Agricultural land
by Manjula A on Apr 18, 2008 10:58 AM  Permalink

Many agriculturists are selling their agricultural land to builders and conscienceless property dealers who are indiscriminately converting all the land to residential or commercial land. There are laws against giving permission to convert such land, but in the name of globalisation and in the name of abolishing red tapism, the tedious procedures are being bypassed by giving bribe to the elites in the Government. Soon, there will be no agricultural land or any agriculture left in this great country.

Food Security
by kskumar on Apr 18, 2008 10:58 AM  Permalink

The article hits the nail on its head. It is a pity that our Government is spending more time on quotas, minorities and nuclear deal than for the aam aadmi. It has threatened 'drastic action' against the steel and cement cartels, while doing nothing for ensuring food security.

Food is a serious business, much more serious than bringing in quotas and allocating funds exclusively for minorities etc. In the end, it is the food prices that will determine the destiny of our rulers and nothing else.

MSP
by Nitin Dutt on Apr 18, 2008 10:55 AM  Permalink

The problem is that govt always buys from teh farmer at MSP inthe name of protecting him but actually it is protecting the industries who buy from these farmers at much lwer rate then available in world market. A family of four working fpr eight months in fields make rs. 1800 after paying all expenses per month. That is way low they would earn by working as daily wages labors. This is causing influx of ppl to cities. the govt should buy at higher prices from farmers so that more and more ppl find agriculture and implementing new techniques attractive. Once agriculture becomes our main forte rather then IT or services. We will be solving lots of our problems. No muscle power or money power can match the food power. Experts have already predicted that future wars will be fought for water & food.

Three Conditions for a Country to be called 'Developed'
by A Singh on Apr 18, 2008 09:22 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

India wants the rest of the world to recognise it as a 'Developed' country. It is not happening. Experts in Economics and Management can say the same thing in a very sophisticated manner using a lot of jargon, but I can simply state that there are three conditions that must be met before any country lays any claims to respect from others.
1. FOOD SECURITY: The country must have enough reserves of foodgrains to be able to survive 4 to 5 famines and floods.
2. Monetary Security: The country must have enough resources to buy what it wants, without having to bow before IMF.
3. Latth Security: The country must have enough muscle power so that others do not get ideas about grabbing the land and resources of the country.
If any of the 3 is missing, nobody is going to respect us, simply because of our lofty principles.
We can get all 3 only if we take the lead in Technology. Instead of borrowing technology, we should develop our own technology to suit our premises. Nothing is going to be achieved by purchasing a costly reactor, and begging for Uranium.

Only Bimarus can help to others because of high yield and these states should adopt the good cultivation method for higher production. Rest of the regional states are busy in IT & Auto, SEZ. They are scolding to farming states by saying bimarus.

UP has major pie for wheat and rice and stood 5th in IT but stills known as Bimaru states. Beacsue Farmers can't match with IT salary. People should understand this and start innovation for agriculture.
