Government should distribute 20 kg rice or wheat at Rs 2 per kg per ration card through Public Distribution System
by usa on Apr 17, 2008 08:18 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

1. Will have a 'cascading' effect on remaining food items and will help in reducing the prices and inflation.
2. Will create 'demand' for agricultural products and will 'prevent' farmers suicide.
3. Will prevent 350 million Indians 'starving' every day for a 2nd meal.

Dear Friend,

As per your suggestion: "2. Will create 'demand' for agricultural products and will 'prevent' farmers suicide."

Demand alone will not help farmers but need of the hour is good support prie. Government wants to give only very low price to farmers so that they can give chearp price in PDS. So, farmers are getting affected and there is no incentive for them to grow more.

On the other hand, Government is ready to pay MORE for imports of Rice & Wheat from other countries, which make me ridiculously curios to know what the hell is happening?

We need good Minimum Support Price for farmers, move away from heavy fertlizer used farming to organic farming and Govt providing incentives for those who go that way and finally make cheap wheat & rice available in PDS.

We can't take it away from Harry and give it to Laury. We have to think of everyone together!

Jai Kissan!

This govt is a mess

Now the UPA can blame the common man by saying that we made the GDP go up and the buying power went up so the people who are expected to eat one meal a day can now afford two. So now its the people who ar ehte problem. These guys in the UPA have no forward thinking just beyond their nose is fine as far as Madam is ok, rest of them can go to hell. We should be paying our farmers more first avoiding the sucides that too when we are actually paying more for imports. What are these made off. Do they fear that once the price goes up then in a country like India it cant be brought down. Then sit with the farmers and tell them that this a two way street.

The Food Shortage
by ravi prakash on Apr 17, 2008 07:41 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

The essay paints a grim story. There is only one way that poor governance leads to and this is widespread hunger. The essay brings this out sharply.
At one time we used to say that whatever may happen to the world at large, India grows its own food and so will survive any calamity. Not any longer. India can no longer support its own population as far as food is concerned. In our collective folly, we are using our fertile soil to build SEZs, posh 7 star Hotels, and all the glamour industries instead of food
Land sharks and builders now talk of land bank account to provide housing and 7star amenities to a rich and wealthy Indians and NRIs.
Somewhere something is going wrong for all of us,our politicians, our planners, our bureaucrats and the media, all know it. But, it seems that every one of these sections has decided, nothing can be done- the sheer magnitude of the problem is daunting. We do even want to make a beginning but allow things to drift; reconciled to a kind of fatalism that is apalling in these times.
The terrible waste of food in PDS and the FCI warehouses is one area which can definitely be plugged but there is no will. The Govt has no will to lift the grain from farmer's stock and pay him a wholesome price for his grain.
We have a large army to defend our borders, surly we can create an " army" for providing the work force for tilling the soil and connecting our rivers.

could not agree more....there was time in late 70s and late 80s when the Indian AGRICULTURE STORY LOOKED GOOD AT LEAST IN TERMS OF FOOD SECURITY NOT ANYMORE.....just driving through punjab ine can smell rotting foodgrains under the leaking black plastic of FCI depots.....time has come to do do some real stuff and just not merely fixing MSP for paddy and wheat....I think the government is playing an OSTRICH at the moment...

The story of Indian agriculture is like a Rudderless boat which is just afloat becoz of the tireless indian farmer.....and whose patience is fats running out...with more and more land fragmetation, farming has is subsistance ocuupation.....Farmers are tempted to sell there land to real estate brokers and enjoy with easy money and fair enough..If agriculture is not able to fullfill there needs why should they be the one to suffer the money they get by seeling there lans is enough for than to lead a comaprtaively comfortable life as compared to toiling in the fields.Government on its part is running a lot a Ag research institutes which do good for nothing research on crops ranging from Apples to Zucchini just to publish research reports but are infact bogus....There is an urgent need to trim the research institutes spending and start some purposeful ,targeted, result oriented research with help of talented and dedicated team of scientists to help bring a second GREEN REVOLUTION..oter wise my brethern i can forsee the sinking of the rudderless boat...get prepared for American BASMATI and Autrallian Apples, Chinese pears and SRILANKAN TEA....

As yo go from Out of Delhi on G.T Karnal Road towards Panipat you will see may Colonies/builder flats etc have come up .3-4 years back they were all agriculture lands. These is bound to cause food shortage. We have to bulk incentives to Farmers so that they do not sell there land to these colonisers
"

EXACT SAME thing with Bangalore. Just 20 kms outside Bangalore all we used to see were vast green fields of paddy or sugarcane or something, in any direction. Now all we see are concrete flats and dust and pollution.

The land mafia convert this agricultural land, make them sites/layouts, and sell them at bloated prices to stupid public, especially those who come from the north and those who are NRIs. These people buy at no matter what rates, pushing up the prices artificially sky high.

Food security gayi bhaad mein. Who wants food? All they want is reservation and free jobs, high salaries sans the hardwork, firang way of life (what they THINK is firang), caste fights, religion fights, regional fights, putting down others, encouraging the gandi dynasty all the more, and keep exploding the population. Saale nikamme log.

Agriculture Minister has made it clear that foof prices are rising because of Information Technology.
It is time therefore, to discourage use of Information Technology.

Perhaps an explanation is necessary.
The minster has said that because of IT boom in South, more and more North Indians are going to south, and demanding chapatis.
Therefore Information Technology is directly responsible.
What can our Minister do?

1.South Indians are eating too many chappatis, which is why there is so much demand for wheat. So says the Union agriculture minister.
2.North Indians are eating too much rice, which is why there is so much demand for rice. So says the Union civil aviation minister.

3.The poor are eating two meals a day, rather than just one, which is why there is so much demand for food. So says the Union commerce minister. THESE THREE NEEDS TO BE HANGED
