As an atheist and a rationalist, I condemn Karunanidhi and DMK. They are trying to hijack our atheist and rationalist beliefs in order to peddle their racial agenda. As atheists, we should be trying to reduce the amount of strife that comes from religion, and not to increase it. There were bad men in history like Stalin who destroyed churches and committed attrocities in the name of atheism, but he brought us a bad name. We should condemn such extremism done in the name of atheism. Karunanidhi is an admirer of Stalin, and so we should be suspicious of him. He is a racist in rationalist's clothing.

This is not something I read anywhere, but I feel confident about my guess. Karuna - Compassion and Nidhi - the basis. The 'basis of compassion' is the title used for Lord Rama due to his nature. Now we see why Karunanidhi's parents were probably more honourable than him. That said I dont think BJP deserves to benefit any way, they had a long-standing alliance with his party and Karunanidhi's beliefs have always been known to everybody - who else will name one's son as Stalin - probably the most cruel dictator of the past century.
Also if this is a larger question of principle, I dont know what the fight is about. It should certainly not be about Karunanidhi's belief. His beliefs are his own and he has a right for it (even though he should probably get this right while serving jail-time for other reasons :)). So the valid point to fight would be that Karunanidhi hurt the sentiments of lot of people. Not that he holds a particular personal belief. A pluralistic and secular Indian society shouldnt have a difference of opinion regarding this.

its not the question of existence of Ram. This is same for allah as well as jesus......religion is based on beliefs and you have to respect peoples beliefs. For that matter even during freedom struggle, Periyar (leader of a party called DK) said that....Karunanidhi is his ardent follower. I am not see that. in Bihar, we upper caste have strong hands. No body could talk against them. The upper caste will do the same in Tamilnadu. These Sudras in Tamilnadu are going against Brahmins. It's time to take them down
