What are the key Hindu scriptures?: The basic scriptures of Hinduism, which is collectively referred to as "Shastras", are essentially a collection of spiritual laws discovered by different saints and sages at different points in its long history. The Two types of sacred writings comprise the Hindu scriptures: "Shruti" (heard) and "Smriti" (memorized). They were passed on from generation to generation orally for centuries before they were written down mostly in the Sanskrit language. The major and most popular Hindu texts include the Bhagavad Gita, the Upanishads, and the epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata.

There are certain inaccuracies in the above. The "shruti" are the vedas that constitute the shabd pramana and are authorless (which is quite different from being anonymous) and thus constitute eternal truths. Even though some veda mantras have multiple rishis as drashtas, they are not to be considered as the authors nor do they claim so, many of whom have different authored texts that are part of smriti (e.g. works of vashishtha). Why the shruti should be accepted and other related questions are discussed in details by our purva-acharyas. The smriti are the authored texts and so come below the shruti in the "strength" of their validity i.e. smriti must be interpreted to conform with shruti or rejected if there is a conflict with shruti -- even the words of Lord are subject to this. Normally only the writings of Vyasadeva (since he has an avesha of the Lord) and Lord Himself are considered as valid smriti pramana (subject to being in consonance with shruti). The sadagamas among the smritis are the authentic puranas, the itihasas (Ramayana and Mahabharata) and some others like pancharatra. Traditional vedanta schools accept the prasthana traya viz. Veda, Bhagavad Gita and Brahma Sutra as the flawless pramanas.

If RAM did not exists!!!!!!!
by AMIT DANI on Sep 15, 2007 03:49 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

i have been reading all abt whether RAM did exists or not in the discussion board, and i have only one question to ask to all those who deny that there was someone called as RAM, then do u agree that the so called mythological books have been in existence for thousands of years now...

if RAM didnt exists and the books were only mythological, then the writers of these books must have been great scientist having all the modern techniques like Global Positioning System and imaging satellites to know what place is where in india and that there was a place called as Lanka and there was a bridge connecting the main land Bharat with the Lanka.

just think abt it.

i am a hindu and i have friends across faiths including muslims and christens and i am proud to be an bharatiya first. i think that is important.

What are the basic tenets of Hinduism?
: There is no %u201Cone Hinduism%u201D, and so it lacks any unified system of beliefs and ideas. Hinduism is a conglomerate of diverse beliefs and traditions, in which the prominent themes include:

* Dharma (ethics and duties)
* Samsara (rebirth)
* Karma (right action)
* Moksha (liberation from the cycle of Samsara)

It also believes in truth, honesty, non-violence, celibacy, cleanliness, contentment, prayers, austerity, perseverance, penance, and pious company.
