Charity Destroys, Work Builds' was the mantra of the last of India's great social activists, Baba Amte.
And see what the other M. of Charity do...
They do Charity, make the reciever feel guilty and helpless and convert him.
They make him feel little and that they are the ones to follow.

Reeks of hypocrisy

baba amte towers above other social workers. he was a genuine person. this is shown by the fact that while he worked quietly, his followers like arundhati roy and medha patekar to some extent have thrived on publicity. baba amte's departure is a huge loss to our country, may his soul rest in peace

A Genuine Social Workers Departs
by Komal Raut on Feb 09, 2008 01:25 PM  Permalink

I was one of the lucky few who have met Baba last year. He couldn't talk much as he was not keeping well and bed ridden. I could meet him only for 5 mins. But what a personality. Those 5mins let out so much of positive energy. I also went to see Anandwan and you just have to be there to believe that someone as great as Baba can only create that magic. The hospitals, schools, workshops and so many other things. Also Hemalkasa is like a magical place in the midst of thick forest. Hats off to Baba's son Mr.Prakash Amte for following Baba's footsteps and adhering to his principles. We should just to share our condolences but try to imbibe some of his values in us and try and make at least some difference to the society. Baba's loss cannot be replaced by anyone. It was a honour to have had someone like Baba Amte in this country. He will always be remembered and missed by many.

by anna on Feb 09, 2008 01:25 PM  Permalink

Baba Amte and dalai Lama has great respect for eachother..and were great friends.
i guess Baba Amte was one of those great Boddhisattva who comes to this world from time to time to serve the sentient beings.
Its huge loss to our country in particular and humanities in general.
And Dalai lama must be missing this great friend of his.

Mother Teresa was Christian Missionary

who used to tell poor people suffering from diseases, that god is Great, he will cure you.

And if she herself got cough/cold or simple viral flu, she used to run abroad to get best medical treatments

On the other hand Baba Aamte was simple local country fellow, who just offered to to get injected with leprosy virus for further experiments. I t is rumored that he himself got the disease twice while on treating leprosy patients

No doubt our International Mother Teressa was great than local Baba Aamte

why the wrong thing to compare the two. why not to keep in mind his services to the huminity. he too was a man sent by Almighty for the service to the people. it is not easy for anybody in this world to disown his wealth and serve the poor. let us learn something from the great soul and also do something for the man kind and then only anybody shall be able to appreciate Baba's contribution to this otherwise materilistic world. i have always respected his being and i bow my head to the departed soul. such beings are send by God and after leaving this world, live with Him. regards from hari r.garg

Please dont be so upset and provocative. How you can expect all human being are good persons. there are some like sood and raj. when we can understand why they both are talking in such a low calibre tone. we should ignore and shun them. Baba Amte was great and it is a truth which can not be changed by such pitty .....

poors were not converted to christianity. and if she was not there then narrow minded people like you would have isolated them and let them die on streets. if they chose christianity, its bcoz we hindu could not interpret our religion properly and tries to outcast them instead of helping them. fault lies with us and not Mother Teresa, if these lepers converted to christianiy

how come then there are dalit christians.
how come there is untouchability in christianity?
how is it there are different churches, prayer sessions etc for different types of people?
dont blame hindus... blame the politicians....
northeast is 90% christian.. then why is there so much poverty, drug abuse, aids, voilence? going by your logic it surely has something to do with the flaws in christianity....

My homage to Baba
by Tushar Kulkarni on Feb 09, 2008 01:08 PM  Permalink

May his soul rest in peace!!

He is lived by his two sons and wife. This was one of the greatest gift he gave to India. I am sure these two living legends from his family will take his movement ahead and keep inspiring the world in the same way Baba Amte did.

Hats off the Revered Saint Baba Amte.

Mahatma Gandhi was recommended thrice for Nobel Peace Prize and twice it was rejected due to pressure from British Govt. and third time he was recommended after his death and Nobel Prizes are given only to living people and not posthumously so his nomination was rejected.
The Indian govt never did anything to recommend a personality like Baba Amte for the award though he was the most deserving person for that (at least as compared to the many politicians who have received Nobel Peace Prize though they were no less than terrorists in real life). A few days back was discussing this point only with my colleagues that if there is anybody who should get Nobel Peace Prize it is Baba Amte. And now after the demise of Baba Amte Nobel Peace Prize can not be given to him (same reason - it can not be given posthumously).
Anyway great souls like Baba Amte don't need a peace prize to prove their work and deeds.
and the other important point is should we really have a Peace Prize in the name of a person (ALFRED NOBLE) who invented none other than "DYNAMITE" which by no means is a thing for peace, yeah science etc. is okay but "Peace Prize" ?????
THINK IT OVER

Forget Nobel Prize, why could the numerous Indian Govts not honour him as a "BHARAT RATNA". Is his opposition to the Sardar Sarovar the reason or his being a true secular person.

I am one among the lucky persons who have talked to Mr Baba Amte.I have seen his Anandwan garden, workshop. Food, shelter and care for needy personnel was his motto. The green garden with colourful roses(roses of all colours), paddy field, the Art and graphics work (till now I have never seen such a beautiful greeting card.
Even his son Dr Amte is also never failed to serve to the poor. The hospital for the poor including the leprosy patents.
I salute their dedication and service to the nation. Nation has lost another true Gandhi. I pray the almighty for his soul rest in peace.
