Monty was a friend of my dad's from his days in Assam, where my dad had interests in tea. I was priviledged to spend time with Monty at Dehra Dun, when he was commandant of the IMA, and fishing in the Ganges Gorge, and in Scotland, where he also loved to fish.
It is really a matter of pride that the persons like Major-Gen Palit are part of our country. Every citizen of India must follow the spirit instead of being busy in gossips.
I salute the real hero. Also, the article has much of useful info, rarely seen on rediff. we need to spread awareness on such positive notes happened in the past. It really encourages us to do some good/constructive work in our fields, in turn helps nation building.
My personal thanks Col Athale and Rediff for leting us know about genuine leaders and intellectuals like Maj-Gen Palit, more so when the whole media is shamelessly obsessed with skimpily clad women, worthless politicians, useless entertainers and false sporting heroes. Jaganniwas Iyer
So teh author does admit that victors write cooked up accounts of history....I guess I take it indian accounts of 1971 calling it a war of ondependence in which she had no role to play is a cooked up story too, and calling the 65 War as a draw is also a cooked up version, careful what you write my freind its not that easy.

Independence or not, 10 million refugees is definitely a strong enough reason for any country to intervene my dear friend! China had no such reason!

You are missing the finer point - He won it and till he was there on the scene, it was with India and when he was taken away, it feel - that shows importance of such a leader.
Dear Colonel Athale Thank you very much for bringing out this article on Maj General Palit. It is indeed heartening to know about our long term thinking among Military strategist(s). Thanks are also due to rediff because of them we could know of a soldier like MajGen Palit. I look forward to more such articles but one question that keeps bothering me is lack of interest(my perception) of joining military services in these age and times. I keep also reading about our officers/soldiers quitting frequently. I understand that people in general in this country still hold army(and not necessarily paramilitary forces) with due respect, but yes respect alone can not hold against numerous options except for those who choose defence services. When i hear on 140 Chinese intrusions in a year and our excuses of LAC not being defined,i am not sure what to make of it.We may not be a nation of agressors, but we must defend what is rightfully ours. I was reading reference to Gurodongma while Chinese intrusions were described and could relate to it as i have been there. Why do not we have military exercise on Himalayan borders, last one was perhaps 15 years ago !! Noone respects the weak.We still have a long way to go to our erstwhile glory as a Nation even though we may not want to project it consciously. Thanks & Jai Hind
