Our leftists have the best of both worlds. They will never loose. Heads I win, tails you lose!
They know they have a solid vote bank. No matter what, they will always have a voice. As they have no onus to solve any problems, they can oppose according to what makes a drama to appeal to their illiterate voters.
China has scored big in soft power, with their leaders able to sell their interests and get it all from all and sundry. They know they have to deliver results, detailing positive achievements every five years. Our leftists know they are hardly accountable, can close all industries in their strongholds, WB & Kerala, still consider that as an achievement of epic proportions in the proletariats struggles. Chinese are very practical, with little ideology having paid a big price in the Long March & Cultural revoltion. They want to makeup for lost time, with superstructures, that stun even the advanced countries.
Our leftists cannot seem to get of their shit holes and instead of taking in the positives from China & Vietnam, engage in perpetrating misery all around.
For a change, it is time they got into the act to lend a positive hand in solving our myriad problems than in engaging in roadblocks that will perpetuate the misery for future generations. Any deal is give & take and it is for us to convert it to our advantage. Otherwise we will be isolated, the biggest country, not even worth a Permanent Membership of the UN Security Council.
India has got so many things going on and India re-iterated that even if the offer comes from super power if it doesn't benefit us we can stand our ground. The nuclear deal is not a communist/left issue. It is India's sovereign right to pursue nuclear weapons and carry out research in regards to that. The nuclear deal will cut short that privilege and India is right in not getting into this deal. Indian can stand on its own for its energy needs. India has the 2nd largest deposits of Thorium.

There is no clause in the 123 agreement which says that India can not do research or should not use thorium? Where did Mr.Shadow get such funny news that this deal will stop India from research and development? As on date, there is no power reactors where you can use thorium for power generation. Twi day back an article appeared on rediff in which Dr.Kalam expressed hope that we will develop a thorium based power reactor in 5 to 7 years time.

Well our research is all visible everywhere. Take LCA (Tejas), or air to air trishul missile or cryogenic engines that we could never develop until Russia loaned us one to figure out how it works. So regardless of whether the deal was beneficial to India or not, we dont have research infrastructure to support any genuine product development.

Add to that list Arjun the MBT. After decades of delay it still can't meet army specs. So India imports T-90 tanks from Russia. So much DRDO product development! And many years delayed is Tejas now! Just read today, current operational date is 2013 for Tejas, and this was supposed to have been available in mid-1980s!
Thorium based FBR reactor is far more complicated to develop in a commercial scale. So good luck on that if it gets done by 2050! Until then the option is between undrinkable water or unbreathable air due to pollution from coal-fired power plants (let alone global pressure to curb green house gas emission), or the economy coming to halt due to lack of power (tell me abt other alternative source when they reach scalability to power a nation of billion plus population or India is ready to create hydro power projects like Three gorges in China which caused huge environmental and humanitarian disasters).

if you are in India name one month in the whole of last year when you did not experience a power cut.. And why should Thorium research stop India from obtaining more nuclear reactors for power generation? Research does not have fixed timeline so should indians wait in the dark till Thorium research is completed. Let all the research for alternate energy be explored but this deal could solve our power shortage issue within say 8 - 10 years. By the way nuclear reactors are not permenant solution as they are an inherent risk. So, not only India but the world by and large should try to obtain renewable alternate source of energy

do you know how much time and effort that is needed for developing thorium based reactors? do you know the current state of Indian n-reactor research? do some search before you say we will use bla bla bla

Sharma,
In fact, no country has progressed by being ideologues, all have realised rule of law & rewards for hard work are necessary for any progress. There are now increasing number of individual multi millionaires in China and as long as it is through hard work, nobody bothers. The history of Cultural Revolution is too stark for them to think otherwise. They know, which side of the bread is butter, having seen the successes of Taiwan, Hongkong & Singapore, who have made great progress out of barren miniscule lands compared to China's size & natural riches.

