Once that is done, in those tiny countries, we will again start fighting fighting to divide it again... Brother, no one in the world is same as the other. There will be a difference between anything and everything. It is up to the sensible people to accept our differences, and live in peace. If we do not have the sense, we will divide ourself again and again, restoring India back to the pre-British era, where we had hundreds of chota chota countries/kingdoms.
The Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project will allow ships to cut across the Palk Strait instead of having to go around Srilanka. This is expected to reduce travel time (by about 30 hours) for ships traveling from the Bay of Bengal to the Arabian Sea or vice versa. While I have great respect for the Indian epics, a secular government cannot afford to make decisions based on religious beliefs. Otherwise, the India cannot survive as a secular nation and the country will be torn apart by religious wars. Besides, Lord Rama had the bridge constructed to get to Lanka and back. I am sure he has no use for it now and wouldn't mind having a piece of it destroyed to speed up 21st century shipping. Congrats to the Archaeological Survey of India for coming out with a reasonable opinion.

I have read a handful of books that discuss various astronomical evidence (to crudely put it, various moon phases, eclipses, sighting of various stars and constellations in various parts of the sky etc as mentioned in these two epics). They place the Mahabharata happening and existence of some (historical) personality such as Krishna around 3100 BC and something of Ramayana kind around 5100/5000 BC. I believe the current government is turning vary sloppy in these matters and they forget they exist for the people and not the other way round!
