Two steps back, - By dithering, the Congress has given its rivals a useful handle
by Tathagata Mukherjee on Oct 16, 2007 09:45 AM  Permalink

Fabulous analysis from Mahesh Rangarajan, one of India's finest political Commentetor.

By first raising the stakes and then backing off, the Congress leadership has added to the problems on its plate. The consequences will unfold over the rest of its term in office. But it has given its opponents a key campaign point. A party that rallies round the leader will now be hard put to firm up her credentials.

Fairytale end??!! Congress will consider it a political suicide!
by Varatharajan S on Oct 16, 2007 09:43 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

The suggestion sounds wonderful on paper - Two principal parties in the country joining hands in the interest of the country! But, impossible. Congress lately has made "communalism" (read Anti-BJP) the primary election issue (as well as it's survival strategy) and has joined hands with any party that could be labelled "secular". It would be political suicide for them to take BJP's help even if it were to offer it and alienate the "secular" parties. Anyway, with the two of them being the principal parties vying for the centre, it is pretty much impossible for them to join together. Also, it is too much to expect the current crop of politicians to put national interest ahead of their party's interest.

True. Cong-BJP arrangement is the need of the hour. But let the Congress who have given so much of boost to the communists take the initiative in approaching the BJP with some workable formula. Or let them continue with the people who in their own opinion are working against the interest of our country. Let us face the reality of China-Pak-Iran-Bangla axis with some bold initiatives.

Your conclusions are straightforward based on what we know of our politicians. But we are in a deep deep hole and are praying for someone to save us. Will the BJP/RSS bail us out or again cry out SONIA MAINO. My intuition tells me that you will be proven right but let me live in fools paradise for a few days and hope for the idiots on both sides to come together.

Till the time of Vajpayee, India's foreign policy was broadly supported by all parties.
by Tathagata Mukherjee on Oct 16, 2007 09:37 AM  Permalink

Till the time of Vajpayee, India's foreign policy was broadly supported by all parties.

Under Sonia's leadership, Congress has single handedly destroyed this approach which was in place from the time of Nehru to Vajpayee.

UPA has created more political divide in India, including talk of Muslim reservation.

Its people like Lord Meghnad Desai who spoke long time ago abt a national Government of Cong and BJP.

BUT CONGRESS WHICH IS HELL BENT ON DIVIDING THE COUNTRY WILL NEVER WORK WITH BJP.

BECAUSE CONGRESS WILL LOOSE MUSLIM VOTE.

On the contrary, it is Congress which has to eat humble pie and ask BJP to support them. Right now it is Congress which is the one putting its poll prospects ahead of its so-called agenda.

Stupid Arguments
by Dipak Bose on Oct 16, 2007 07:28 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Uday Vaskar is a propagandist, he has inadequate knowledge and he is twisting the facts.
Before 1974 India has only two very old type Nuclear power plants ( from USA and Canada)with all strings attached to these. India has no heavy water plant, reprocessing plant, enrichment plants, Fast Breeder Reactors, but only a small research reactor buitlt with the help of USSR where the materials for nuclear blast of 1974 came from. Is that sovreignty where India was totally dependent on the whims of USA-Canada.
After 1974 with the help of USSR ( not France) India became self sufficient and now USA is coming in to destroy India's self sufficiency and put India back to the days of 1974: i.e India will get those very old Tarapur type reactor but needs to give up Nuclear weapons ( that is the reason El-Badairi from IAEA came to India). In future India will not be allowed to have reproccessing plants or enrichment plants( this is the dispute on Iran now as Russia supplied Iran one enrichment plant, which USA wants Iran to close down).
Thus by signing the Indo-US Deal India will have to sign away its sovreignty.
Sonia-MamMohan are CIA agents, if BJP joins it, that would prove Vajpayee-Advani are also CIA agents, which Jaswant Singh is surely is.
By the way CHINA supports this deal and encouraging India to sign because then both Pakistan and China armed with nuclear weapons would blackmail India.

I dont think anyone you mentioned is a CIA agent. We have to have confidence in ourselves to be able to do business with americans, chinese, russians and europeans in a smart way. We have to strike deals and win friends. We cannot live in our past fears. Otherwise we will have failed our future generations the opportunity to a prosperous India. Only those nations integrated with the global community will survive. Those like chavez, castro and ahmedinejad can only survive if they have oil money backing them. We know the stupidity of America bashing. Let us do business with them but not let them be our masters. I think that is what the Nuclear deal is about. A fearful mind will fail where a brave one will succeed.

The Collapsed Nuclear Deal
by Khandu Patel on Oct 16, 2007 06:15 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

The nuclear deal has gone the same way as all the initiatives of the Sonia Government, which have collapsed in the face of the slightest resistance from their CPA partners.

The agreement is one success that the President could have claimed as his historic achievement but then he could not have known how feeble the Government led by Singh. Singh had put his life of the Government on the line only to be contradicted by Gandhi. We will know very shortly if Singh is the puppet that we always thought he was.

The greatest defect for the agreement is the weak Singh administration. I am not overjoyed with the agreement but it would take a stronger administration to overcome its defects. The best thing for the country would be for Singh to fall on his sword, and show that he is a man.

When Japans Shinzo Abe resigned, I read his outgoing speech with admiration. Japanese have great honor. Though India's friend Shinzo Abe did not commit the ceremonial "hara-kiri" to redeem his honor, he resigned that earned him great respect. Unfortunately Manmohan is exactly where Shinzo Abe was two months ago.

By backtracking or showing helplessness to implement the Indo-U.S.nuclear deal as perthe wishes of the commies the respect for the post of P.M.& the self-respect of Dr.M.M.Singh are shamefully at stake. Most of all the image & the failure to implement the deal by INDIA will have negative repurcussions internationally & may isolate INDIA from globalisation in the future which is detrimental to the interests of people of India.Commies are paid servants of China as u all know & they are opportunists to share power without any accountability. The Italian cicilian clan is trying her best to divide this country on cast, creed, religion & even by gender basis. Her final goal is to make her Son or daughter as P.M.( which she could not achieve because of her gori chamdi & foreign origin).Last but not the least, if at all Dr. M.M.Singh left with some self-respect & courage( Eventhough he is an Economist he belongs to warrior community of India)he should resign immediately on moral grounds to counter the blackmail from commies to show to everybody nationally & internationally that the committment & interest of India are greater than P.M.'s post & dirty political equations.

I agree, we can all shout, cry, chat, blog or just sit in shock, but nothing will change. We have no power. While people like Karat and Karunanidhi rule our destiny. They have all mastered the art of fixing elections so they will still be in power when my grandson is ready to vote. (Guys, actually Karunanidhi is immortal, if you did not realize it). When I open my next bottle of scotch (now owned by a desi thanks to globalization), I will raise a toast to all ye fellow chatters who are as powerless as me.
