Wake up
by anirudh on Sep 12, 2007 03:49 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

There is no other formation in this world that is similar to the Sethu. Than how govt can prove that its natural and not man made. It's a rocky structure sandwitched between layers of sand, conclusively proving that it's a man-made structure.Or else how come rocks came above sand surface.
The sea level has increased in last 7000 years due to ice melting at poles, and thats why setu is under water. All people have some geological knowledge first. Congress and TN govt hell bent on pleasing some communities are fooling the public.

To those in favour of development

The project has no real value for India. Because, Indian goods can alwasy be transported to the east cost by road which is much faster and cheaper.

We should preseve our heritage. Whether you accept the history or not. It is still a unique place on earth.

Pride of India
by vijay kikkeri on Sep 12, 2007 03:36 PM  Permalink

Whenever any issue comes up which is related to hindu setiments, suddenly one group emerges chanting the development mantra. It is the same group which talks about human rights when our soldiers kill any militant.

India is not like US which does not have anything of its own in its past to be pride off. India has a rich heritage of over 5000 years and we need to do what ever possible to protect them.

I have seen how western countries protect their monuments and make money out of it. We should atleast show some interest in protecting our monuments so that our future generation feels proud of our country.

Preserve Ram Sethu(Adam's bridge)
by Abhay T on Sep 12, 2007 03:32 PM  Permalink

The most crucial question is whether the science is perfect? The fact is none of the scientific theories are 100% prooved and Geology is still far behind in giving any conclusive evidences. It is not possible to claim accuracy of thing that happened few decades back, forget about 1000 of years back. The science can merely study what is there at present and the current composition of substance there. It cannot prove any of the histoic events occurred in the past.

For whatever reason, the site has a very big heritage value. Historic references and Mythology (whether true or not) adds value to this heritage. So, I am in strong support of preserving it as it is really unique.

Many points to be considered...
by just reacting on Sep 12, 2007 03:26 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

All readers, please consider these points too...
1. The US wants to get this area declared as international waters "instead" of current historic status.
2. Thorium deposits are involved.
3. Even if its natural why destroy a natural wonder?
4. Whole of India mobilized to vote for Tajmahal as new 7 wonder - where are we now?
5. Why can't this place be made as tourist destination and the revenue earned serve as compensation for those extra 30 hours fuel cost?
6. WHY NOT start a geological study of the whole area / establish age of the object in question / establish the fact whether it is man-made or natural, then think of any project there. (What's the hurry?)
7. What was the haste for the Govt to inaugurate the project (the impending 123 deal?)
8. Forget party lines - the left should join issue here - US interests are involved!
9. This is NOT a religious issue - its a natural heritage!
10. What do the local people (of Rameshwaram in India and Mannar in Sri Lanka) think of this issue...
11. What about the environmental / climactic impact?
12. The current shipping minister (a party to the haste) was the environment minister few years back! Still the project was okayed!

Cont'd...
Just go have a look at Google Maps or if you have Google Earth installed better still. If the ship route IS SO IMPORTANT, why can't the project crusaders rebuild the Pamban bridge and the surroundings for a strategic passage? It would be totally within the control of India.

See this map - around the center is the Pamban bridge area. Hidden in cloud patches to the right is the Ram Setu (or Adam's bridge).

Dont harass the public
by sg sg on Sep 12, 2007 03:24 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

The opposition should learn to gain the public support by showing that they care. Not by putting them in inconvience. Show soem difference from the rest of the group. If they have a problem choose a spot that will not hinder traffic but still get the point across. And tell the public about it. They have a GE coming up and this can only be a start by changing their attitude. Try being courteous rather than selfish and arrogant. They woint become any less human or powerful if they do that.

Unfortunately my friend, the Congressmen understand only their own language, the language of swear words and violence. Look at the reaction of congressmen in Hyderabad after the collapse of a portion of flyover. They say "It fell because of heavy rains". Thats all!

There should be violence as only violence can make the violent people understand!
