Great hero.Every time we need to think of these people to know the selfless sacrifices made by them and our society never gives them the real tribute-which can be achieved by trying to be selfless in our actions atleast.Rediff should bring out more stories of such people who sacrificed and are sacrificing for the country. In this era of ugly religious fundamentalism-it is very hard for a principled man to live. All the soldiers lives should be taught as lessons for school children. As an Indian all I can say is I am proud of Harshan and his parents.Living 100 years of selfish life is more burden to this earth.Social service and fundametals of doing something for the needy are lacking in the society.Hope this will create an example for all of us.

I was Fortunate

Hi Readeres,

I was fortunate to be a classmate of Col.vasanth Kumar ( Ya the same warrior recently laid his life fighting the terrorists in Kashmir)you know what? he was the Cadet Under Officer in NCC at MES college,Bangalore and i use to be a NCC sargent under him,He was determined he has taken his NCC so seriously that he went to RD parade and went all the way to Canada on youth exchange programme when we are worried about our scores he was the man who always dreamt of Army so the saying goes " To be a Brave is a Challenge and to die in the battle is a challenge to the Bravery"
I hope and trust the fellow Indians are not worship to the Khans,Darvids, etc instead they are proud to have a fellow Indian like Col Vasanth,Harshan.

Jab desh ne pukara asli mard chale maidan aur hamere jaise log dekthe rahe cricket aur fil.

Jai Vasanth,Jai Harshan,Jai Hind

Weak-kneed politicians
by stephen black on Sep 07, 2007 10:12 PM  Permalink

Thousand salutations to over people of the defence forces and to brave warriors like Harshan.
Terrorism is a product (rather than blaming pakistan and other neighbours)or rather thrives of weak-kneed politicians with infighting and no will to actually end the terrorist menance.
It can be wiped out with right people at the helm with a will to send a strong statement.
Currently our defence forces are fighting a battle with one hand tied back.
Acts of bravery by our defence personnal are hair-raising but it is sad to loose such valuable lives due to gutless acts by our politicians and other civil servants.
Wonder how many politicians send their children to defence forces, how much do they care about them other than shedding crocodile tears and awarding a couple of lakhs which is not their money anyways.
It time the dirty rotten scoundrels called politicians act with an iron will to put an end to terrorism and loss of these valuable lives.

My question is ...casualty in jawans in indian army is 100 times more than officers, still i never see them covered.
WHY?

Real Hero or beyond that
by subhash saxena on Sep 07, 2007 09:54 PM  Permalink

We are calling him a hero, I think calling him a Hero is his insult. He must be called a Warrior of the nation. The world hero itself low to stick to his name. Not only Capt. Harshan is beyond that word but also other soldiers who died for their country deserved to get the same honor.
Somebody rightly said that we only care our jokers (So called Hero ) like our Bollywood celebrities, by publishing their interests etc..

The whole nation must understand the sacrifice laid by our warriors and must come forward with the zeal and enthusiasm to serve the country.

Conversation of a Soldier and his Death
by Rabindra Mishra on Sep 07, 2007 09:42 PM  Permalink

Death: The life is not that worth. There are people who, bound by their supreme ideals, like you, died young unnoticed. Here, something that is mere irreverent to ones personal existence and self realization wins the heart and more sarcastically a larger space of public discussion. One may get fatigue counting the number of times it has happened to us.

Soldier: Even if you force me to belief that life is not that worth to be sacrificed for this ungrateful nation, yet I, given a chance, would prefer to sacrifice the only mortal possession I have with me considering the utter ignorance of my countrymen, who even does not know where they would lead to. As I consider the ignorance is as good as death, I pay homage to my ignored countrymen before they could do it to my mortal remains. Yet they fail to realize that I am still alive; alive in the spirit of few other maniacs who love this piece of land on the globe called the nation, irrespective of its explicit identity.

Death: I failed not to get your logic but to proof that being mortal is universal. Yet, let me do my duty.

Soldier: Sure. I did mine. You do yours. Our last touch is relevant to my immortality.
