Pakistan Military fools international community
by apjunkmail on Nov 05, 2007 09:44 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Musharraf along with pak military have turned it into an art on how to fool the international Community into giving billions and Keeping him and the military in power. All complete with well choreographed acts like assassination attempts, blasts, raids into waziristan, nukes in danger, emergency, Osama sacks islamabad etc.. etc.. When the fact remains Taliban till today is a wholly owned subsidiary of pakistan ISI with the objective to control Afghanistan and be the reason for west to pay billions of $$ in rent/aid to Pakistan Army which includes Talibans salary supplemented by drug trade.

Srinivasan is forgetting about the positives of the Indian democracy
by Amar Dave on Nov 05, 2007 09:32 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Yes, I agree that the quality of Indian democracy may not be of the highest caliber. But atleast, we have gotten some of the basic tenants of democracy correct. And today, we are reaping benifits of this democracy. 1) Free press. Al the very least, people who screw up can be called out upon screwing up. For e.g. Jessica Lal's case in a judiciary mishap or the Tehelka sting operation finding corrupt MPs, 10 of whom got fired a couple of years ago. 2) Military firmly under civilian control. This is important because if military is overpowering the civilian life, it is going to restrict, among other things, freedom of thought and this will kill innovation and thus development in the country. This is one of the reasons the border regions wrecked with terrorism have low development, because military is involved. 3) Freedom of investment. Or I should rephrase this, freedom to make money. Money or better life for oneself and one's kin is a powerful biological motive that drives us humans. This incentive was stifled until 1991 but after opening up the economy, numerous financial opportunities opened up and this has helped the country tremendously.
Thus while bashing the malperforming aspects of the Indian democracy, Srinivasan should give credit where it is due.

Inefficiency of a country is due to inefficiency and poor attitude of its people. Thus while rajeev sreenivasan truly points out hard facts about ineffectiveness of indian democracy,it makes more sense to accept that people have voted and allowed these politicians to come to power and remain so.The same thing applies to pakistan where its people are responsible for allowing dictatorship to continue-lack of discipline and tolerance in society is the fundamental reason for democracy not to sustain in Pakistan. While in India there is tolerance but poor discipline and execution of rule of law.Media alone is pointing fingers at flaws but some of the media personnel are so incompetent that they do not have any idea of priorites.

FREE PRESS! What a hearty laugh! Twisted Press is a better description. They serve the interests of only those who pay them directly or indirectly. They care little about truth or ethics leave alone partiality.

PHONEY MUSHARRAF
by damodaran mohan on Nov 05, 2007 07:43 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

i wonder if only rajiv sreenivasan were a pakistani whether he would have felt the way he he is feeling about democracy, autocracy and above all about Musharraf. cynicism for
politicians and the polity will be there always because nothing is perfect in this world. the greatest power on earth is not the economic, fiscal or military power one enjoys but the power of an individual to control lives of other people . but howsoever imperfect a democracy be , autocracy is necessarily is a primitive statecraft sure to stunt the realisation of the true spirit of the individuals of any community. more and more the imperfectness creeps in a democracy more the chances of it degenerating into an autocracy which we have been witnessing in Pakistan. if the politicians and the systems in India also degenerate to such levels then even this country can lapse into such an anarchy . but instead of cynicism probity in public life by each one of us form the foundation for sound democracy. perhaps some of our earliest leaders laid such a foundation to whom we should be indented to. your appreciation of Musharraf is misplaced because he is primarily a phoney character who has used his military position and religious environment there to usurp power and cannot be trusted by anybody and has no place in a democratic society.

The danger for india has already passed when the people voted BJP out of power. It was during BJp period that india became a laughing stock with corrupt fanatic leaders making all kinds of promises to the people and the world and not keeping it up.

Musharraf better than Indian politicians
by on Nov 05, 2007 07:02 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

On any day, the governance in Pakistan is better than the governance in India. Our crooked politicians are merely robbing the nation. Congress is the worst crook in the entire world.

Musharraf is better than all our horrible Indian politicians. Right or wrong, he is trying to do at least something for his country, not for his personal gains.

Our dirty politicians are absolutely corrupt and selfish.

Mr. Bhaskar, please do tell us what great things have the so called Pseudo-Secular parties(they call themselves Secular, which is a shame)like congress, RJD, JD-S, SP, BSP acheived in the last few years they have been in power? Agreed that BJP were a bunch of thugs and goons seeing everything in the light of Hindutva. But it is them who gave a meaning to Nationalism. You surely dont expect the country to be ruled by maniacs who call themselves 'Communists' do you? See what has happened to West Bengal in all these years of the Communist rule. They have chopped away the idea of democracy, made the industries rot with non-sense policies(strikes, hartals).
