This is not business, the figs., seem Lucrative and slowly it will result i nExploitation of Poor Women..........This was the only thing left in Women to be exploited... And a Woman indulging in such Cheap Act like Nayana Patel is Shameful....But for the money would Nayana do this??......Pregnancy is Not a Joke...Maybe a greedy corocodile like Naayana would lend her body for anything....To get money!!..Already poor people are exploited in developing countries like ours, and now she is all set to degrade Feminity.....Surrogate motherhood could be a help onli in extreme cases and should not be commercialsied like this....

thats right now a day doctor r like business man they r not doing there practise to help, but only for money, this is a last stage where doctor goes try to stop surrogate and pramote adoption
Every medical facility is like both sides of a coin.. People can use it either way.. Surrogacy is the same.
There are many women who cannot bear children.. particularly affter Cancer treatments. but, they can concieve with the eggs taken and frozen prior to cancer treatmetn. For such women, surrogate motherhood is a boon.
If brokers and agents are going to misuse,(like how kidney transplant is done at some places).., then doctors cant do anything.
It is for the government to bring stringent measures to monitor it so that middlemen dont come here.
RE:Surrogacy is good for some women; but beware of middlemen.

see who is middle man? doctor itself play arole of middleman,so wht can both party do?
After reading entire article, it may be construed that this so called 'help' is going to be another drastic type of exploitation of poor. It may be simply asked whether the westerners can't find surrogate mothers among themselves? There are several poor people or lower middle class people there. Are they trying this help programme there? Many number of ethical, religious, emotional and social problems are involved in this. It is not simply a woman helping a woman. As it is it will help the Doctors and middlemen. mainly as the woman helping another woman will get only paltry sum. The entire proposal should be put to a wider debate including all religious heads, social activists, Women organizations in India rather as also rural women folk.

Shocking...a womb for $6000! I am sure the womb renters earn more than that in a month in US. Shame on you Dr. Patel! Pregnancy is not easy. It is risky and involves immense suffering. You, as a woman should know that and you should at least have paid the woman a higher percentage of the $15000 that you charge. Also, what about the the trauma that the women undergo after handing over the baby to the womb-renters?Has anyone done any research on the long-terms effects of this on the mental health of these poor, helpless women? To me, Dr. Patel is not very different from kidney racketeers. How did this woman get on Oprah? Has the world come to this?
Fantastic deed. Loved the 'woman helping woman' statement. I am also so proud of all the positive comments for this article by readers. Normally comments for many articles are by cynics, but this time even the cynics are supportive. As a woman, I would like to thank all you good people, and God bless Dr. Patel and her endeavours
If educated people can sell their education /knowledge and earn huge bucks then what's wrong in poor, illiterate or semi-literate women selling their wombs for little better livings for their families. In fact I don't find any thing morally wrong even in poor women selling their body for sex. It is better than living in perpetual hunger in shabby hutments. Giving lecture about morality, exploitation etc sitting in AC room is very easy. We well off people will never comprehend sufferings and compulsions of these poor people. As in IT & BPO industries here also India has cost advantage and therefore it is just another form of outsourcing by western people. But be careful Pakis or Bangladeshis may in future catch up with us when their education & technology level improve a bit bcoz human beings are even more cheap in those countries. See, in IT & BPO field China & Philipines are closing the gaps with India. Thailand is doing extremely good in SPO (Sex Process Outsourcing). These are necessary evils and will / should continue till majority people of our country remains poor.

BTW, in Indian mythology Balaram (elder brother of Lord Krishna) was shifted as foetus from his mother Devaki's womb to the womb of Rohini.
I feel dr Patel should take help of married females and not from unmarried one.In order help a couple their is no need to go against society norm of inpregnating unmarried female for whatever reasons.

I cannot really comment on the topic on the whole as I have mixed feelings about it. I just wanted to comment on this particular post.
We are talking about India. The social stigma would be nearly the same for both. It would be worse for the unmarried woman but for the married woman it would be horrible as people will not be able to understand as to why she had to rent out her womb. A lot of stuff like cant her husband provide for the family, cant she work as a housemaid somewhere if they are that poor and needy would be brought up. As is mentioned in the article, the woman's name is changed and their relatives dont know about it. She probably just said that she has a job in another city for a period of one year or something like that. Not possible for a married woman to do so. Even if her husband is on it for the money, she has to explain it to her inlaws and the whole world. she cant take off for a period of one year.
On a second note, the compensation is really little. I guess as the West costs a lot, people of poorer sections of society in countries like ours are doing this as even that little bit of money means a lot to them while it's peanuts to a couple who really want to have a child.

Once you say all hindu mythologis then you tell us that surrogate mothers are mentioned in ancient folk tales,So make up your mind Indian folk tales are false or history, you cannot have the cake and eat it too. One such surrogate mother is Rohini mother of Balaram, where embroy of devaki and vasudev was transfered in rohini's womb.

I said Indian folk tales ... where did you see any mention of hindu mythology.
You can't write even a correct sentence and find fault with my post ... LOL
but i call it exploitation of poor women in 3rd country plus this help is not recognised or apperciated by westerns as GENUNINE help they infact make fun of it and mark it as sign of pure downtrodden poverty in india out of which women r ready to sell themselves in anyway they can . they pass cruel swearing marks on india n indian women becoz of this so called HELP

You can not deny there is lot of poverty in rural India and no justice for poor women. If they are doing this out of desperation then we have to change the system from within. People criticisizing it or not does not matter.

you are right! .... these dharam-ke-thekedars will yell "hindusim khatre mein hai" ... and "this is unethical" when someone wants to help some poor in return of somthing - be it surrogate motherhood or conversion of religion ... but will never come to help them ... it's like saying I won't help you and if you take anyone's help I'll oppose it on moral grounds
Begging is totally acceptable .... being raped by sants and shankaracharya is ok too ... but not being a surrogate mother.
This is nuts. I don't want to comment on whether lending womb is good or bad, but see the figures that are given in the article.....
Doctor charges 1lakh 15,000 USD and what the surrogate mother gets is 2.5 lakhs 600USD (at the most)in the whole period some facilities. Leftover 10 lakhs go to the doctor!!! Hey she actually is not charging 1 lakh, but about 11 lakhs.
The Author has written "There's a fnancial side of it" and gave it a very very sweet and rosy picture, whereas there's a BIG MONEY involved. End of all this, the surrogate mother gets peanuts despite taking ALL the pains (after insemination doc's work is just like any other gynaecologist)and the doctor flying away with most of the money.
Middle men will soon get involved in the BUSINESS and make the things worse (forcing some helpless women and taking advantage).
This is more a social issue than medical and proper laws must be made more stringent around this procedure helping the surrogate women.
