Drivel passed off as 'popular'
by sibby mathews on Aug 23, 2008 09:33 PM  Permalink

Movies generally reflect the tastes and the level of intellect of their audiences. By this measure, often it is only the Malayali and Bengali audiences in India that pass muster in terms of appreciation of cinematic skills, level of understanding of the visual art, understanding what is 'good cinema', appreciation of good humour (though cinema of low quality do get made in these two languages also)......

The substantial lag in these matters that the remaining language groups suffer from are demonstrably reflected in the extent of drivel that is made, hyped and bandied about as 'popular cinema'. 'Bollywood', 'Kollywood', 'Hyderawood' and so on are conspicuous examples........

How to save our beautiful scripts & languages?
by Ram Sharma on Aug 23, 2008 10:11 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

U R Ananthamurthy is right. U get more publicity & money if u write in English. But writing in yr mother tongue gives best results. Due to stranghold of English medium schools during last 35 yrs in cities and towns (now spreading to villages also), we hv already raised one generation, which did not enjoy the fruits of learning in mother tongue. They probably also look down upon their mother tongues.

For learning English, the medium of instruction is not required to b English. But unfortunately, that is what is happening in our country, killing our beautiful phonetic scripts and languages. Secondly having given over emphasis on English for office works has also gone against our own languages. As per UN study report, only Hindi & Bengali of all Indian languages will overcome the onslaught of English in the country.

It is time we forget our differences and try to develop two common scripts, one for south and one for the other parts of the country followed by two common languages.

We should also encourage use of our own languages in the official works, banking, courts, etc, so that people not knowing good English can also get job. Secondly English medium schools should b banned by a constitutional amendment, bcz earlier one such attempt in TN failed in the court. However English must b taught as a compulsory subject due to its international importance, say from class III onwards. I started learning English in class VI only.

Ayurveda in USA

is fast becoming a big business. But this puts positive light on Hinduism and India, which is great. Allopathic medicines have draw backs, and Ayurveda is certainly a much sought-after specialty.

RTI Commissioners must have judicial experience
by Miharika on Aug 22, 2008 08:24 PM  Permalink

The basic flaw in the RTI Act is that the Commissioners are former bureaucrats who have little or no judicial training, and hence are not fit to decide matters under the RTI Act. This is evident in several decisions of the various Information Commissioners both at the Centre and at State levels. Just as the head of the Consumer Forum is a district level judge and the Lok Ayukta is a retired High Court judge, at least the Chief Information Commissioner of both Centre and State ought to be a sitting or retired judge. The second problem is that First Appellate Authorities routinely uphold illegal refusals to provide information by the PIOs. By the time the Second Appeal is decided, a long time goes by in which time the matter may well become infructuous, as presumably the Applicant seeks the information for some important instant purpose. Penalties must be levied stringently against all errant PIOs, FAAs and even when warranted against the ICs.

The above sounds like an ode to a gangster who is establishing his supremacy, certainly nothing spiritual.

deepak, Good post, I agree.
Rediff keeps removing my post on so-called idol worship. I do not say anything to offend any religion - I only explain the Hindu point of view on that issue.
But they keep the main message from "knowthetruth". Strange.
The Mid-east religion's objections to "idol worship" has to do with their local politics at the time of their Prophets.

charisma
by S Das on Aug 22, 2008 05:56 AM  Permalink

he is the most charismatic person from tinsel town. he still looks great, brilliant personality, polished, well-dressed, modest and writes very well as well (his blog is an interesting read!). but his choice of movies (from his stardom in the late 70's) are purely commercial in aspect, very little of his talent has been put to use. he can sleep through a movie and make it a hit. before he retires (will he ever) he should make one last film for purely artistic purposes alone to show india his range and what he was capable of.

There are serials which are more intersting. People get hooked on to it. I dont think people go the theaters these days like in 60s and 70s.For that matter even Hollywood sucks these days. We have much better Sit coms and talk shows.

Objection on this:
by sri on Aug 21, 2008 09:28 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

It is completely wrong. There are so many regional movies that are better than bollywood. They hidding Indian Cinema. They making Hindi moves only as Indian Cinema. But it is completly wrong. Pls medias also don't give engragement to this activity. Like malyalam, Tamil, Bengali & Oria movies are only showing the real things. Hindi movies are real things.

Media can not do without bollywood. Look at the head lines . Most of it is about Bollywood stars. They think people really love this stuff. The truth is they dont care. I was surprised that lot of people in India have not watched Jodha Akbar.
