Its high time India stops getting cold war machinery from Russia... every month the MIGs are crashing here and their... The Kitty Hawk would be superior vessel than the Gorshkov... and India should opt for the best...Does anybody remember when China tried to invade India in 1962...inspite of sending SOS ...Russia didn't come forward to help India...it was the US 7th Fleet in the Bay of Bengal that threaten the Chinese aggression...
The Deal with Russia is now final. India is agreed to pay a little more for much extra facilities. The toital cost is $2 Billion which is almost half the cost of any aircraft from Western sources. Rediff.com is planting false report.
India should go for both the Gorshkov and the Kitty Hawk. However, the Kitty Hawk deal will cost about $7Billion if the the retrofit and price for 65 F-18's are included. In contrast, even paying the Russians the full 1.5B additional they are asking, that would still be a good buy. We do need the two additional carriers. Once concern with the Kitty Hawk is that it would need a whole array of support vessels to protect it that we don't currently have. So, in the deal, India should also ask for the support vessels.
Having said the above, India should be wary of getting into too much reliance with the US as the US always attaches strings in its offers. On a larger view, India has no choice but to develop a strategic relationship with the US in view of China's aggressive designs against India.

dis is not possible dear do u think india has enough revenue, not only 2 buy them bt d main thng is maintainin them, bcos the peripheral costs of a single carrier comes around $650 million n then v hav a fuul fleged carrier ready,so talkin abt buying both of them is impractical
with russia b1tch1ng abt the price of gorshakov and going byond its promise with the negotiated price , using tactics to force India to pay more, think it is good psy-op pulled by India
sends a clear signal to Russia that , it is noe only the country which makes aircraft carrier.
hope our govt invests and encourages industries in our own country to make all kinda ships, weapaones etc .... we cannot be client state forver, leaving our nation security hostage to some other country !!!!
India defence requiremnets dont need this aircarft carriers, these big deals are designed for kickbacks from defence officails to burecrats. Misuse of public money, india will never go to war with china or pakistan and these aircraft carriers strategically dont make sense. All these big delas means more money to corrupt officials.

What if suddenly we are attacked by them. Better to be safe than sorry. we need to be alert and wquipped. Dont put this kind of argument views that can only make our Indian mothers and sisters prone for humping by paki terrorists and chipmunks.

You are absolutely right. Neither should we be picking on the chinese. The 2 billion dollars can be used to improve our ports and roads. Sign the missile defence with the US and invest in welfare. We would then not have to rely on war. The econmic strength and our pecking order in the international economy will keep us safe.
All this ofcoure if we can get rid of governmental corruption
Understood that India needs only one or two aircraft carriers and hence can't go for setting up an entire manufacturing base, also given that there aren't many countries which will order and buy aircraft carriers!
The thing is - why is India wanting to buy a refurbished aircraft carrier? Why the hell isn't it asking for a brand new carrier to be built for it??!

India is building an aircraft carrier, and also a nuclear submarine to be ready by 2012.

because buying an aircraft carrier is not like buying a TV or fridge that you go to a store and buy. There are many strategic concerns. Also, there are a very few countries that have the capability of building their own ships, leave along a battlegroup strike carrier.Believe it or not, India has this capability in Mumbai,Cochin,Kolkata and Vizag. and it building its own aircraft carrier in mumbai. Giving away a carrier only means the country that owns it wants to retire it and wants to profit from its retirement.India's current geo-strategic situation may not demand a carrier right now, but no one knows how things will pan out tomorrow.A carrier strike group is a force projector and gives the Indian Navy strategic reach.Which is absolutely essential considering our neighbours.By the way, the kitty hawk is coming up for retirement this year and has been working for the past 40 years and the americans want to sell it to us.It is because they have bigger and more powerful carriers like the Nimitz and Enterprise which are nuclear powered and Kitty Hawk is not. Also, it gives the americans strategic leverage when the multi role combat aircraft deal is signed. They can always say, choose the F/A 18, it will work for your navy as well as your airforce and no other country is offering India an aircraft carrier for the fighter jet deal besides the Americans. It is a fully operational vessal when compared to the Gorshkov and gives us an option of choosing sellers. Also, this happens to be
India should start making their own aircraft carriers. This task should be assigned to a conglomerate of provate and public sector industries so that no single entity has a vested interest. They need not be as big and large as the US and Russian ships which are essentially the size of a small country's defense.
More emphasis should also be laid on submarines. India is pathetically under equipped when it comes to submarines.
If the US is interested in selling military equipment to India, India should start with small pieces and test the waters before making any large purchases.

Perhaps India should concentrate on lots of smaller defense oriented carriers to patrol its sea borders with helo fleets and not war-making machines as invented for the cold war by the US and the Russians.
