Climate change and farmer suicides are linked
by joe britto on Apr 08, 2008 03:28 PM  Permalink

Weather aberration in a country of continental size like India is a rule rather than an exception.
Inadequate rainfall results in lack of supply of water at the critical stages of plants and damage and excessive rainfall causes water logging and is detrimental to the normal growth of crops.

No single rainfall distribution pattern repeats itself year after year at the same place;
no single recommendation therefore works in all the years.

Even after considering all aspects and a crop project is established it is still uncertain if the set goal will be achieved.
It is necessary therefore for a farmer to become a local expert in course of time and more importantly to see that the environment is protected . Also before embarking on a particular crop pattern , it is essential that due weightage should be given in such a manner so as to reduce the risk factors.

Eggs should be distributed in different baskets and various options tried out. Always keeping in mind and expecting any climatic situation.
Priority should also be given to the items of crops that are essentials for daily life, then
a area could be reserved for growing economically remunerative crop.
There should be proper crop rotation taking into account the regional and the infrastructure
facilities available. This will ensure that even if there is excess or less precipitation
and sudden change in the climatic pattern, the economic condition of the grower will
not be greatly affected.

Why did they give GM seed producers a clean chit?
by Gautam Sinha on Apr 08, 2008 01:48 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Why did WHO ignore the other threat that farmers were being enticed with GM seeds which posed a greater danger to biodiversity making these farmers more dependant on the GM seed producers another form of exploitation? These farmers lived through earlier droughts also but in this capitalist era where money lenders and similiar expoliters are unchecked, farmers are comitting suicide. So lop sided statements like these should be avoided else they will get misinterpreted

good point ... seems corruption is everywhere ... btw, our union minister for cricket and agriculture can now claim that farmer suicide is inevitable as it is connected to forces of nature .. and he can focus more on cricket.

for those of you who do not understand why I say that GM seeds make farmers dependant here is the explanation in a nutshell. GM seeds have been authorized to be used ad hoc. GM seeds have been modified by inserting some genes into those seeds. however whenever GM seed is introduced into the system, it cross pollinates with other crops and these genes get introduced into the rest polluting those too. Now GM seed producing companies would run a trace on those seeds and see that they have the genes and claim it to be their property. Farmers using GM seeds cannot save seeds from crops for next year they have to buy it. This way bio diversity is killed and farmers become dependant on price manipulating companies. These prices then force the farmer to take more loans and thus the amount increases. The money lender does not give that much credit or if they do, it comes at a high rate. So you can see how suicides are excalated. It is not climate change but exploitation which causes the suicides.

Surely they are very much connected !
by Jonas DSouza on Apr 08, 2008 01:19 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

It may have been happening in Vidharba region since a few years now but this year it has happened right in the heart of Karnataka.

Heavy rains/flooding caused vast losses to various crops. Lucky if the farmers did not take loan for their crops and if they did, very soon there will be suicide cases from Karnataka too !

It is foolish to blame any govt. for farmer suicides - we must spread awareness and be prepared for such unfortunate situations. Especially by being prepared to preserve rainy water and use it during the days when there will be no rain.

Climatic changes and variations do not cause farmer sucide, they learn to live with this cycle for centuries. The cause is exploitation. even if these farmers had bumper crop such is the system that next year too farmers would have to take loans.

If it rains when the crop is about to be harvested and all the crop gets washed out in the floods, what would a farmer do especially when he expecting to pay off the loan after selling his yeilds ?

A farmer totally depends on the mansoons that are expected by June. Not in March/April ??

Farmers for generations are dealing with flood and monsoon and never ever the suicide rate was so high. Farmer suicide rate is even low in West Bengal inspite of having higher population density implying each farmer has smaller piece of land to tile on an average and therefore limited economic resource to feed the family. The farmer suicide epidemic in Maharashtra and Andhra is man made and aggravated by callous governments at state and union level.

I do not disagree with WHO that the factors are co related. However I am merely stating that it is not climate but the exploitation which is causing this. Climate is only an addition to the factor. Now I dont really know why WHO released this kind of study at this juncture and why PTI is publicizing it. Of course both are well within their rights to do so but it will be misinterpreted and misused by most parties. Also other factors which aid the cycle like forcing or seducing to use GM seeds etc are being downplayed as a result of this study

farmers must learn
by sriram kaushik on Apr 08, 2008 12:53 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

farmers must learn that education is the way out of abject poverty . schools and colleges will give you jobs. stop being farmers. stop tilling the land. get jobs in offices preferably abroad. get degrees thats the only way. or better be a dalal. see sarkozy talks to mittal not to you and me . thats the only way. climate change huh. see condoleeza is happy why el nino or katrina did not touch her. while blacks across africa are dying in starvation abd civil war . because her ancestors migrated to the land of the free(maybe force to) and she got herself qualified . thats why . so stop being silly and stop being farmers. all of us must be given jobs in the uno so that we can all get together and formulate policy on agriculture and climate change . what will we eat then , i dont know ,maybe some nanotechnology produced nano stuff we cant see but we cant eat . long live nanotechnology .

Farming is the most noble profession and if done right can generate huge wealth.

You are telling them to leave the best profession and take up jobs ? what a mindset.

Rather they should be taught to optimise their methods to increase profits and remove their dependency on loans.

the very fact that you people were convinced that the precocious stupidity of my statements were genuine and not saracam shows the state of youth today and their being hung up with education and all its trappings .
i beleive in what guru nanak said ,every house must be a dharamsala . i try to start guru ka langar type of free food in many communities though they have not taken off much ,but i still keep trying .india is a rich land and a wonderful place ,i have eaten the food of this land and it has let me live , maybe not with the amenities of the west ,but still i am content , and i believe i need top pay back to this land what it has given me and more and the best way to do this is to give free food from the wasting of food that is done in this remarkably fertile land of ours . any one interested in this kind of free food dream want to share it with me mail me sriramkaushik@rediffmail.com.
maybe just a dream today , but the little that i can payback i am happy with.

I and my spouse have a dream of owning approx. an acre of land away from the city where we will let grow all kind of trees and reserve some portion for growing vegetables/fruits and flowers.

This will be our retirement project for which we have already started saving.

How can we let such a huge cultivatable land fall fallow ? You must be joking ! India is one of major food producers and our exports earn us remarkable income.

As it is, many farmer families do not harvest regular crops now but have adopted fixed yield like seasonal fruits, coconut, arack nut and other tree based products because the younger generation did get educated and got into corporate line thus there are less people available to work in the fields now.

India cannot afford to buy all her food from other countries reversing the present system.

Can I advise you something? You must take an Yatch trip to come out of a monotonous middle class life. Your preaching was as practical.
