India is democracy....and NOT 'meritocracy' like Singapore or Taiwan.
by usa on Apr 14, 2008 05:49 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

India is democracy....and NOT 'meritocracy' like Singapore or Taiwan.

Hence it is imperative to appreciate 'cultural' aka 'caste' diversity in all temples in India.

Government of India should implement 'reservations' in all Indian temples as per the 'caste' census in India.

1. 52% of all temple staff including Pujaris/Priests should be from OBC communities.
2. 29% temple staff including Pujaris/Priests should be from Dalits and Tribals.
3. Remaining all temple staff including Pujaris/Priests should be from other castes.

by teh same logic alos reserve 52% to OBC , 29% dalits and remaining to other caste in death also.
For every 100 die in inida 52 people must be OBC, 29 must be dalits and rest from others. If any group doesnto meet this figures ther has to be compulsory killings in that community to make up to their quota. Let there be equality and "reservation" in every thing. Do you agree to this?

Great article!
by Siva N on Apr 14, 2008 01:02 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

It is wonderful article. But we should stop writing "prescriptions" for India from outside of India. Not to say he is not a well wisher of India. We need to be inside India and work to change to change the system. It seems like the "caste" system may never go away as it seems like "shared karma" or "species" or "division of labor" in a jungle etc. We need to find ways to let the castes interact productively and peacefully for the well being of the nation. Of course, we need to continue to heal the wounds caused by historical injustices committed by the various ancestors of ours. His observation on historical and social/cultural continuity is absolutely correct and a peaceful and productive "caste system" seems to have contributed to that one way or the other (in my opinion!).

We can't simply copy ideas from countries like USA or China that are pretty linear culturally.

Regards,
Siva

Dear Siva,
An indian understands India better, when he or she puts distance between him / her and India. In the confusing variety of views and abuse you get in India, with a variety of mixed-motives, often, out-right frauds, you are surrounded by in India, it is not easy to take an objective view.
I think it is the insight that counts, which we can evaluate, no matter where the author is living. More over, Sri Ram Kelkar, is not prescribing anything to any one. India is too big for any individual to "prescribe" anything. Sri Ram Kelkar is not claiming to be some "Ayatollah" issuing "prescriptions".

You will notice, NRIs, who have lived abroad for many years, will queue up spontaneously, will say, "thanks" and be generally polite in debates. Perhaps, when in India, some of them revert to "habits" of everyone else.

ambedkar simply cut n paste ctrl c and ctrl v of British law. pls dont bring caste here. Even if a brahmin had done i would have blamed the same thing. Why India should follow the UK practise, as if they can never be questioned?

UK does not have a constitution to ctrl C-> Ctrl V. Who gave you such information.

UK law is based on the magna carta. India constitution is surely based on that plus the american constitution plus local cultural law such as the HUF. I guess the cut and copy was done but not in a brainless manner as you suggest. Please do some reading...

The copy paste alleged is largely from the Government of India Act, 1935, enacted by the British Parliament for India. The bicameral, quasi federal parliamentary, collectively responsible system of Government almost copied therefrom. All the rest in indegeous.

Simply put my dear Mr/Ms. Storage. Why reinvent the bloody wheel? Especially when principles of Human Rights, Civic Duties, Business Acumen are universal. Or maybe you wanted India to have their own sepereate Human Rights Creed minus the freedom of Faith or Speech?

Practice Gandhian doctrine.
by Bishwa NathSingh on Apr 13, 2008 04:39 PM  Permalink

We honor the sentiments expressed by Kelkar. Can't we practice Gandhian doctrine that holds well even today for whole of the universe? If we wish to see that peace & tranquility should prevail all through out the universe, we must follow Gandhian doctrine. What we notice today that there is a marked difference in people saying & doing .The most of politician of present era speak some thing & do just opposite as what they have said. But Gandhi Jie had set himself as a rare example of what he said, he practiced the same in his life .He preached truth & non-violence and practiced the same all throughout his life. Let us imbibe Gandhi Jie's teachings and practice his doctrine in our life if we wish to bring peace all throughout the universe!

Ram Kelkar is right
by rohit pathania on Apr 13, 2008 02:15 PM  Permalink

Mr. Kelkar has managed to hit the nail on its forehead precisely. What all of us require in the present scenario is actually to rise beyond the case-based differences and work for providing equal education opportunities to all. and yes, not to fall for the tricks of the politicians who gain at the expense of dividing this country.

About America ..
by JaiHanumaan on Apr 13, 2008 01:12 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

With All due respect, west is a very stifled society, under the iron hand of law and corporate power(tyrannies). Democracy is a sham in America. People in US debates take very calculated positions with fear of jeopardizing their economic control over people. Its a very artificial controlled society.

It is not taught even in american universities that america is a democracy. It is america who can learn from indian socialist(still) democracy to loosen up a bit and have some real democracy.

Indians have become more materialistic since 1991 when rajiv gandhi was killed and narasimha
rao government took the credit for starting economic reforms.

Movements in indian thought are coming from southern india, because they have embraced the western/american style capitalism and there is literally no challenge to them, they are running away with the cake.

I pray to the almighty that a current to counter this current be born in northern hindu india setup, to quiten the forces unleashed from southern eliet establishments and their american freinds.

North is loosing out with this deluge of capital from foreign lands from secular elites forming alliances with west. They just have name of GOD
and their ancient faith to stick tightly to, on this modern day assault by secular, rich, psudos , english educated, of this economic whirlwind which is engulfing the simple people of faith of india.

Strangest part is NO ONE , is calling out this big elephant in the room(nation called india).

There is a defeaning quiteness of representation
of that other india which isnot moral and
representational participant in this phenomenon.

A nation has lost a part of its soul!
Even the minorities, even muslims have a wry
glee in there smile to have shaken hands with indian secular elites in siding with amricans,
because they know someone is loosing out(their
archenemy the religious right of india)!

Its politics and pretense of human nature at
its best!
