Good work!
by Sayyad on Aug 10, 2008 08:25 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

My heart goes out for the families of the deceased.

Govt should take stern actions to avoid this kind of situation.

Excellent way of showing sympathy and feeling the trouble people have been facing.

Good to see the MP is standing in the waist high water instead of doing a visual inspection from a helicopter as our usual politicians do.

He had visited that area too, but the reporters were not there, all the media are waiting in a safe place and collecting news.

How about planning in such a way that these pictures don't become every year affair...Remember Climates are changing and it would be wise to plan for the future.....

Really? Apart from dismantling the settlements along the Musi which are encroachments upon the oroginal storm sewer plans, what else can be done to prevent this from being a yearly event?

Raju, before making suggestions, you should take a closer look at the history of Hyderabad. Read upon the post 1904 flood storm sewer construction plans. It'll give you the precise reason for the tragedy.

Hyderabad was prepared for worse rains than these.

AP govt lacked long range plan
by mallaiah anchoori on Aug 09, 2008 11:46 PM  Permalink

This is the first time that death toll has been more in the capital City of Hyderabad, compared to other place-especially coastal places which used to be the worst hit by floods etc at time of incessant rains like this. This clearly shows the abject lack of proper drainage facilities to flush out the rain water in the city.Despite manifold increase in city's population due to migration from all the cities and settlers from other states too,the civic authorities have not taken any measures, whatsoever, to improve the sewerage system which was laid almost a century back by the Nizam. No successive govt has taken initiative to improve the civic life of the people of the city although some thing good was done to widen the roads during TDP time which, of course, cannot take the credit of well utilisation of all the funds borrowed from world bank, since it too, like any other govt interested in bettering the lives of contractors of interested category, spent unwarrantedly colossal amounts on fly over which are not all needed for the city at this juncture.Instead of alerting & evacuating the low lying areas in the vicinity of Hussain Sagar, the surroundings of which,of late, have also been converted into places of high rise residential complexes,Govt should not have permitted constructions around Hussain Sagar. There was no long range plan to protect the growing city from all such calamities. It is time at least, now, for the Govt to preserve the serenity in and around the prestigious lake.

We should connect all the rivers of India.
by Ganesh P on Aug 09, 2008 10:36 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

When one place is affected by heavy rain fall, another place doesnt get enough water for its crops.

We should come with a new water projects connecting all the rivers of India. This will make things better

As a first step, instead of thinking big, Every state should identify and draw up plans to link all the rivers and streams within the state. This way the project will not get struck with agitations and spat between states. Even this one act will save the country from water crisis.

Sir,you are right on a large scale, but if we can harvest the rain water by not letting the rain water go into the gutter(naala)then we will not face a draught situation which is expected in the comming days.

we have heavy rains followed by famine....

Note:Society is not destroyed by bad people it is destroyed by inactive good people.

Rains
by Ramu on Aug 09, 2008 10:19 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

This is the problem. When there was no rain, everyone was worried there was no rain.
When there's rain, everyone's worried now there is heavy rain.
The problem is we dont try to find any permanent , practical solutions to our problems.
When there is a problem, we panic and suffer. We dont make any attempt to solve it permanently.
After a few days, everything will be forgotten.
Come next year, this will happen again. There will be either drought due to lack of rainfall or floods. The streets will be flooded again, houses will collapse and people will panic and suffer. Nothing will be solved.
At least till we find permanent solutions instead of worrying for the time being and forgetting later. This is the case for most things in India.
Everyone's whining now that we havent won a medal in Olympics. After the event is over, everything will be forgotten.
Same with terror attacks, train accidents and pretty much everything else in India.
