OTHERWISE, IT WOULD HAVE GOT DELAYED LIKE ANY OTHER EVEN SMALL COMPOUND WALL, UNDER GOVT CONTRACT, IN ANY CITY. PROBABLY MILITANTS ARE IMPORTANT, ALL OVER INDIA, WHERE LARGE SCALE GOVT PROJECTS ARE IN PROGRESS, WITH MASSIVE INVESTMENTS. CONTRACTORS & MINISTERS WOULD NOT DARE TO THINK OF DELAYS & COST OVER RUNS ETC. OF COURSE, OUR POLITICIANS & CONTRACTORS ARE BIGGEST MILITANTS RUNNING PARALLEL MILITANT ACTIVITIES, ALONGWITH ISLAMIC & MAOISTS.

Om parkash there is no need to be abusive it is a simple question so answer it accordingly or stay silent.
dont know when it will collapse. Corrupt Indian politicians, contractors and others would have built nice homes for themselves from the money for the bridge
Looking at the slide three it shows that the protection of the traffic is by rails which do not look very strong (to me any way). At 12 meters it is not wide enough to take single lane duel traffic and a disaster will happen sooner or latter with careless driving (which is norm in India). If a bus or car has to drop of the bridge(god bless and it does not happen) there will be no chance for survivors especially if the river is swollen.
So this is the great achievement of India, a bridge that took 31 years and 23 crores to build. Nothing special there are plenty and bigger bridges like this in the world. And at 31 years and 23 crores it is no achivment.

Try to read the first slide again..... its clearly written the bridge was completed in 22 months and 23cr. is a reasonable amount for such a complex construction.... Congrats!!

I don't think you read the main article that was posted earlier. it said the bridge took 31 yeasr the initial cost during the conception of the idea was 77 lakh and tit soared to 23 crore. BRO took over the build of the bridge and completed it in 20 months. Work started on the bridge in 1977.

it should be understood that it took the government 31 years to decide on the bridge and it got completed in 22 months at a cost of 23 crores. Let us not waste our precious time in arguing. Try to appreciate the achievements of our Jawans who have been performing in silence for the country.

We are not bl;aming the Jawans if you had read all the postings before the you would have seen that every one congratulated the jawans. but it is the governments msgivings we are after. why did the government took so long. Kawan and BRO is not to blame it is the government wasting public money that could have been used say to build a hospital or schools OR may be improve the road conditions somewhere.

Thirty-one years after its first foundation stone was laid, the country's first pylon to pylon bridge connecting Srinagar [Images] with bordering districts of Rajouri and Poonch will be opened for traffic by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh [Images] on Friday.
The 280-meter-long bridge supported by steel pillars is the longest one in the state.
"The country's first PTP bridge will be inaugurated by the prime minister on April 25 and it will connect Rajouri and Poonch districts with Srinagar," official sources told PTI in Jammu.
It took 31 long years for a concrete bridge to come up across the Chenab and will replace the existing steel-girder span.
What was envisioned to be done at a cost or Rs 77 lakh in 1977 was finally accomplished this year at a cost of Rs 23 crore.
The then chief minister Sheikh Mohmmad Abdullah had laid the foundation stone of this bridge on April 7, 1977.
In 1984, another foundation stone was laid for the construction of the bridge by a Central minister.
The construction of the bridge, which is the longest pre-stressed concrete span among all bridges in the country, was sanctioned in May 1977 at a cost of Rs 77 lakh by Border Road Organisation, an official said, adding the contract for construction was awarded to NBCC limited and work commenced in 1978.

BRO claims that it is the shortest period in which a bridge has been completed across the country.
The bridge would be an alternative to the existing steel-girder bridge, which is in constant need of repairs.
The old bridge was considerably damaged by unprecedented floods in 1992, BRO sources said, adding another bridge was constructed by the northern railway in April 1993.
However, over a period of time, certain defects were noticed in the vital bridge and as a precautionary measure, the bridge was closed for vehicular traffic for two hours daily for maintenance work, they said.
An expert committee was formed during August 1995, which suggested in March 1997 that the bridge be constructed without midstream piers.
The overall width of the bridge is 12 m and it has been constructed using segmental construction technique and is supported with bearings.
It has four shock transmission units imported from France [Images] to withstand earthquakes.
