This N-deal was pretty useless in all aspects. It was bound to constrain india's N-bombs, give the US leverage over India, provide power at 3 times the cost and leave India at the mercy of US wishes. The worst part was the perpetual safeguards which means that once the deal is signed India's listed civilian reactors can never be used for bombs. These safeguards would exist even if the US scrapped the deal and stopped supplying fuel. It is unfortunate that backward thinking commies were the only ones to oppose this deal. Every patriotic Indian who understands english should have read the text and voiced his/her opinion against this deal.
Who in this country has a vision for making startegic policy decisions, NO ONE. Possibly Rajiv Gandhi and Atal Bihari were only two persons with long term strategic vision. Rajiv was defeated by the Congress sycophants and Atalji was defeated by the stupidity of his party members.
This country needs a visionary who can decide on the long term strategy not only for energy but for defence and everything else.
The political fiasco happening was real bad to see but then even the NRI's(precisely those in America) should stop acting like the N-Deal is some kinda best thing happening to India. Fact that these guys settled abroad indicates that they really dont think much about India.

Being an NRI does not make you less Indian. Remaining in India does not automatically make one a patriot either. Look at the number of corrupt, power hungry, treacherous people that fill the corridors of power in India. Then turn back and look at the NRI's who are trying to bring in new technology, contribute to relief after earthquakes and tsunamis, lobby for India in other countries, bring in investment and overall fight for a better India. The famous Raj Kapoor song from Shree 420 "mera joota hai japani" is still true for the Indian. Its the heart that matters.
The author says "Given the stakes, China was expected to pull out all the stops to sabotage the N-treaty."
Dont't you'll think that is what exactly has happened. Left is still China's stooge. if we want our country to prosper we should ban Commies. Because communism thrives on poverty and they will make sure that people are in poverty to thrive. If they meant business WB would have been a successful state. But look at WB now. We find people in bus fighting for 10 paisa with the conductor. Such is the state of affair. And Congress will do anything to cling to power. They would even sell their mothers to cling to power. The prophetic statement by Periyar that 'August 15th 1947 is a black day in Indian democracy, it's just a transfer of power from one trader to another' is very much true in current conditions
thks mr anil kumar for your excellent article but i feel it fails to touch many important issues.
1.there are no permanent friends or enemies in international relationships. americans are comfortable only in dealing with dictators and certainly will not be with a motley crowd of politicians going under the garb of democracy. that is the reason they always supported pakistan, shah of iran and philipines and they never encourged democracy in any country.
2.americans are known to be very untrustworthy and they go back on their agreements at thir own whim. they may wink at the hyde act if it suits them but what is the guarantee they will not use it to blackmail/ditch us when our use for them is over. tarapore nuclear deal is there as a red signal for their treachery
3.india will become the dumping ground for their out-of-date nuclear reactor tecnologies and their multinational cos will kill our r&d programs and growth of independent scientific talent and research. they will kill our research in the field of thorium based FBTs.
4.even after the deal, the nuclear energy will form only 7 -10% of total requirement. is it worth selling our honour and freedom for this minor percentage.
5. nuclear energy is highly capital intensive and involve long gestation period. imagine what will be cost of unit of electricity and can you tell me whether majority of indians can afford that high a price.

6. this deal will enrich the coffers of big multinationals and certainly big industrial giants like reliance etc. will it really benefit the majority of indians and help reduce the dsparity between the rich and the poor. MOST CERTAINLY NOT BY ANY STRETCH OF IMAGINATION. it will only help ambanis and the like to add few more billions to their kitty and corrupt politicians will havw field day but hapless farmers will continue to commit suicide in droves.

7. finally india being such a weak/spineless country do u think it will effectively deal with the rise in terrorism due to the deal and ensure the safety of its citizens?? see america had not seen any repeat of 9/11 since they are not going to take lying low or philosophically like our indian politicians do. it will become a boring ritual after every bomb attack which will only increase to hear our politicians' bravados. except that those who died due to these attacks will not be there to hear it. but our corrupt politicians' security will be increased more at the cost of already suffering tax payers.
