Reservation is justified, but only for a limited period
by joseph purathur on Apr 10, 2008 05:57 PM  Permalink

Indian system - social, political and economical, has been in such a shape for centuries that large sections of people are still living below the so-called BPL. What is the way out? How can these marginalised people be brought up, to a level where they can be competitive with the rest, on a level-playing field? Without such a condition, democracy cannot be effective. Powerful people will be able to exploit the weaker sections, politically, socially and economically. As a welfare State, Indian Government has a responsibility to make continuous and every efforts to bridge the gap, and bring the people at the bottom of the pyramid to a level-playing field. The SC is right in excluding the 'creamy layer'. It is not enough. The Governmment should evolve a plan to completely phase-out reservations in a definite time-frame. In no circumstances can we allow a situation where, each year, some political party or the other demand MORE and MORE castes and sub-castes to be brought under reservation. Are we supposed to go forward or BACKWARD? Joseph Purathur

Unless & untill they dont get any lesson from society, they will rule the society. They are in power because of us & imposing the unhealthy rules on us.

SC gives nod to 27 per cent quota for OBCs
by KM on Apr 10, 2008 05:55 PM  Permalink

Hi,we were in the opinion that Supremecourt considers evry situations, but ... even an IAS officer son/daugheter who hails from either OBC/BC/SC/ST gets a seat in top institutes without much tension, where as a poor OC cnadidate who fares well in the examinations has to feel tense whether he gets the seat he requires adn will he be able to pay the price for it, since for the SC/ST's etc govt is there topay them the fees but for the OC people it is his parents to pay the fees. Hats up........

Think of ur sons nd future generation
by Dangerous on Apr 10, 2008 05:54 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

So congress nd UPA finally succeded in dividing the Indian society even further...I m not against reservation but the criteria set for it...Reservation has been in existence for now more than 5 decades but it has failed miserably in its objective...Role of the state should be to provide equal opportunities to all its citizens but by incresing the share of reservation Indian govt has just widended the rift in society...I wonder what is the need to give reservation in post garduate education...By giving reservation to handful of candidates(remember we r billion plus country) will govt be able to achieve social euity...no ...it is pumping incompetent persons to take up the role of doctors nd managers who would further push the country backward...medicine is one of the few specialisation where incompetency can just snuff out life of people but these dirty politicians cannot understand the logic...the last hope of people was sc but even it has disappointed us...now sons of Mulayam ,Lau,Karunadhi would be eually eligible for all the reservation benefits...wake up people ...may be the share of reservation would shoot up to 100% someday nd ur children would say that our fathers were so incompetent nd timid that they didnt fight for our rights...remember it may not impact us immediately but our future generation would be affected

Voice of America
by Krishna on Apr 10, 2008 05:54 PM  Permalink

The Supreme Court is the voice of America. Henceforth, the lower classes will populate Indian institutions for free, and can fail or pass at will.. Upper castes ( creme de la creamy layer ) will pay their way through American univs. which are setting up their campuses in India. Cheer up.

ILLOGICAL decision
by tarun WALIA on Apr 10, 2008 05:53 PM  Permalink

The decision is a real bad taste.... In todays world such a decison is a real crap....

As in past, courts have pushed govts to act in logical way than political but this decision seems only politically influenced with no logic.

Courts should push govt to give support to poor people irrespetive of the caste with the facilities to study and not mere reservation.
