by shivangshu naval on Feb 10, 2008 11:20 AM  Permalink

he was truly one of the greatest souls to have walked the earth...
his selfless and endless devotion towards so many downtrodden and sick people and d ways and humble means which he used in his struggle put him right up there in the constellation with d other great souls...

Baba About Narmada
by roopesh raghavan on Feb 10, 2008 11:18 AM  Permalink

Will we be able to blaze a divine halo around her that no power on earth can defile ? Or will her cries never be heard again? Will we bequeath to her only tombstones with a sad tale to tell?

by Sheetal Bhardwaj on Feb 10, 2008 10:24 AM  Permalink

I was very small kid when I read about him in my NCERT school book. I was so much fascinated by him that time, not only bcoz he is a great person and a social worker but also because we share the same birth date i.e. 26th December. During school days that were a Kid feelings that someone share my birthday and I use to overjoyed it.

Now stay in Dubai and when today in the morning I checked rediff, read about this sad news...I just got a feeling that we have really lost a great individual and a kind soul. May you rest in peace Baba, I will miss you.

Baba Amte
by Ajay Nioding on Feb 10, 2008 10:20 AM  Permalink

It is very shocking News for us. It was great solace just with a feeling that Baba is in Anandawan. All the words fall short to describe his Greatness. We, far away in Laos feel more lonely. We join Prakash,Vikas and all the Family
in praying for the Eternal Peace to the Departed Great Soul.

May his sour rest in peace

Baba Amteji is a legendary figure in social service and concern for the underderprivileged.Anandwan is the first of the three ashrams started by Baba Amte to treat and rehabilitate people suffering from leprosy. Baba Amte after taking a leprosy orientation course at the Calcutta School of Tropical Medicine, started his fight against leprosy. He used to set up about 11 weekly clinics around Warora. Later taking his work to next level and help rehabilitate the patients he started Anandwan. Anandwan was registered in 1951 and recieved a a state land grant of 250 acres. In those days leprosy was associated with social stigma in those days and patients were disowned by the society. It was then belived that leprosy patients were sinners paying for their sins they had done. There was also a widespread fear that leprosy was contagious and can spread by touch. Baba Amte commitment against fighting leprosy can be known from the incident when he allowed bacilli from a leprosy patient to be injected into him while participating in a an experiemental test.Baba Amte also started Somnath and Ashokvan ashrams for treating leprosy patients. .Today Anandwan has two hospitals, a university, an orphanage and also a school for the blind. The self sufficient unit ashram has more than 5,000 people are dependent on it.He belongs to the company of great people like Mahatma Gandhi,Vinoba Bhave etc.,

Ajith Balakrishnan, what a pity!
by Ramesh Nair on Feb 10, 2008 07:41 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Baba Amte passed away at 4.15 AM. Rediff, which claims to be the country's finest News site, reports about the death at 9.48 AM - a good 5.5 hours late! And the report (if you can call it so!) is a hurriedly done 5 sentence formality. You guys report a fall of a wicket within seconds and about the death of one of the country's most persons so irresponsibly.

As a regular visitor, seriously something is going terribly wrong at Rediff. Shame on you guys.

It's not about what I would've done if I heard the news earlier. It's about the priorities News portal maintain these days. Isn't it pity that a news on an item dancer like Rakhi Sawant can get more news space than a legend like Baba Amte?
