out of power and stars and industrialist do not want them because they have become useless. They are now forced to think of the farmers so that they can somehow earn back the seat of power. If not king, try to be king maker with a few seats. Lord help UP from these thekedars.
