some of you might be correct to a degree in pointing out that gays are a western phenomenon. but today we have desi gays who are at least as active as their western counterparts, if not more. today you cannot call it a western influence. we have indianized being gay and i can say that we lag behind no country in this field.

I see some guys trying to validate gays by pointing to history. Though ancient India has gays at it is today, that does not mean it was accepted as part of the Indian culture. There is no documentation to prove that Indian culture accepted gayism and lesbianism.
The Indian population proves that Indian culture did not encourage nor validate gays and lesbians
Homosexual sexual behavior occurs in the animal kingdom, especially in social species, particularly in marine birds and mammals, monkeys, and the great apes. Homosexual behavior has been observed among 1,500 species, and in 500 of those it is well documented. This discovery constitutes a major argument against those calling into question the biological legitimacy or naturalness of homosexuality, or those regarding it as a meditated social decision. For example, male penguin couples have been documented to mate for life, build nests together, and to use a stone as a surrogate egg in nesting and brooding. In a well-publicized story from 2004, the Central Park Zoo in the United States replaced one male couple's stone with a fertile egg, which the couple then raised as their own offspring. The genetic basis of animal homosexuality has been studied in the fly Drosophila melanogaster. Here, multiple genes have been identified that can cause homosexual courtship and mating. These genes are thought to control behavior through pheromones as well as altering the structure of the animal's brains. These studies have also investigated the influence of environment on the likelihood of flies displaying homosexual behavior. Georgetown University professor Janet Mann has specifically theorized that homosexual behavior, at least in dolphins, is an evolutionary advantage that minimizes intraspecies aggression, especially among males. Studies indicating prenatal homosexuality in certain animal s

Let us live like humans and not like animals... of course if a animal lives like a human it must be called as a human and vice-versa.
Being gay is just an anomaly of nature... we are so conformed to norms that our perception towards them is negative...
This is not a western inflicted disease - even in times of Mahabharata, there was Shikandi... But unlike modern perception, all men were treated with respect due to them...
We should learn more about our ancient culture... not the translated texts by atheists and propagators of other religion...!
After twelve years in exile, Pandavas had to live one year in diguise (incognito). They decided to spend this one year in disguise in the court of King Viraata (Viraata parva of Mahabharatha).
Arjuna chose to live the life of a "half man" called Brihannala, due to a curse from Urvasi of Indra Loka.
Arjuna lived the life of a "feminine man" for a year.
Brihannala and Shikhandi may not have been "gay", but their characters in Mahabharatha, which was several thousands of years old, show that ancient Indian culture was liberal and tolerant of multiple forms of sexuality.
Ajanta and Ellora also depict erotic art, including gay art.
India became "conservative" after Muslims and Christians started plundering our country and culture.
Ancient India was the most liberal in sexuality.
Draupadi had five husbands. It was unusual, but the society was liberal and broad-minded and accepted everything, without frowning upon anything.

If you read the vedas and Upanishads you will not find them, Mahabaratha is only a story and not history. Though Homosexuality is found in all parts of the world even before 3000 years that does not mean you have to follow.
Do you follow the sudhra system, un-touchability and Sati which are also ancient in nature and part of the Hindu culture?

Ajanta and Ellora have many erotic statues. Some of them depict gay sex.
Due to a curse, Arjuna in Mahabharatha lives like a "feminine man" for a year during the "ajnaatha vaasa". He may not have been "gay", but at least "half men" are not new to Indian culture.
Similarly, "Shikhandi" who killed Bhishma in Mahabharatha is a woman born as a man. He too is considered to be a "half-man", though he may not be "gay".
Ancient Indian culture in the past has been open to all forms of sexuality and is the most liberal culture that ever lived on this planet.
This "conservative" culture that we see in today's India was not there in the past, before Muslims and Christians came into this country.

Deeraj, It seems you are sick of Mahabharatha, don't you have any thing to say in fact than fiction?
What do you mean by saying ancient Indian culture? The ancient Indian who lived in this land before 2500 years are the Scheduled Tribes; not aryans like you and me.
Your ancient culture taught untouchability, sati etc? look back on history and learn lessons from it, take the good and leave behind the bad.

Mahabharatha is not fiction. It is based on facts. So, too is Ramayana. Both of them have fiction, but they are not entirely fiction. They are based on facts. They are called "itihaasa", meaning history.
Both of them date back to more than 5000 years. They were not "scheduled tribes" as you say.
You said we are "aryans". The Aryan-Dravidian theory is pure trash. It is a theory propounded by Britishers and Western historians to keep India divided. It is part of their divide and rule policy.
Our ancient culture did not teach untouchability and sati. These derogatory practices have came up in the recent history (less than 1000 years).
When Muslims invaded India, the Rajput wives burnt themselves to escape from the Muslim rulers. That is how sati became a common practice. Prior to that, women did not practise sati.

It seems you are bitten by the Hindutva snake... corrupting and fictional history.
What do you mean by partly fictional? Where is the Ravanas 10 heads? where are the bones of Asuras? (we have the remains of dinasaurs etc. dates back to millions of years) Who gave birth to 100 children with her blood? Which monkey flew in the air for 100 miles? Where is the uprooted mountain?
Don't you have any good books to read and learn from?

It was not that women practiced Sati. They are forced to Sati... Read the history throughly, no coverups.
