We need brilliant officers to win a war. Quality matters above quantity. Therefore we need to make sure that we pay the best packages to the officers / soldiers to attaract the best talent. Our political leadership must take a serious view on this aspect. Double digit economic growth can obly be achieved when the borders are well protected and we have good men to protect the country.

A General's letter in anguish to the PM

The real threat to our country is not from China or Pakistan, but from our own Politicians and IAS fellows.History is witness to it.

No parity
by softouch on Apr 28, 2008 09:55 AM  Permalink

The forces doing active duty and putting their life on the line do not deserve only parity, they deserve to be paid BETTER than other services.

A General's Anguish
by VINAYANANDA on Apr 28, 2008 09:52 AM  Permalink

Not only a General's anguish, but any person with commonsense & a sense of justice will realise the great need to improve life for our defence personnel.
For those who are entrusted with the job of safeguarding a nation's security, and who give up the comforts of life most Indians live, it is the duty of the national government to provide these personnel a security in their life. It is one thing to shower praise on a soldier's sacrifice or to raise money for them in the wake of a war,and to ceremonially salute the martyrs, and this is good. But it is more important to genuinely respect and honour them during their lifetime, to look after their welfare, and pay them well -- which they certainly deserve just as other citizens of India do. We often hear of the less than satisfactory conditions in which our soldiers work, survive when in-service and when out of service.

It is hoped that compassion and a sense of justice prevails.

What an Irony !
by softouch on Apr 28, 2008 09:52 AM  Permalink

It is a tragedy that brave soldiers are neglected while Rs. 60,000/- crores are indiscriminately squandered on loan defaulters, many of them underserving. Just to win an election. Shame on this government.

General Vij's letter to the PM
by Vinaya Das on Apr 28, 2008 09:46 AM  Permalink

This is the first time in the history of independent India and more than 200 years of history of the Indian Army that a retired Chief had to write to the PM about the gross injustice done by the pay commission at the connivance of the corrupt and inefficient IAS clique. It is pathetic that a former judge of the Supreme Court put his signatures to the report prepared for him by the IAS officers attached to the Commission. He has brought the judiciary also in disrepute and the people's faith in their sense of justice and fair play has been badly shaken. Let us hope justice is done to our soldiers, sailors and airmen and they can keep on working with their traditional dedication and discipline so that we can continue to live in freedom and security.
History is replete with examples of how for centuries we were subjugated and ruled by foreigners because we did not have a united and strong army. Now that we have one that was gifted to us by the British when they left, let us not destroy it but save it from the IAS clique and the indifference of the politicians which is evident from the fact that the defence debate took place in the Lok Sabha after a gap of ten years and even that was thinly attended by every party. We cannot trust the politicians, only peoples'voice in support of our defence personnel will save our country from the enemies within while soldiers save us from the enemy outside our borders.

IT and pay
by rgopi on Apr 28, 2008 09:44 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

The colonel of an army has vast levels of responsibility from planning the troops, to facing the fire, to umpteen things that an average civilian cannot even concieve. In addition they need to be phsyically fit. They get their ranks during their middle ages, the pay is close to 17 k plus perks. They serve under unimaginable physical adversities

A graduate, pseudo intellectual IT proffesional (what an oxymoron) is paid a salary of 30 k by 21 years all he needs to do is a mundane meagre work. These guys have increased the real estates prices and inflation to sickening heights and govt staff like the army officers cannot survive the impact outside the army once they are retired.

I am sure my message will be contradicted by one of those stupid software coders, proffesionals, testers etc who have contributed nothing to the country except stupidity, pseudointellectualism, inflation, and declining morals with the rise of free money. The govt doles out concessions to Narayanamurthy, and premji inreturn for kickbacks and cannot even take care of its own defense personnel who are truly proffessional.

How about a compulsory military service like in other countries for our politicians, software guys and industrialists

How come u r so jealous of IT salary. I accpet that we get salary of 30 K compared to 17k a jawan gets, but look at the priveleage he gets, free house, sunsidized food, subsidized stuff from military canteen, tavel back home free of cost, and many more like this and what we get, apart from salary, rest everything we buy, nothing comes as subsidy. Even a gas cylinder that we use here is a private gas connection that comes with 650/- per 12 KG. Think about this boss, before u compare to IT salary from other salaried person. It's not worth cpmparing at all. We work for minimum 10 hours a day in a normal day unlike other govermnet servant.I have tremendous respect for armed force but i will suggest don't compare like this. First do a thorough home work before comparing...

The reason
by cynic on Apr 28, 2008 09:41 AM  Permalink

why army guys are not paid enough is because of the massive lazy bureacracy and all those state run companies(most of which are loss-making)that we have. These bureaucrats only absorb money but they produce no tangible output that benefits the nation. Cut bureaucracy by 60%, dissolve all loss making PSUs and of the remaining profit making PSUs sell more stake to Indian Public and raise money. Let the government worry about governing the country rather than running all those companies. Automatically we will able to pay more to deserving people like Army folks.