Let us start a rightwing Nationalistic TV which highlightes such ideas over and over. It should include some good films Interviews, Historical Programs, Game-shows/Quiz contests. I have a lot more ideas.
a very good article written by mr anil kumar. our prayers are for his speedy recovery. i sometime wonder that any one took india seriously ever . what difference it makes to leftists or corrupt politicians their coffers are full of ill gotten money and they will have electricity around the clock . to hell with indians their votes are cheap plenty of booze and muscle power will win the day
Most are preoccupied with nuclear energy. Our main source of energy is the Middle East. We are trying to get gas from Iran at the cost of our self respect and putting our necks on the line. Iran has hardly responded, while the pipeline is planned through Pakistan, of all countries, ie right through Al Queada infested area. We are that desperate. Our politicians are debating the nuclear fiasco, without any regard to solving our overall energy problem.
Let us move forward. Fair enough, we cannot agree on the terms. Let the leftists put forth a time bound road map, to attain energy security.
China, with much less outside dependency has shown great haste in this regard. The difference is they do not believe in the blame game. They know the buck stops with them. Our petty politicians have always a scapegoat, their opponents. We may even be faced with darkness at noon and they will point fingers at each other for the mess, with eyes on getting elected perpetually. They benefit, whether they are in power or in opposition. Our voices does not matter, as none of us vote, though I have, choices from equally bad.
They know which side of the bread is butter. Let us all have a long and hard look at the mirror, before blaming our state of affairs. Unless, we have a system of leadership renewal like in China, we will be ruled by leaders from the past, with agenda of endless blame games.
The poor have to get succour from the reel world only, with stark reality.
Since 123 will solve India's energy problem for ever, it is worth dclaring emergency and suppress the communists. BJP leadership is solidly behind it and come on board. they started the process after all. One 123 is operational, India can meet all of its need from nuclear power stations that we can ask US companies to build. We can convert all our vehicles to electric and solve our pollution problem in the process.

Please ask dear old doctor Singh to develop a spine for a change and stand up to the Left "ally" bullies. He has only to visit a Gurdwara and learn about Guru Govind Singhji and his self-sacrifice to stand up for his belief.

I don't think either the govt or any of deal's supporters claimed that nuclear power would take care of all of India's energy needs (although 77 percent of energy production in France is nuclear energy). However given the issues of pollution and global warming from coal-fired power plants, land acquisition etc problem with hydel power, non-scalability of other alternate power sources and lack of good quality coal in India, nuclear power could be major source after thermal power.
In addition, this deal breaks the dual-use technology denial regime that India is subjected to under NPT, allows greater investment flows, infusion of new technology and a back-door entry to nuclear power club so far limited to P5 countries.
Times of India opinion page article by Sumit Gangulay, professor of political science at Indiana University, Bloomington.
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Opinion/LEADER_ARTICLE_Save_The_Nuclear_Deal/articleshow/2490987.cms "...Despite the fecklessness of Congress's left-wing allies, the craven opportunism of BJP and the reflexive hostility of the non-proliferation lobby in the US, it is still possible, nay desirable, to salvage this deal. The sheer significance of the agreement calls for a final, all-out effort on the part of the ruling regime. Repeated rounds of consultations with the Left parties will not yield any other results than the ones that have been obtained. They are merely playing for time while ensuring that the deal does not move forward. Instead, once again, Manmohan Singh needs to display a degree of verve and steadfastness. Beyond helping assuage India's acute energy shortfalls, the agreement holds the promise of much-needed investment flows, infusions of new technology (long barred thanks to existing American legislation) and a dramatic contribution to mutual trust, a commodity that has been severely attenuated in the last few days."

indian politicians get their information through chamchas. they can not read and understand english papersmy dear you seem to living in an other planet where only wise live
This N-deal was pretty useless in all aspects. It was bound to constrain india's N-bombs, give the US leverage over India, provide power at 3 times the cost and leave India at the mercy of US wishes. The worst part was the perpetual safeguards which means that once the deal is signed India's listed civilian reactors can never be used for bombs. These safeguards would exist even if the US scrapped the deal and stopped supplying fuel. It is unfortunate that backward thinking commies were the only ones to oppose this deal. Every patriotic Indian who understands english should have read the text and voiced his/her opinion against this deal.

You are wrong, IAEA safeguards stand even after the expiration of the deal till a time when the N-fuel is no longer suitable for commercial use.

You know how much gasoline cost in US or Singapore or any country which have a open petroleum policy? They pay much less than we Indians in India. Similarly the fear that private generation and distribution of power would cost us more is just a myth. Today most of the power generated are lost due to inefficiency of transmission and theft. Let power be generated and distributed by private players and if Govt want let it pay the power bills of the poor which should still be less than the losses incurred by our electricity boards
