I hope the government has a little reality setting on what they bought, But in coolie raj seld degradation is the only way to go.

You people love junk. There is old car it pollutes alot, most noraml people say no scrap it instead paying more then building/buying a new one. The indian government goes gaga, we will get some kickbacks. It is from America it must be gold, but with lots of leaks a classic. Blaming safety measures wont help, because it is a disaster in the waiting. We have the capability of building better ships ourselves, why don't we do it instead of buying junk, fit for the scrap yards.

Engines probably 40 years old, producing excessive pollution and venting it from some old leaking pipes.

My opinion it needs serviceing, refitting, upgarding this vessal, and it will cost the government of India lots of money to make it seaworthy, almost the same amount for a new one.

SCRAP THE JUNK AQND BUILD A NEW ONE COOLIE RAJ

Why were they not wearing Gas masks if they went to repair poisonous gas. Nobody cares for lives of low level defence personnel. I am sure the whole issue will be buried under the carpet. After all there are so many poor guys to die for.

You fool, anyone wears gas mask on a Navel ship.

It is junk get it through your thick head, It belongs in the scrap yard, not out in sea.

By god these Coolie number ones, if it is American we should invent a new procedure and wear gas mask on ship , because it caNT BE THE FAULT OF THE SHIP IT JUST HAPPENS TO BE FORTY YEARS OLD OUTDATED JUNK.

PLEASE.The government should be held accountable for spending money for an outdated vessal that is not sea worthy.

Unfortunate
by KRISHNENDU SENGUPTA on Feb 02, 2008 02:22 PM  Permalink

Tribute to the brave navy personnel and condolence to their families. It is most unfortunate that this has to happen but the bigger question is WHY? The only explanation to the whole episode is the lack of proper training and also lack of proper safety measures. In Merchant Navy, when ever we undergo any operation (critical or routine) we have to fill up a checklist and one of the points is the checking of atmosphere esp. when the work is in an enclosed enviornment. Does Navy follow all these precautions and if they do then how this happens?

Unfortunate Tragedy
by bharat on Feb 02, 2008 01:54 PM  Permalink

I believe the sailors entered one of the ship's tanks without proper ventilation. This is a very common cause of death of repair/maintenance workers on merchant vessels, however, this to happen on a Navy ship is very sad indeed. This incident points at improper safety training to the sailors and improper supervision at work.

Navy should carry out a thorough investigation into this matter and review their safety procedures.

MADE IS USA
by greet gunn on Feb 02, 2008 01:23 PM  Permalink

Why did india in first place go and buy a ship that was being decomissioned by the usa
Dosent india have to money to buy a new war ship then to go and buy a third rated ship from usa.
There is something wrong goin on in the defence department. corruption , birbe which has lead to this deal and now 5 humans have paid with their lifes and god knows how many of their dependent people have to live with this trauma.
IN INDIA WHEN A INDIAN SOLDIER DIES THE PUBLIC DOSENT CARE AND ALSO THE MEDIA
BUT WHEN AN AMERICAN OR WESTERN SOLDIER IS KILLED THE WHOLE OF MEDIA GOES BEZERK AND ALSO THE PUBLIC EVEN TO THE EXTENT THE HEAD OF STATES OF THEIR RESPECTIVE COUNTRY HAVE TO ISSUE A STATEMENT AS TO REASON OF DEATH AND JUSTIFY.. BUT HERE OUR PUBLIC IS SO DUMB AND INSANE AND DOES NOT CARE ..
Even parties who claim to be guardians of india the hinduvta parites dont care and bother to raise issues or sympathise with dead soldiers..
shame on us
