As a youngster in the 50s and 60s, grew up with the inspiration and motivation of this great soul. Its a pity that most of today's generation are not even aware of him, thanks to the media shy activities that he undertook. A great way to continue with his ideals will be to include a chapter on him and his movement in the social studies in schools. My condolences to his sons, and may they get the strength from him to go ahead.
22 years back I met him in Rampur District of Jammu where he was undertaking cycle procession. Very very simple, loveable and great human being. Devoted his life for social upliftment irrespective of caste religion and sect. Let his soul rest in peace.

Lepers who are socially outcast do not go to the Anandvan with regional or cast tag on their head. It is ultimate insult to the departed soul by branding his service to the Marathi cause than for human cause.

You know one thing very unique of Maharashtrians.
In the recent polls of Gujrat, we never heard of slogans like Jai Gujrat etc, rather the slogans like Bharat mata ki jai was very common, whereas in Maharashtra, Bharat is never uttered, rather its only Jai Maharashtra. See all the regional parties in Maharashtra. And you bloody fools call Gujratis anti national.

Dear Ajay Gupta, pl leave aside the regionalism atleast on discussion boards like this. In India we have multiple identities (Language is just one of them)! Every one is proud of his mother tongue. Do you remember the anti-Hindi agitation in Tamil Nadu? The Congress Party has not the State ever since!!!!!! So don't try to inflame passions!

Ajay Gupta , You are as idiot as Amarsingh. Even Balasaheb Thackrey while concluding his speech says Jai Hind! Jai Maharashtra. It is short sighted idiots like you who spread the fire of regionalism.

Dear murthy, to the best of my knowledge there is not award called "Maharashtra Ratna award" A person like Baba Amte lives in the hearts of millions and is above such awards!
Of course it is very sad that the Govt of India did not confer Bharat Rata on him while he was alive.
Rediff write only few lines on Baba Amte. Is he did only this much. Rediff use several pages on tamil actrsses obscenity few days before and write several lines on useless news of filmstars and mubai gossips but for the legend like baba Amter rediff has no space. This means that rediff give preference to useless gossips.

Baba Amte - Eeshwar aplya atmyas shanti devo hi tyache charani prarthana. How one can say:" This is the country we live in, where doing good to others has no value!" Think what we r writing & that too whats the topic!! Don't be cynic;Be positive,Practice some of his activities, For most of us here i think he's much above 'Bharat-Ratna'. Publicise good thoughts & actions and ignore the negative side. This will help us and the country as whole. Hope most of the people will agree this....
It seems ignorance on the part of Rediff not to attach the pic of great personality with the news. Even though he will remain in the hearts of all the Maharastrains. We all fold our hands and pray God to bless this Great Soul.

Why do you want to appropriate a great humanbeing like Baba Amte for only Maharashtra? He worked tirelessly for the upliftment of the downtrodden and I am sure he might not have shown any special favour to anybody just because he was a Maharashtrian! Pl don't denegretate him with such narrow mindedness.
